What an awesome shoutout guys! We got lucky when this somehow left the warehouse early and ended up on the shelf in our liquor store! I'm a lover of Macallan and the Editions have all been excellent whiskies!
Its so funny watching this hearing you mention Roja Dove....my #1 hobby being a fragrance collector/enthusiast....he makes some super expensive and phenomenal smelling fragrances for both men and women so a whiskey involved with such a prestigious Master perfumer has to be wonderful
Major kudos to you guys for reposting this with a correction. I know it was probably at least a bit to stave off a lot of future "well actually" comments, but nevertheless I think this shows integrity and it's just another reason I'm glad to be a part of the Tribe. Great video today regardless. Slainte!
I think that might have been my comment about the small barrel, if not I commented almost the exact same thing I have since done it... I used Oak Barrels Limited 1 L barrel and as far as I could tell the barrel was great, no leaks after being prepared properly First I put in sherry/port (75% Lustau sherry then topped off with tawny port) followed by lagavulin 8... then went in old grand dad 114... then laphroig 10...then a black Manhattan cocktail blend... then a Guinness... then Jameson classic Honestly, everything came out very well (except the Guinness)... the old grand dad is probably my favorite, it tastes almost like a brisket because of the peaty finish. But they are all really worth doing I highly recommend trying this, I was shocked that I actually ended up improving the whiskeys I put in (or at least changing in a good way)
So Macallan doesn't have a smell guy on staff? I'm still volunteering any distillery that is listening my services as a sound guy to check the pops on those corks.
I've been using a small barrel I bought on Amazon from a store called Sofia's Findings. Not sure who makes the barrels for them but I've had pretty good luck with it once it was properly prepared
Awesome integrity o the reupload. And awesome of you guys to be featuring other great channels like the dummies, cask strength, and aquavitae. You truly are maki bff a more magnificent whisky culture!
Daniel has mentioned horchata at least half a dozen times over the last few years and I think even made it once on a Whiskey Tribe video and to this day Rex has that blank look on his face ever time he hears the word. At least this time he asked “...that sweetened milk?” 😂
Yesterday I had the immense pleasure of tasting the indian whiskey Rex and Daniel tried a few videos ago. MY GOD WAS IT GOOD, and it definitely had that peaty finish like a soft islay. It was sooo good I told my wife to buy it for me as a birthday present
Okay, reposting my comment from before the new edit. It was basically as follows: Someone got me a cask from Bespoke Post. 1 liter. It became liquid tight without much effort, but you have to put the spigot in yourself. Check out a bar above’s video on barrel aging cocktails for a good tutorial. I aged a Rob Roy for three weeks. It came out good, slightly oaky. Then I rested a blended scotch for 24 hours and it came out with a “Rob Roy finish.” Remarkable color and flavor change. Then I aged a wheat vodka for three weeks. Came out amazing. DEEP caramel color, buttery biscuit drizzled with fruit syrup. My friend is currently aging tawny port in one; he’s looking to put a finish on an American single-malt. Then perhaps do a clear spirit. The common wisdom is that each fill will require slightly more time, and be less and less oaky. After 5 or 6 fills, it’s probably given most of what it’s got. Unless you leave something in there for a long time... Great video as usual. I like Big Lebowski Rex the best, by the by. You guys are heroes. Cheers.
I've bought two barrels from Oak Barrels Ltd. I'm still seasoning them. One with a Taylor Fladgate port finish and the other with a Vito Curatolo Arini Marsala finish. However, the barrels seem to be a bit leaky. Not too bad though and the price was right! My plan is to age Laphroaig 10 in both!
kevdonde That sounds amazing. I might do an Islay next. I wanted to use something less peaty to start so the effects could be easily detected. Although the peat will probably stand up to the oak really well. I’d be interested to see the result if, after you age the Laphroaig, you aged a clear spirit. I know that vodka and new-make whisky aren’t technically the same thing, but as far as I can tell the difference is minuscule. ...Right? If it’s distilled from the same grain? It’s just a few percent abv between them (I think). Good luck with your whisky experiments!
@@captainbamis7257 so my plan for the port barrel is to then lend it to a friend and let him make some beer in it. Then bring it back for another full of something. Drink both the whisky and the beer. For my marsala cask, I want to then do a bourbon and see how it picks up on the peat. I definitely want to get to a new make / vodka as well. Maybe for my next barrel or because that will be cheap I'll make it one of my last films on one of these barrels.
kevdonde Yeah man. That certainly does sound magnificent. I may have to steal some of those ideas. Or ‘mooch’ them. My vote is yeah, once the cask is little more than a vatting vessel, throw in some cheapo clear spirit and forget about it for a while, because, why not? Bourbon-peat-beer thing sounds interesting. Like if Caskmates had a baby with High West Campfire. 🍻🔥🥃

John Guentzel I have given theirs as gifts and everyone has loved them. We did tastings every 15 days. There was a horrible whiskey that we should have pulled at 60 days and not given it any more time. They have wonderful customer service too!

How many times can you reuse a cask? If you can "season" it with one whiskey to prime it for another, can you keep repeating the process to create an infinity cask?
That’s why I haven’t bought one of the small barrels yet. I’ve just read too many reviews that say the barrels are bad. Does anyone have any suggestions?
So for the perfume smell of these, is it created by what would naturally go into a whiskey, just turned up to 11 or is it done with chemical additives? I would assume the former but was just curious.
I'm picturing Rex and his young, poor friends crowded around a table sharing/fighting over a single order of the Chilean sea bass because, well, they were young and poor.
Sorry boys. It's too late. Like most Americans today....I heard it on the interwebz so it MUST be true. Roja is the official perfumer for Macallan and he has his own corner office at the new distillery :) He also smells fantastic.
So, what happens if Macallan actually hired this master perfumer to create of a line of Macallan whisky influenced fragrances and colognes. I guess reedit the reedit.
