Hurts’s contract though truly locks him up, while the Jones contract effectively only guarantees 2 years. If it doesn’t work out with Jones (which personally I don’t see happening because he’s way better than people give him credit for), the Giants can cut him after 2 years $66M and be left with only $18M in dead cap.
Also the beginning of Hurts’s deal is essentially buying out one year of his rookie deal plus the 5th year option, so the first 2 years are obviously gonna look a lot cheaper than you would expect.
If I'm not mistaken, the Lions offered Williams a contract, and then he ended up taking less money with the Saints. As much as I loved watching him play and ... well, be generally a joyous person, it was Williams that forced the signing.

Very funny, Perna. I would like to hear a good criticism of the Hawks off-season, even though I feel like it would be splitting hairs a bit. Although getting potentially an all star corner duo and potentially the best receiver room in the NFL (not assured, of course) is great, but... Even with getting Dre'mont Jones, Bobby Wagner (who was a bit expensive), and Jarren Reed as well as several later round draft picks for the O and D lines, I feel like beefing up those lines even more could have benefitted us more than elite secondary players and receivers. Also, we could have moved on from Jamal Adams, though obviously I hope he has an excellent season. I'm worried we're just going to see him injured again... I'm going to love watching the air battles this coming year even if our run defense is bottom tier again, but I hope to God they can stop a RB to save their lives.

Skylar went from a raw rookie to giving the Bills a run for their money in the playoffs with just a handful of starts. If he had had all the 2nd team reps, he could have looked even better.

I appreciate what Brown did in KC but he isn't one of the top tackles in the NFL. Mahomes mobility helped him a lot. He struggles against pass rushers that have good speed. I think he was ranked outside of the top 20 last year.
In the Colts' defense, not acquiring another LT seems like a win-win for an at-best fringe playoff team. Either Raimann proves himself as a long term piece or the team likely sucks enough to land Olumuyiwa Fashanu from Penn State, J.C. Honestly, signing/not-signing Jones was always going to be the worst move for the Giants. The alternative to Jones was Tyrod Taylor/Andy Dalton and Levis...not great to say the least. But Jones is in the "fine" category of QB and its not easy to win a super bowl with that. Best move was resigning Sexy Dex before Q. Williams. Likely saved 5-10 million dollars.

The lions offered Williams the same contract offer they gave Montgomery but he had to sign before FA and he was wanting crazy money...I'd say Montgomery is the same player between the tackles and better on the outside and catching/blocking plus we still have the same oline that just moves body's id imagine our run game remains the same

Honestly, signing/not-signing Jones was always going to be the worst move for the Giants. The alternative to Jones was Tyrod Taylor/Andy Dalton and Levis...not great to say the least. But Jones is in the "fine" category of QB and its not easy to win a super bowl with that.
Best move was resigning Sexy Dex before Q. Williams. Likely saved 5-10 million dollars.
