My Ultimate Category (Multi-Item) & Bulk Sorting + Storage System - Allay Accelerated MIS

  • UPDATE (Aug 29, 2023): The tutorial for the full system is now live! • TUTORIAL: Ultimate Cat...
    -----
    When I came back to the game, the biggest problem was inventory management! My sorting + storage solution combines several different systems - here are the features:
    - 2x intake/sorting speed
    - Can take any item type (stackables, nonstackables, full/empty shulker boxes)
    - Multi-item/category sorting
    - Bulk item sorting + shulker compression
    - Chunk-loaded (machine won't unload when you travel out of range/to the nether and fits inside a 3x3 chunk area)
    One thing I also want to call out here is how brilliant ‪@MaizumaGames‬ 's original system is - the ability to have 1-wide category assignment of items is just absolutely mindblowing to me, and the solution is so elegant and easy to understand.
    I also believe I may have made a novel contribution to multi-item sorting tech (at least, as far as I know, I haven't seen this approach/modification for multi-item sorting up to the release of this video)! I'm calling it Allay Accelerated Multi-Item/Category sorting! It's certainly not the fastest, but it's reasonably effective, and fun! :P

    Ver02 (Nov 26, 2023): www.mediafire.com/file/pbv1rq...
    - corrected orientation of systems so they were consistent with the curved rail patterns (current item system rails are correct if you are facing west when you are looking in from the main entrance of the room)
    - added guide for curved rails based on north/south/east/west direction of the minecart (straight powered rails are fine everywhere, but are just a bit slower!)
    - added note about resetting allays if trying to copy + paste schematic into world
    - added a cross section of the full AA 1.0/2.0 MIS + bulk sorting
    For anyone having trouble getting the allays in place, here's a mini-guide (the fuller tutorial will explain this in more detail): imgur.com/a/1P7fHMG

    UPDATE (Jun 17, 2023): Thanks everyone for the comments, feedback, and general interest in my storage system - I was completely blown away! I've also received enough requests - I'll be doing a full tutorial for the system! Please give me a bit of time to pull it together, there are a ton of pieces and the editing will take me a while. I've already started on recording footage for it, though!
    But before that, I'll be releasing a mini-tutorial: How to double/triple your MIS sorting speed with Allay Acceleration! (step by step directions on how to upgrade Maizuma's MIS with Allay Acceleration). This will contain most of the vital info for those primarily interested in building that part of the sorting system.

For anyone who's having issues with the build: for any of you who have rotated the system and built it, make sure the rail shortcut system is flipping the right way when it receives power - sometimes the signal will need to reverse, so just add a redstone torch at some point in that circuit and you should be good to go!

    Love it. Minor comments-
    you could make the input a little more compact and seamless with one of the Storage Tech discords interfaces-just simplifies the loading process

      Thanks so much for your suggestions!!
      - awesome suggestion with the input, regrettably it's the part I put the least time into outsourcing the design for
      - I was always a bit wary of shulker displays due to the space that most of them seemed to take, but I'd be happy to add a low-profile one! Do you have any particular authors or builds I should investigate? Any recommendations would be appreciated!

    • @t.duebber
      @t.duebber ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Toots_Thielemans disclaimer - I have way less practical knowledge than you, just an understanding of where the tech landscape is atm.
      The Storage Tech discord (which I just realized I should NOT try to abbreviate 😂) has a whole archive of components including shulker displays, so I'd start there. You could also swap the loader+display setup for a Hybrid bulk, which is (objectively) way cooler. I think MoonyInspired has some designs for that.
      Also, the categorizer isn't currently the best mis available- I think most people would say it's rapscallion's Misv5. The problem is that most of those storagetek guys talk so far over my head that nothing makes sense 😅
      There's definitely nothing wrong with your system, though. The allay thing is legitimately very cool and nothing I've seen before.

    This is very interesting. Just wanna ask, how does this system compares to J-MIS or Moony-Mis though?

    • @Toots_Thielemans
      @Toots_Thielemans  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My system's intake speed is throttled to 2x hopper speed - this is because of the way the bulk storage works, but technically, the MIS component operates at >3x hopper speed. As far as I know, the Mooney-Mis system operates at just under 1x hopper speed, so this is more than twice as fast. That said, there are plenty of faster systems than mine out there, like Lummie Thief's (th-cam.com/video/tRj52w8dptc/w-d-xo.html). A lot of the effective speeds of these systems depend upon the distribution of the item input and number of item types, though!

  • @sarsedasek8824
    @sarsedasek8824 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hey man, great system that you're showing up here, thanks for that. I first tried to buid it myself and I came across a little problem, the multi-item sorter was simply sucking up all my filters and the sorter blocks once i put Shulker/items in the input. I've later noticed, there was iron block in the dropper all around the rails and i just forgot them... I cannot tell exactly why, because after some time spent on it I just paste the schematic hey :p

    • @Toots_Thielemans
      @Toots_Thielemans  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ahhh! yeah that makes sense, without those iron blocks in the dropper latches, everything is fully unlocked and I'm sure it just wrecks everything with those top hoppers below the rails! I think it's an understandable issue though, I've noticed when pasting schematics onto servers that none of the contents of containers are brought into the build (I think it happens when you don't have litematica on the server, or potentially NBT data not carrying over), so the iron blocks would be missing upon pasting the schematic! Sounds like you have it working now which is great to hear! Give me a shout if it's giving you any troubles!

    • @sarsedasek8824

      @@Toots_Thielemans Update : So I've pasted the schematic on single player mode, everything was working fine till I edit all the chests to custom sorters as i wanted but I wasn't aware of specifications about x16 stcackable items so it wasn't working. I then corrected that by taking out 3 filter items per x16Items and replaced water bottles by x64 filter sticks instead, just to check.
      Now when the minecart hopper goes around, between 1 to 4 filter sticks get sucked in and the blocks I'm trying to sort out get stuck in the hopper beside comparator that's above the sorting chest.
      Iron blocks are in the droppers this time ^^
      Post Update : Everything's alright !!! When i tried to find out what was the problem I took all the wooden shovel out the hoppers/barrel in the minecart area. I admit i just try to build it like this, without really understnding what going on, stupid me, that's how we get better haha.

I'm racing to finish my tutorial (I'm about a week away from editing it all), but fortunately this is a design from -Dutfer-, who already has a great tutorial on making that shulker unloader (which I also use part of for the item intake) - here's the part relating to your question (link to -Dutfer-'s tutorial with the appropriate timestamp): th-cam.com/video/N9BaftOY1vE/w-d-xo.html - please reach out if you have any other questions!

      Thank you! Hmm by item stack set do you mean category of multiple items? With this system, you can set any single stackable item in the bulk storage filter, and it will load that item into shulker boxes for you. I hope I answered your question, please let me know if I’ve misunderstood!

      Thank you!! I built the system originally on a tiny server (2GB of RAM) that was pretty laggy, and I haven't had any issues! As long as it's vanilla and there aren't any special rules about item grouping, hopper speeds, or hopper minecart speeds, you should be good!

  • @SAPuddles
    @SAPuddles 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I love this, it's very clever and works great -- however, if you plan on building it on a server check to see if mobGriefing is enabled. If that rule is not enabled then this will not work - allays do not pick up items if mobGriefing is false

      So I have made this full thing on a SMP server using papermc - some things to keep in mind.
      Paper defaults to 2.5x the radius of vanilla for grouping item entities, so the item batcher doesnt really function - I tried adjusting the amount of blocks in teh hoppers to drop 11 blocks instead of 22 - worked in single player but not multiplayer, even took a full schematic of the one i built and it works fine so idk whats up with that. I used the same 2x shulkerbox loader shown here, but I flipped it so I could put on a different item filter (one that allows me to get 62 of an item and wont overflow into other filters - but it uses 2 stacked cursed books, and paper also fixes that bug so I had to ask server admin if they could change that in config)
      I would suggest setting up a fail safe/auto off if the allays stop picking up shovels, which mine did - I took a comparator signal off of the first barrel of shovels, if it becomes empty then it will set off an audible alarm and stop the minecart hopper underneath the input chest, a messy solution but a quick one
      If the allays stop grabbing shovels then I found undloading the chunk then coming back usually worked, but they will also sometimes throw a shovel into the item stream so there is a slow but continuous bleed of shovels into the system, and losing all the shovels is catastrophic for the sorter.
      I added on the compressor segment on the end of the system (stolen shamelessly from the ReCategorizer by Maizuma) to be able to box load unstackables at will.
      Overall works great, I strongly suggest putting in a failsafe as the shovel problem is significant.

      @@SAPuddles - appreciate you! I'll be releasing this tutorial tomorrow (if all goes smoothly with the render) - I've just recorded a last-minute design for a failsafe to turn the system off when blocker items run low (it basically pulses the dropper which keeps the RS-latch piston extended, so it will cut off all future cycles until the user goes up manually and fixes it) and will add it into the video before pushing it out! :D

    This might be a dumb question. But could you get rid of the Allay’s by using shulker boxes as non stacking fillers. Then just dump them into shulker chest at the end of the loop?

    • @Toots_Thielemans
      @Toots_Thielemans  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I definitely considered it. The problem with that is that we’d then have to pass all of the items through a filter, which would constrain the speed of that release process. The main advantage of this approach is that we avoid any filtering or hopper processing since we’re able to separate all of it as entities. Lmk if it doesn’t make sense!

    It’s a great system but in my opinion there is one problem. If you don’t have enough to fill a whole skulker box it won’t get dropped into the chest. So you have to put items into the system until a whole shucker box is filed and just than you are able to get to the items. But besides this it’s really great.

    • @Toots_Thielemans
      @Toots_Thielemans  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a totally fair point. I’ve been considering a resolution for it but haven’t found anything low-profile enough to consider adding. I think this also might speak to the system being designed for my specific playstyle (which usually leads to an inventory with a relatively small count of many different category items and a huge count of a relatively small number bulk items due to farms feeding directly into the system). It’s definitely not perfect for everyone and that’s worth calling more attention to. The one thing I’ll say though is that for items I didn’t start with much of, I put those into the upper category chests, and as it looked like I was starting to accumulate too much (maybe 1-2 shulker’s worth), I’d move them down into the bulk section and remove them from the category. Not an ideal way to handle the issue, but it makes the system a bit more usable!

    hey man, my friend and i are currently building this on survival, but we have a problem, it seems that the minecarts with hoppers are desicronized and we think it can be because of the rails, bc the orientation of them is west and north, so it may be something with the timing, this makes the allays to not drop the shovels in time and they dont get the new ones in coming (or thats what we think), also now for some eason when we put an item that is not filtered, instead of going to the overflow, the minecart's cycle just stops, any help will be much apreciated, thanks

    • @Toots_Thielemans
      @Toots_Thielemans  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey there! Take a look at the world download if you're rotating the direction of the system, it has guides on how to do curved rails to speed things up depending on the direction the minecart is headed (N/S/E/W), but you could use straight rails while you debug this, it shouldn't play a factor. If the allays aren't picking up the items, make sure 1) there's space for the nonstackable blocker items in the hoppers the allays are sitting in (it should be enough to empty just that top hopper they're all in, but you could leave more space to be safe, and since you're doing this in survival, I assume the allays weren't copy + pasted (this sometimes breaks them), but the other thing i'd check is 2) if you have more than 5 allays. I noticed that when I had too many (7+), they would start tossing the item back and forth, which completely threw off their item cycle pickup and broke the system. Is it possibly either of those?

      @xavierisg9133 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Toots_Thielemans Hey toots! We managed to solve the problem, it happened because of the orientation of the whole thing. In the rail of the corner, which change orientation in order to prevent the minecart of going all the way through the other chests unnecessarily, when activated, it should point to the shortcut, but because of the orientation, it was inverted, so when activated it went through the long way. To fix this we just add a block with a redstone torch to invert the redstone signal. Idk if you already knew this but i hope it can help you with the tutorial or something. @@xavierisg9133 - AHHHH, and if you're doing the 2.0 version, triggering the next cycle with the shortcut signal but not getting the shortcut rail would be disastrous! In fact, I imagine what was happening was the 2nd minecart that was triggered by the shortcut signal was re-locking the categories as it went under the filter chests, and since the 1st minecart had been sent on the long route, all categories had been re-locked by the time we released the items onto the ice path! Definitely will call that out in the tutorial (mini-tutorial on the allay section is nearly done, not that you need it at this point 😝)! I'm also struggling a bit. The multi sorter on west aka the back wall is causing me problems. The Item from the sorting chest gets taken out but when the hopper minecart, but when it goes back over it. It isn't putting the item back in and unlocking the hoppers. If i run it with an item from the right side or north it works great the item gets taken out then put back in no problem. Ive recopyed the world download multiple times and looked at every block. I just cant figure out what i did wrong.

    • @Toots_Thielemans
      @Toots_Thielemans  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! So for the chunk loader, it's just soulfire/regular fire right on the ground level of the nether portal (you want the fire to break the minecart when it gets sent through, which will turn it into a dropped entity and pass it through the portal, activating it again before it gets sucked into the hopper minecart and pumped back through the system again. Here's a straightforward tutorial: th-cam.com/video/ZGoPerYa8aw/w-d-xo.html but really, you can use any chunk loader you like!
      The issue described sounds most like a problem with the category filter chests. Something that sometimes happens is that if there are too many sticks loaded into it (the blocker sticks named "s1"), removing a single category filter item won't drop the signal by 1 and unlock the hopper above it. You can check to see if this is the problem by going down the line of your category filter chests on that side. Verify that when you remove a category filter item, the torch above the category (running out of the target block) should turn on, and when you replace the item it should turn off again.
      I'll have more guidance on this when I release a tutorial, but in the meantime if you still have questions, I'd recommend Maizuma's original video which provides a great reference for the proper category filter chest setup: th-cam.com/video/2pEZbF2pWqY/w-d-xo.html

      Thanks for pointing out one of the more problematic oversights with the world save! I've updated the world save with a few guides that will hopefully assist you with this for future attempts:
      - the systems have all been rotated towards West to be consistent with the curved rail patterns we see there
      - if you're looking to rotate the system, the starting area of the world save has some basic guides for the alternative curved rail patterns you'd need based on which direction the hopper minecart is moving - I'll be slowly gathering together a tutorial for this in the coming weeks, where I'll discuss this stuff more thoroughly, but hopefully this is enough to provide some temporary assistance in the meantime!
      - yeah entities seem to get messed up when copying to different worlds (especially online worlds where the servers don't have litematica installed), my guess would be that NBT data is somehow getting lost or not stored in the schematic + loading step
      - to assist with this, i've added a full cross section of the MIS + bulk storage so you can see how the hopper minecarts should look, and have added a special note about how allays sometimes need to be reset if you're copying and pasting from a schematic across worlds.
      Hope this helps! :)

      If I’m understanding you right, one section is always unlocked, so items always get sucked in? If that’s the case, it seems like something is keeping power from going into that activator rail between the two hopper minecarts. Id make sure first off that your RS-latch droppers for that slice contain 1 item, and that the bottom signal from the detector rail (which resets the top and locks everything) is powering all of the lower droppers properly. From there, make sure the block with the activator rail is solid, and if none of that helps, maybe send me a SS or short clip of the problem?

      I took some time to think about what you said, and by the sound of it, it seems like you're getting 2 quick pulses before the first minecart can even get to the detector rail. The system locks itself with that detector rail, but if you get a quick on-off-on pattern before it hits that detector rail, it can happen. That suggests the issue might be your item intake. Is all of the batching stuff setup, as well as the hopper minecart stacking that goes into the main input chest (by main input chest, I mean the one the hopper minecart takes items from at the start of the sorting cycle)? It should allow for gaps so this doesn't happen, but I'm positive there's a workaround if that's the issue. Don't worry, we'll fix it! :D

I haven't really seen a "go-to" guide for this, but the trick I've found is to get one single allay into a hopper, push a slab over it, then just duplicate it as needed (should only need 3 waves of duping to get 5-6 with a 2.5 min cooldown). I'll occasionally try blocks out in creative mode (mostly out of curiosity), but I'll usually avoid anything that makes the game too easy or revert any changes that aren't achievable in survival, though. I didn't really find any immediately interesting uses for barriers in my world, but I have definitely enjoyed implementing modless autocrafting with pretty simple command block setups to cut out some of the more tedious work (I use command blocks to compress stuff like iron ingots into blocks and dried kelp into blocks from farms). I've got a few tutorials in the queue for my next vids, but once those are done I plan to make a video about how I use some of that stuff for anyone interested! :)

      @@Toots_Thielemans interesting stuff! I’d highly recommend using data packs instead, as they’re pretty much command blocks without the block and apply to the whole world. They’re not too hard to set up and if you know how to use commands, then making one is pretty simple. They could be used to do the various custom crafting things you were talking about

    why do so many items go into over flow

    • @Toots_Thielemans

      Hmm, there shouldn't be THAT much overflow. The real problem is if assigned items go into the overflow, but even still, that shouldn't be happening in general.

      @@user-nr8bv9es8i it DOES look like some bedrock multi-item sorting exists though from what I can tell: th-cam.com/video/f7kejWU4Rec/w-d-xo.html - on a quick look it seems that this uses category filtering with a minecart in a way that's extremely similar to Maizuma's design (which is what mine uses) - so this might be a good starting point, then you could see what's possible to build next to/alongside this system in terms of bulk storage. That would be pretty close to this system!

      I think I saw some minecart-based sorting system for Bedrock the other day, but it seemed like there were a lot of cross-chunk and minecart entity consistency issues. Are those the main problems?

      @@Toots_ThielemansIt's not often that see a creator reply to one of your comments lol. I heard of entity unloading issues but I've never personally encountered them. I'm looking for a storage system that has the same, or as close as possible to the UI, as the one in this video. I've been looking around, but haven't found anything yet. I'm not what you would call a redstone engineer but I might have a go at designing one myself. If you find anything, I would appreciate it if you sent links. Or, if you feel up to it, it might be a neat challenge for yourself lol.
