  • The shutter-cocking rack in a Retina IIc from my collection failed when I attempted to cock the shutter. Fortunately, I recognised the symptoms immediately and stopped before any more damage was done.
    Consumables used servicing camera bodies:
I use naphtha (cigarette lighter fluid) for cleaning metal parts. CRC Heavy Duty Lectra Clean for dried grease that the naphtha won’t dissolve. A generic wax and grease remover to soak mechanical parts prior to cleaning in an ultrasonic cleaner. Glass cleaned with normal domestic glass cleaner.
Parts are lubricated with Inox MX6 (a synthetic grease), Rocol Dry Molybdenum paste, MicroLubrol Helimax XP helicoid grease, graphite powder, or graphite grease as needed.
Leatherettes are glued back with Ados F2 adhesive.
Consumables used servicing shutter and lens assemblies:
Naphtha (cigarette lighter fluid), or occasionally CRC Heavy Duty Lectra Clean. Lenses cleaned with normal domestic glass cleaner.
Parts are lubricated Rocol Dry Molybdenum paste, MicroLubrol Helimax XP helicoid grease, graphite powder, or graphite grease as needed.

That was such an informative demonstration of how to fix a cocking rack. My example is a lot worse but worth a try. 🤞
    Thank you Chris 👍
P.S. if only someone made tungsten carbide Cocking racks.

You straightened the cocking rack teeth in my Retina Ib over a decade ago, and it still works perfectly. To be on the safe side I bought two new cocking racks in case I need to replace the ones in the Ib or my IIc someday.

Wow, Nice work Chris! - I've never managed to get a repaired one to run that smoothly, they've always felt a bit 'crunchy'.
An awesome tip about using one of the hardened reflex racks as a shaper for the teeth.. definitely going to try that! ❤
I'm sure I've seen you do it before as well, but i often don't remove the shutter to do the timing. I just loosen the little cover on the transfer shaft, lift it slightly and then position the teeth on the shutter ring with a screwdriver.

Someone asked this, but the comment disappeared before i could answer..
"Hello ! The back of my retina won't open. I wanted to change the film and the button doesn't move, impossible to press it. with the last film I had no problems, has anyone already had this problem?"
The back-catch is probably jammed with corrosion and/or grit. The answer is to press the button REALLY hard, on the edge of the table if necessary. Once the camera back is open you can lubricate the catch.

I have a Retina IIc that I just love using. I have the Schneider 50mm f/2.8 Xenon lens, and I even have an original plastic lens hood for this lens. However, the one issue I've experienced is that the rangefinder patch is slow to move as I adjust focus on the lens. It seems like the rangefinder patch in the viewfinder is gummed-up somehow and just keeps the focus from feeling snappy. It focuses accurately, but I wish it was not behaving this way. What do I need to clean/lube in order to restore perfect function?
