- A wildly original indie experimentalist and a group of Korean-pop superstars get together for the first time and find common ground and mutual admiration.
Grimes is a self-taught, self-produced artist who released her first album on a small indie label more than a decade ago. Aespa is a girl group formed during the pandemic by one of K-pop’s leading labels, composed of four extremely hardworking women - Karina, Giselle, Winter, and Ningning - who sing, dance, and have shot to superstardom over the past three years.
The pairing of the two artists might seem random, but consider this: Grimes’ love of K-pop goes back more than a decade, and she’s extremely interested in new technologies - including Elf.Tech, an AI music-software program that allows anyone to replicate her voice in their own music, and an AI girl group she created called NPC. When Aespa debuted during the pandemic, they made the most of everyone remote-living by introducing four virtual counterparts for the girls. The virtual members are part of carefully crafted lore woven into the group’s videos and lyrics, and they’re called the æ members - a letter, coincidentally, that’s used in the names of two of Grimes’ children.

Yeah but she is independent, these girls don't have that autonomy, it's a job for them, not saying they aren't passionate about what they do, it's just they don't have the authority over their style and direction like grimes does. I think she under appreciates or doesn't realise as much how much autonomy she has over her music
Agreed, and in fact I even found this interview a bit awkward lol. Grimes has always been eccentric about her tastes and expressions and I kinda cringed at how obvious it was that even someone as fluent in english as Giselle wasn't catching on to her references to algorithms and integrations to artificial intelligence. I feel sorry for Ningning, Karina, and Winter ngl.
Im not calling Aespa dumb or anything since this really just boils down to cultural and language differences. Its just that someone as Avant Garde as Grimes really is an ironic combo with meticulously crafted industry babies like Aespa.
@@mementomori5670 Agreed! Couldn't watch the full interview because of this. All I was thinking was, Giselle probably even needs a translator. Not because her English is no good, but Grimes is really particular in the way she speaks and her interest. You really described the juxtaposition between the girls well.
Agreed. It felt like a lot of Grimes’ questions would be better suited for SM’s producers and music development department versus the members themselves. Aespa simply don’t have the level of control or involvement that Grimes has when it comes to concept, song lyrics, etc. You can tell Aespa didn’t really know how to answer those questions. It probably doesn’t help that it seems like the parts of the concept that Grimes is the most excited by are the parts the girls like the least (like the virtual members and cyber themed lyrics).
They definitely needed a strong translator and mediator for this; you can really feel the distance caused by such a strong language barrier and the conversation has so many lulls could’ve been avoided. Big kudos to Giselle for taking the lead with her english and holding her own!

@@jaehyuniversity she definitely can shape her answer in better way instead of pulling down any other groups. Aespa can work well because there is two foreigners in group, which Korean members will be more focus! The foreigners can only just accept what the company had planned for them.

Grimes is just in another level of creativity. It’s incomparable to K-pop. I’m not downplaying the creativity needed to make music no matter the genre. But grimes is visibly and quite literally “otherworldly”

Grimes obviously got this chance to have an interview with aespa cause she likes them. It's very possible for them to make a music collab in the near future. Just like she said, "Oh it's nepotism." 💀 But tbh, they do have similar concepts in music and music videos. SM won't decline an opportunity with her just as they didn't decline this interview because she's Grimes. 🤷♀️
You can tell the girls literally have no actual knowledge about their own concept but I appreciate them trying. Grimes is really exhausting to listen to though.

Grimes has such an adorable...it's not a lisp, it's sort of a slightly mushy-mouthed way of speaking? I'm sure there's a word for it but I don't know what it is. I love it, it reminds me of Holly Hunter's voice. It sounds so cute and unique.

I honestly wish Grimes didn’t use such big words in this interview. Not undermining Aespa’s English comprehension, but it can be hard to follow her mindpath for a non-native English speaker. It can be hard to get engagement with all the members (except for Giselle obviously) if her ideas are not concise. It’s even hard for me to follow as someone who’s main language is English lol…

Yes, even a natural English speaker will have difficulty keeping up with Grimes. She is eccentric, unique and always has a lot in her mind. So the language barrirer I think was even more difficult. But I think aside from Giselle, Winter was also able to express herself well.
I can tell she’s intelligent but she’s not very articulate which is common, but nervousness especially being around Aespa could also be a factor

Fax, its funny since most of the concepts and themes that Grimes compliments Aespa for is all industry crafted by a creative board. They're not as personalized and independent as Grimes think they are and even without the language barrier, I bet they'd still be dumbfounded by most of her observations.
