I won't deny that some of the traditional scholar have said that this verse (4:34) is a proof as for the permissibility of striking one's spouse. Even in this case, those scholars have put the jurisprudencial limit on striking an other been. "daraba" can have a lot of figurative meaning, I just give you some, to show you that this doesn't necessarily mean to "strike" : "Daraba al-Ard" (ضرب الارض) means to set off in search of sustenance, the meaning here is cleatly not intended to litteraly "hit the ground" "Daraba as-Salam" (ضرب السلام) means here to salute, in a military manner, or else.
