Don't think they're "abandoned". They are probably artificially aged and beaten down to look aged, dirty and abandoned so that they can make a restoration video out of it. Still the process is quite interesting and intriguing nonetheless.

I would have used a small brush to remove the dirt. Using a blade will damage the plastic and metal.
