Nice he gave the guys at the transmitters a mention, who maintain the service, often working hundreds of feet above ground, often in appalling weather conditions just to keep the TV service going.

this was my 17th bithday live in the midlands thought nothing could be as good as atv came across these gems how wrong i was thought my nan was the only one to say ninight loved the shipping forecast thought only radio 4 did that pity they didnt play sailing by as well fine professional broadcaster died too soon

Do you know if westward ever used a test pattern when signing off at night before?

They wouldn't have done. At this point any test patterns before the start-up or after closedown would be transmitted by the IBA staff and not the ITV programme contractor. As the IBA was a singular entity, their policy on when and how often to transmit test patterns and for how long would remain the same whichever ITV region you lived in. Remember, it was the IBA who owned the ITV and C4 transmitters, so they dictated what and when the ITV programme companies could broadcast.
So if a testcard was transmitted, it would have been the IBA who transmitted it, it would not have come from Westward.
