Gee, I just loved this discussion. For those who are new to sewing, pay close attention! I've been sewing since I was a little girl (now I'm 71) and can't tell you how many times I was disappointed in a project, almost to the point of defeat, because I'd never have anyone explain how to match up patterns with fabrics, or how to create for the joy of it vs. making up those necessary "project" items in order to round out a wardrobe. You will eventually learn through trial and error, but these ladies had a delightful way of explaining that should save those new to moderately new to this craft lots of stress. Even advanced sewers find that this topic was a gap in their training.

Love this! I adore sewing with linen and denim and handwoven cotton. They feel so beautiful to handle and I love wearing them.

Great information. Thank you. I would love an in person class on shirts (really any garment class would be nice 😁) It would be worth the trip to Montreal.
Do you think you would have a class 🤩❤

I loved this video! I would say I'm an intermediate to advanced intermediate sewer, but still a beginner at understanding fabric and fabric/pattern pairing. All the different weaves still really confuse me which is hard since I do most of my fabric shopping online. I've reached out to your staff before to help with fabric choice and always have got very good advice, so thanks!
As for favorite fabric to sew with, I love a blend with cotton or linen and viscose so you get some of the stability of the first with a lovely drape from the viscose. :) Even cotton-linen together is lovely.

Thanks for a very informative video, the key issue is that fabric sellers often dont label fabrics fully! P.S. Would have liked to see both of you contribute equally to the conversation

I have the same situation that my local store has a bunch of bolts labeled 100% cotton, but they are not all the same weight or texture

Chambray is another fabric that would fit in the category of mid weight stable and therefore easier to cut and sew.

Thank you for this explanation of different cottons!
Could you tell me, what is the blue denim jacket pattern on the dress form?

It's the Sandstone Jacket from our pattern subscription, Crew! It is currently only available with an Unlimited membership!

My favorite fabrics are wovens, particularly cotton like shirting, and denim, and wool - crepe, medium weight. I have a heavy weight wool deadstock I got from Core slated for a warm jacket. I'll appreciate these more after I'm done sewing the current project, leggings!!😂

Are there industry standards for what constitutes a voile or a lawn or a poplin? Also you mentioned gsm. If I know the length and width of my fabric, is there a formula to calculate the weight in gsm? I am imagining measuring my fabric and then putting it on the kitchen scale.... I bought a piece of something off a sale table in Finland that I was told is 100% cotton, and now I am trying to decide what to do with it

Ok so you just said you go to London to teach a class. Do you ever teach live, in person, classes in Montreal? I can do online, and I know you do have classes like that but I would just love to do a one day or weekend workshop with you. I have been a member of Crew since its inception and I would love to meet you ladies in person. Most of the in person workshops I have seen are in the US. Montreal is only a 2 hour drive. Please please.
    Thanks
