Máxima starts State Visit to Slovakia in Royal Blue

- King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima went to Slovakia for a state visit. At the start of the visit, the King and Queen are welcomed at the Presidential Palace in Bratislava by President Čaputová. After this the royal couple lay a wreath at the Gate of Freedom in Devín, a memorial to those killed between 1948 and 1989 attempting to cross the Iron Curtain. Later in the afternoon, President Čaputová and the mayor of Bratislava Matúš Vallo accompany King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima on a walk through the city’s historical centre. The walk ends at a memorial in memory of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová who were murdered in 2018. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima then met with representatives of the Slovak press, government and police at the Primate’s Palace.
The Slovak Republic is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its establishment this year. The Netherlands and Slovakia work together both at bilateral level and within the European Union and NATO. Both countries promote an open and inclusive society and democratic values and freedoms. Key shared themes are the rule of law, education, press freedom, emancipation and support for Ukraine. Both Slovakia and the Netherlands attach great important to the transition to a circular economy, combating climate change and preserving biodiversity. During the visit the two countries will explore how they can strengthen each other’s efforts in these areas. The state visit will also reinforce the bond of friendship between the two countries.

Maxima's outfit looks dark blue on the video, not royal blue. Cameras & lighting change how colors appear. These nations' work together is crucial for the health of European democracies, helping Ukraine, and keeping that hotbed of Europe safe. Slovakia is in the Bloodlands of Europe and borders the presently difficult Hungarian political system, so they need support.

@@thijseijk25 A little late, but the man in the picture Ján Kuciak was an investigative reporter. He was digging into Slovak ties to mafia and unfortunately he and his fiancée had been killed by assassins sent over to stop him from publishing the article. The article was published anyway. This whole thing happened in 2018 and shook the nation, protesters filled the streets.

What is the monument they were laying flowers at?
It is called the Gate of Freedom and is commemorating those who lost their lives trying to cross the Iron Curtain during the communist era in search of a better life in western Europe. The memorial is situated very close to the border between Slovakia and Austria and the Devin Castle.
