HE didn't go unplugged though he lost service and didn't have a way to contact them that's totally different from going into the woods and deciding not to have any or use any electronics on you which is what unplugged means

That was definitely the right thing to do, better safe than sorry. From Matties point of view there was a good chance something was wrong, which if there was the decision to call the police could have literally been life saving. We all need a friend like this in our lives who looks out for us
Exactly! Which is also why I kind of don't understand why this Carter guy made a TikTok about that situation in the first place, making it seem like his roomie was super clingy, or overly cautious, or straight up mean (calling the police ON him). So now Mattie had to explain themselves. Not to mention they started with "my bad" as if they did anything wrong. That night could have ended very differently if Carter had actually been in trouble and nobody had thought to check on him.
I get it was probably just meant to be funny but this just comes across as "lol my roomie called the cops on me?? No Chill!" instead of "the moment I forgot to tell something important to my friend and the police ended up looking for me".
@@claraw7911 Yeah, it was a bit of a bad choice of words on Carter's part tbh. Mattie called the police *for* him rather than *on* him. I hope Mattie didn't feel bad or upset about it. I'm sure they've had a private conversation about it all though, they're good friends so I'm sure they've worked it out between themselves. I agree Carter didn't handle the situation very well though, from not telling anyone where he was going to the way he went about that video... as long as Mattie is okay about it and he apologised then it's all fine I guess.

I mean, a few small risks are okay here and there, you need to take risks sometimes to get anywhere in life. But when that risk is the possibility of becoming the subject of a new episode of a true crime documentary/podcast or some other painful, scary, life-threatening situation you can count me out...
Police RARELY EVER do anything that saves lives. They mostly just imprison & kill minorities and harass people . . . In my experience. Calling the police invites the law and government into your private life. Your friend may end up in prison depending on where they are and what they’re doing.
😭 that’s what love is. Looking out for others when they don’t know they need it. He thinking it’s all fine but you rather be safe than sorry.
I watch a lot of those caving and hiking stories of people who are known to disappear for days at a time and so it took people way longer to realize they were in trouble. And a TON of them died because of it.
Even if people know you’re leaving long term, always try to have a contact or plan. And Mattie did what any good home contact would do

Honestly I've heard so many "oh they probably changed there mind I'll hear from them later" stories that end with the worst case scenario so I think it's best to be a little paranoid
Seriously, cause I watch waaaay too many crime docs where their friends go missing and how the first 24-48 hours are the most crucial. I'm definitely the friend who says please text me when you're home and if I don't hear from you within the 24 hour mark I start to panic.

My housemate once reported me missing at 1am and the police came and searched my room for clues. I came home drunk at 4am with a dead phone cause it was Friday night. I'd left in my Papa John's uniform so she hadn't realised I had a change of clothes in my bag to go out after work.

Almost did this to my last college roommate. She was a freshman, 19, had literally done one tour of campus and didn’t know the town at all. She goes out her second day there, around 10am with this person that she met at orientation and a group of people she barely knows. Im a big sister, I’m also like 3 years older than this girl and had met her parents who were very nice. By 10pm I was getting nervous. By 2am I was googling how long I should wait before filing a missing persons report. By 4am I was staring at my phone trying to figure out what to tell the cops so they could even begin finding her. Finally decided just to go to bed and call report it in the morning if she still wasn’t back. Girl comes in at 7am perfectly fine and I’m just so relieved that she’s not dead in a ditch and wasn’t dare raped or something that I didn’t even lecture her. (Fyi if u have legitimate concerns that someone is missing u can file immediately, the 48hrs thing is bullshit)
