When they toured this album in 2015 I don't think I'll ever have another emotional connection to a concert as much I did watching and listening to Seth and Jessica Lea
Pablo Horteg Definitely. I was a hard sell on this cover album originally. Tough to translate the great Elliott Smith. But I think these songs are as respectful as they are well executed under their alt country lens.
I usually find Elliott Smith covers unlistenable because his vocal affect was so unique and crucial to the song delivery, but these guys convey the hell out of this one
Yeah I agree. Elliot’s vocal affect and the emotion he puts into his delivery is just so individual and unique that it requires some adjustment to listen to other artists cover his songs
Stephen Hardy, you made your point on at least one other video of Seth and Jessica singing Elliott Smith. If you don't like her singing, why listen to and comment on multiple videos? Just listen to something else and leave these videos to those of us who like them.
@KEXP why not credit the bass player also? I didn't saw his name and yet he does a subtle and yet important part on their song. Please insert his name in the description.Bass players are human beings also :)
Nice harmonies and voices. I love this song. I first heard (and love) Madeleine Peyroux's gorgeous cover of it which includes piano, then looked up Elliottt Smith and his original. Such a tragedy he's gone. I enjoy hearing other covers of it. The Portland Cello Project has a video of their instrumental performance of it on you tube, also. Beautiful even w/o the lyrics, but I love the lyrics.
Drink up, baby, stay up all night With the things you could do, you won't but you might The potential you'll be that you'll never see The promises you'll only make Drink up with me now and forget all about The pressure of days, do what I say And I'll make you okay and drive them away The images stuck in your head People you've been before that you Don't want around anymore That push and shove and won't bend to your will I'll keep them still Drink up, baby, look at the stars I'll kiss you again, between the bars Where I'm seeing you there, with your hands in the air Waiting to finally be caught Drink up one more time and I'll make you mine Keep you apart, deep in my heart Separate from the rest, where I like you the best And keep the things you forgot People you've been before that you Don't want around anymore That push and shove and won't bend to your will I'll keep them still
this performance = why is my throat tightening up ? and why is my adrenaline conjuring up a friction storm ?... almost feels like Ive awakened something that has been laying frustratingly dormant.. and in its awoken state, it feels all too familiar. this song helps me break away from the robotic template that Ive succumbed to. almost forgot what its like to have ...........you know ??? feelings. RIP Elliot 🖤
at first, thought i hated it.. i mean, it's so much different, like my brain wanted to fight it almost haa. anyways by the end, it made more sense what was going on musically and that last verse and chorus hit me. ✌🏻 guys
Haunting and Beautiful, and that's before I listened enough times to figure out what it's about. Now it's even more so. Anyone know of songs like this?
I really hated this cover when I first heard it. I stopped it half way through. But I came back to it because I couldn't get that twang out of my head.
Beautiful vocal harmonies. I just find it a shame they're not using that killer chord change from the original on the chorus (on "don't want around anymore")...
@@treetopvideo they play Ab (don't) Bb (want) C (around anymore) when Elliot plays G/B (don't) Bb (want) F/A (around anymore) - that descending movement in the bass is just gorgeous
It's a small detail but it really bugs me that they got the chords wrong in the chorus, I guess they either didn't notice or didn't care to find out what they were. It's still a really nice cover though.
Drink up baby I will take care of you at the end like I always do till the morning you won't remember anything and I won't be reminding you who left you behind L:)
Such a beautiful tribute to Elliott Smith. Well done. ❤️

Lovely! I like the southern twang to it.
+Pablo Horteg This!
I know she's such an unbelievable cutie of this world
Yee haw

Drink up baby stay up all night.... with the thangs you could do
obsessed with this song
Best version of the song I've heard. Beautiful
I’m in love with this cover. Really amazing!!!
i could listen to this all day over n over
I played this like 20 times today
Tsubastard Right there with ya.
im right there with yee

beautiful, definitely does the song justice
No words. Well, except those.
Gorgeous rendition. You all rocked!
Love this version.
몇 년째 듣고 있는데 들어도 들어도 너무 좋아요.
I'm usually really protective of elliott and people covering him... most people blow it, but these two are breaking my heart. Fitting tribute.
This is my favorite song
I'm not even sad but tears slide on my cheekbones. Why?
because you just listened to one of the worst female vocalists to ever grace us with her awfulness
if you mean nailed it to a cross and murdered it, then you're right.
waw dude why you so hateful, you need to get a grip..
Hateful people hate themselves.

There's a thing about this version--I love it. Elliott Smith is so incredibly hard to cover--this is pretty great.
Beautiful
Hauntingly beautiful.
Thank you Jessica

Yes. Inclusion is key
He did a fantastic job
that's Paul Defiglia
Bassists never get their due credit. That's why when my wife asked me why I don't learn bass along with guitar, I laughed at her.
@@andrewwabik5125 if your musical goal is to get credit and approval by others then maybe its a good thing you dont play bass.

Thanks for turning me on to those other covers. Hoping you knowing what those lyrics you love are about... and who (or what) the narrator is...
Drink up, baby, stay up all night
With the things you could do, you won't but you might
The potential you'll be that you'll never see
The promises you'll only make
Drink up with me now and forget all about
The pressure of days, do what I say
And I'll make you okay and drive them away
The images stuck in your head
People you've been before that you
Don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still
Drink up, baby, look at the stars
I'll kiss you again, between the bars
Where I'm seeing you there, with your hands in the air
Waiting to finally be caught
Drink up one more time and I'll make you mine
Keep you apart, deep in my heart
Separate from the rest, where I like you the best
And keep the things you forgot
People you've been before that you
Don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still
wonderful, thanks
Beautiful.
Incredible
oh my, goosebumps
Viví casi cinco años sin saber que existe una versión de una de mis canciones favoritas en voz de una de mis cantantes favoritas.
This song is my lulluby to my baby son
Those harmonies 😍

they sing so well together!
i love this
Fantastic
The best cover ever
so lisbeth salander is folk singer now?
I had the exact same thought....
No. Bob Dylan is.
So great!
...i love the original...but this one get´s me,too :)...he would be happy to hear !
Jessica's voice is so smooth, soothing & just simply divine.
This is very good.
A lot of artist have covered this song. Have to say this is probably the best.
With the thangggs. As an Aussie, that accent is so cute!
damn that cover was beautiful
I can hear Hope Sandoval singing this.
Brian B can't unhear. I think I would cry for hours
Love it.
Oh man, close to the original but with some really compelling adjustments. Beautiful voice. Thank you.
Her voice is fucking angelic omg
Brutal
Je savais bien que je la connaissais : j'écoutais ça au début où on a commencé à parler.
Just love it
at first, thought i hated it.. i mean, it's so much different, like my brain wanted to fight it almost haa. anyways by the end, it made more sense what was going on musically and that last verse and chorus hit me. ✌🏻 guys
I love her voice *-*
holy damn that sweet bass got me down
im in love
Where I like this version the best.
trop belle
I Love
Elliot Smith so much poetry so many hard ideas.
adorei o jeito que ela canta essa musica :)))
Ela adicionou leveza a música
@@hitalofelipe3974 leveza numa música que fala sobre abuso de álcool não é lá uma coisa legal.

+Benjamin Owen You might try all the other Elliott Smith songs.
omg.. or nick fucking drake, smog, townes van zandt
What tell me
Wow!
As a big Smith fan, I think he'd love this take on his music.
Will Smith?
The harmonies are everything.
The country-flavor of this cover suits this song suprisingly well
Me enamore
muuuy guapa y treeemenda voz
I love her tiny lisp on some of her voicings
Muito bom!
Paul Defiglia on upright bass, for those interested
#blessed necesitaba escuchar esta versión
Very Beutiful💘💘
Wow
I want her hair
Like this cover of ES so his music is still alive
pretty good cover
By far better than the original. Such lovely interpretation. ❤️
The beginning (0:13-0:55) partly reminds me Zombie from The Cranberries.
+tonyrulez69 Good call. Might have to listen to Cranberries now.
How does he get his guitar strings to curl up like that (down by the tuners)?
Pull at them while rubbing at them with a spoon (but only once all the strings are well adjusted to the guitar and tuned)
Her voice kills me. I'm done for.
no tiene cejas?
Jose Huelgas 😂😂😂
laughed my ass off at this comment
The timbre of her voice is reminiscent of Shelly Duvall singing in the Popeye film starring Robin Williams.
If elliott never moved out of austin ❤️❤️❤️
I really hated this cover when I first heard it. I stopped it half way through. But I came back to it because I couldn't get that twang out of my head.
Ameiiiiiiiiiiiiii
Where r her eyebrows
Beautiful vocal harmonies. I just find it a shame they're not using that killer chord change from the original on the chorus (on "don't want around anymore")...
what's the chord you are referring to?
@@treetopvideo they play Ab (don't) Bb (want) C (around anymore) when Elliot plays G/B (don't) Bb (want) F/A (around anymore) - that descending movement in the bass is just gorgeous
@@lebonze55 very cool thanks for typing it out. im gonna learn this tune and love that u shared this. i will accentuate that walk-down and enjoy it!
Great version. It’s missing the right chords in the chorus at the part where she sings “don’t want around anymore.”
Elliot created music with such emotion that he made all kinds of people relate to a song about being an alcoholic looser.
base
Not horrible but nothing is better than the original
It's a small detail but it really bugs me that they got the chords wrong in the chorus, I guess they either didn't notice or didn't care to find out what they were. It's still a really nice cover though.
Kinda changes the colour of the whole thing though, no? The chords here. Chorus seems way happier than it should be.
yup I think it would have def made it even better
Drink up baby I will take care of you at the end like I always do till the morning you won't remember anything and I won't be reminding you who left you behind L:)
I’m always down for a smith cover... but I think metric captured it better
Wtf it became a country song.
The only drawback of this song is that its too short.
