Mark Tyler, thanks for this little gem and may John, Gilly and Gizmo R.I.P. I consider myself lucky to have travelled with John on occasions when I was horse drawn. Evenings round the fire with a tot of whisky were fun and informative.
I grew up not far from where John lives. I remember a very similar fellow who lived at the top of Haldon Hill on the A38 called Smokey Joe. Long may there be the Johns and Smokeys in this world, it makes it a brighter place.
So glad that you took the time to interview this man and learn of his approach to life. I always beep and give him a hand gesture(the waving hand one)! :)
An enjoyable little video, I live a similar lifestyle in Latvia (even though I'm a Brit) three dogs, four goats (two about to give birth). It's a great life, wouldn't swap it for anything.
Totally randomly came across this interview but it was great! Pretty interesting dude. This world needs all types, he’s a friendly, intelligent guy not harming anybody. I see no wrong here.
I was just browsing and came across it randomly too ... I had this lifestyle for 9 months in the 1970's when I was a 'happy hippy'. My boyfriend and I just took off in our VW campervan and travelled across Europe and North Africa for 9 months. When we got back to the UK, it was the beginning of Summer and we still had money left so we went down to Cornwall for the whole Summer. Then it was time to knuckle down, earn some money and plan our next trip. Yes, I see where he's coming from. It's a great lifestyle.
He reminds me of a wee man that lives in a 'Bender' type dwelling near Balquidder. If in Perthshire look out for him wearing a plaid type kilt and a bodhran drum on his back. His name is Magi McGlynn and has some powerful poetry.
His accent is very interesting. It's like a modern Southeastern accent but with some striking differences. Here are a couple of things I noticed: 3:41 the "r" in "caravan" 4:22 the "oh" sound in "home" and "suppose"
Freedom. Freedom comes at a price, which to most will seem very expensive, but it's probably well worth it ultimately. Some people will know what I'm talking about here. Most won't though.
I do mate ,I lived in my motorhome for about three years full time and for about 18 years spent 6 months away ,now me and my wife are going full time again ,I'm 70 and my misses is67 I've also got an old timber boat that I spend time on , don't fancy sitting at home waiting for the end . We are both healthy at moment so life's for living and we're going to live it !!!
I read a lot of comments saying how much they admire his life. A romantic view i feel. His humility is charming, but British weather, no shower, no washing machine, living next to a road i doubt very much many of us would be able to handle it.
If you really want to stop you will I try allot of times but my heart wasn't in it snd had no respect for myself so self respect will get you there and believe in yourself something we all forget to do n Billy you keep ip the good work people like you are hard to find keep on keeping on keep on keeping strong
Like John..I took to the road at a young age..I also ran with the gaff (fairground) for a while). I moved around and carried little. I slept in barns, in the boot of an old abandoned taxi..by the way, that I discovered was breaking the law..I was prosecuted for that. Dad turned up at court..rd the judge I had a home. Outside the court I shouldered my rucksack..said my thanks and goodbye to dad..and off I went again. That was a long time ago now..I am now 71. I still get itchy feet. I now live In Bulgaria..a simple life near a lake. I could not tolerate the thought of working the same job for the rest of my life as was the practice then. I also did not want to live with my parents, dad was very critical and dominating. We were a large family and very poor. So in the end I just walked out and never went back...too live that is. I look back now an adventurous life. RIP...John.. a like minded spirit. I used to wonder how people could live with all the worries of a so called.. normal life. It seems to me that many live their lives from birth to death, in dept. Don't figure. I had few things to think a out..food, a place to sleep and keeping clean. Compare that too what many have to live with every single day. I k ow what freedom taste like...still do.
My mate had an old black cab outside his house and we found 4 homeless kids asleep in it . They had locked themselves in for security he went to get the key and was going to invite them in for some breakfast and a warm up as he had been homeless for a while but they all woke up and ran away as they most likely thought we would give them grief

What a great chat. That fellow asked John some excellent questions to learn about him, his history and his wisdom. Thank you

There are thousands of John Treagoods but most are younger than John. society usually calls them 'dirty hippies' and shouts 'NOT IN MY BACK YARD!'

That's freedom , f to the system ,good luck John !!!

Old John died a few days back,RIP.
Did he see his days out as he wished, on the road?
I hope so.
He had a kind face and eyes that obviously had stories behind them.
Beauty.
Home is where you park it.
May the angels guide you on your journey.
Brilliant!
Very Warm hearted and happy.

He was born in Kent and now lives in Devon,so it sounds half ‘cockney’,half Devon!
Can't see John posting on Facebook any time soon. Imagine how many likes he'd get if he posted anything. Book, Cover, Judge. Know what I mean.
If he lived in a house, the state would be living off him! Like it does everybody else. Let's get real here??
