    Thank you Tilly! I think I'll be using rib knit for my neckbands from now on as they always behave way better than self fabric! Especially if the fashion fabric hasn't got a lot of stretch. Cheers! and happy sewing!😊❤👍

    How do you figure out the length of the neckband?

    • @NYCisland
      @NYCisland 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've read several places a good rule is 90% of the length or the neck, but that depends on how stretchy the neck band material is or personal preference. If you have to pull the shirt over your head, I'd make a sample piece with 6-10" of fabric as the "shirt bodice" and add the neckband. Put the practice shirt on and see if it fits.

    At what stage do you add neckband to cover seam allowance on neck?

  • @laurelallison7

    Hi there... what a great video. When you zig-zag top stitch the neckband down, what stitch width and length do you recommend? Thank you!

    • @SewInBrightonSewingSchool
      @SewInBrightonSewingSchool 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      She recommends 2.5 stitch length and 2.5 stitch width. You could also use twin needle or I sometimes use the 3 step zig zag which looks cute. Another tip is to use a Jersey or Organ Super Stretch needle (from Ebay) instead of an ordinary needle as ordinary ones can miss stitches on jersey. Happy stretchy sewing!

    whats the neckband measurement?

    • @SewTara
      @SewTara 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is the part I can never seem to get right, even when cut from a pattern. Then the neckband doesn't sit properly and I don't know the cause, let along how to fix it! Frustrating. Wish there was a formula for calculating the length you need based on how your neckline body is turning out.

    • @pinsandneedlesx8825
      @pinsandneedlesx8825 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SewTara hi i tried this method after watching few tutorials. After you made you garment. Measure round the neckline and take 80% of that to create the neckband.

    • @pinsandneedlesx8825
      @pinsandneedlesx8825 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SewTara i have only tried this with the same fabric not with ribbing so no idea how to do it

    • @SewInBrightonSewingSchool
      @SewInBrightonSewingSchool 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SewTara I cut the neckband length based on where it will sit on my body. So lay pattern flat and if neckband is, say 2cm wide, measure the curve 2cm in from the neckline (of the top) sewing line. Tip: if your neckband will be 1.5cm wide finished and your neckline seam allowance is 1.5cm, just measure the inner edge of your neck on the pattern.
      I then add seam each short end eg 1cm. I then pin it with little safety pins into a circle and to the neckline in the position the stitching will be and try it on! Press it like Tilly does first otherwise it will be really puffy and hard to tell if fits well.
      I hardly ever sew them straight off because all ribs and jersey's seem to behave differently around the neck, some flip out. The steaming Tilly does at the end will really help a slightly flippy neckband get into place though, but sometimes you will need to shorten it... You'll be glad you pinned and tried before sewing! Happy sewing 👕✂️📍

    Why are you one using zigzag? 💀

    • @Haufrau007
      @Haufrau007 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You use zigzag for stretch fabrics. If you use a straight stitch, the seam would break as soon as you put your head thru it.
