When IU heard that they chose to cover this song, she was shocked, not just because the level of difficulty but also because she knew what it meant to the boys since she’s best friends with Jonghyun. Another reason why they wanted to do this cover was because the rest of the members thought that this song is the best one to showcase Onew’s incredible voice and wanted the whole world to know and hear about it. They even gave him more lines and brought up the key in the last verse higher than the original one. One thing about SHINee is that nobody loves them more than SHINee themselves, Shawols come closely in second place lol.

So the "Dear Name" they are talking about is Jonghyun. SHINee are known for their ballads and for their amazing harmonies, that is why they are so highly respected in the industry. Their live vocals are unmatched and everyone in the industry idolizes them for the amount of talent they have. Even as rookies they were highly respected by their seniors and peers for their live vocal abilities and the fact that they sound even better live then they do recorded. SHINee live are on a whole other level. They are some of the best vocalists in the industry. And just think, Minho is the main rapper of the group. How often do you see a rapper that can sing as well as him? Onew is also known for his ability to hold notes for a very long time. In the show, IU actually mentioned how Onew also was one of her favorite male voices and they even talked about how they should do a collaboration together. When you see the full interview, you will see that IU is a Shawol. On a side note: Because this show was filmed before SHINee's official comeback, Minho dyed his hair for the MV and then he dyed it back brown before their comeback, and then he re-dyed it red for their comeback activities. When it comes to Minho, he very rarely dyes his hair, anything other than brown, because he is constantly working on a new drama or movie and having crazy hair doesn't really work for most of the characters he plays. So on those rare occasions when he dyes his hair -- grey, blond or red, etc. -- he only keeps it that way for their short promotional period and you won't see it for very long.
About IU's Gloomy clock - If you watch Jonghyun's 2015 appearance on Sketchbook, he talks about it. He said he wrote the song for his own album. He only emailed it to IU to ask for advice on arranging it; however, she asked to buy it instead and of course Jonghyun was happy to do that. He did say he thought she made it better and that his version was somehow too gloomy.

What I meant to say was, IU's song "Gloomy Clock" -- one of her older songs -- was wrote by Jonghyun. Jonghyun and IU were really good friends, and when she heard "Gloomy Clock" she asked him to give it to her. Jonghyun always said that after hearing IU sing "Gloomy Clock" he knew the song was meant for her, and in hindsight he thinks he might have subconsciously wrote the song with her in mind.
On the same show, SHINee sang their new ballad "Kind" which is a special song dedicated to all the people around them who have always been so kind to them and supportive ---- SHAWOLs, staff, each other.
When SHINee debuted they were known as the Princes of Kpop, because they were so young and their sunbaes TVXQ and Super Junior were still in a high spot. Since you seem to like Onew’s voice, you might want to check ONEW’s NESSUN DORMA TOKYO DOME. He is not trained for opera but it’s his take on that famous piece, and he really did so well. I wanted to recommend more Shinee musics but they have sooooooo many good ones and I bet that you’ve had tons of recommendations already so I’ll hold off on that. But it was lovely reaction as always. Let’s cross our fingers for IU x Onew collab soon🤣
Thank you for a lovely reaction. All of the members of Shinee have fairly wide ranges. Onew has control over his whole range, and a warm and consistent tone. That’s unusual in a pop voice. Jonghyun had an extraordinarily emotive voice. Minho and Key are baritones. As Shinee tends to sing high, the prettiest parts of their voices haven’t been showcased as often as the pretty parts of Taemin’s or Jonghyun’s voices. (All of Onew’s voice is beautiful.)
Each of the members love each other so much you can hear it in their tone. How in sync they are despite sounding different. They want to sing together. They give Onew more parts (not just in this song) and make sure Taemin can shine too.
My co-Shawols already have many recommendations for future reactions, so I just want to thank you for making this journey in appreciating this legendary group that is so dear to our hearts. And even though it might be hard, I appreciate you showing interest and replying to each comment.
IU was close to Jonghyun, and Dear Name was a goodbye song which she sang in his tribute before. So them choosing to do it on her show... yeah. That sad pout at the end of Onew's last note? She's probably there in memory. Fyi, Before they sang, she went through how she knew each of them, without mentioning Jjong.

Since you read our comments so diligently, a guide might seem redundant by now. But, if nothing else, it might introduce you to Jonghyun in context and if you think shinee in 4 part harmony is amazing, wait til you discover Shinee in their original 5 part harmony formats. 1 reason why Onew seems effortless in his singing is because he used to be the stable high note and Jonghyun was the vocal acrobat. They're both main vocal class though. Anyway, now that he's gone, Taemin and Key have stepped up as well to do the crazy flexing while Onew does the soaring power vocals

If you watch the interview, when right before they starting sing "Dear Name", when IU was leading them in, Onew was looking up to the sky.....looking at Jjong.
So many things were already said by my fellow and senior shawols because I only heard about SHINee about few months ago. This song was obviously meaningful to them, and pay attention to what Onew did at the very beginning: he looked up before he sang, twice. He always does it for Jonghyun. The five of them are incredibly tight, and Key said that there is not a single day they don't think about him, that promoting this new album made the space left by Jonghyun still as big as ever. We all felt somehow that they meant every single word they sang.
he also did that during interview at one of the music shows this comeback. he said "I want to say 'I love you' to my members" and then looked each of them in the eyes and said "I love you", the last "I love you" he looked up while saying it.
IU said Onew was her ideal voice. he is able to hit high notes effortlessly and still create an impact. Onew has the skills to hold a note for 40 seconds! Do a shinee guide instead of replay, you will get to know the boys first and explore deeper into the world of shinee.
In order to show u more versatility, ‘1 of 1’ is a great one. It’s a new jack swing style, 90’s concept even down to the set, editing, clothing, and dancing. Learned about Taemin when saw videos of him and Jimin being on a group with Kai. Then I watched more of Taemin’s video without Jimin, saw Shinee’s peformances. Thennn was in awe with their vocals..all of them. Thennnnnn realized Onew’s vocals. Now, im hooked and Onew’s my bias and Taemin my bias wrecker. Damnnn they’re all so good singers!!!! Please listen to Selena and their first album is ughhh for me the best. It has this r&b vibe.
You should really check out SHINee’s Our Page MV. The whole song is their tribute to Jonghyun and it’s even more meaningful, since they wrote the lyrics themselves (I would really check the lyrics first). Thank you for another great reaction.
If you go on Vlive Onew has two voice only Vlive's and it is literal ASMR. His voice is so soothing and calming that whenever I have trouble getting to sleep all I have to do is turn on one of those Vlive's and I am out in a matter of minutes. He also has a mini solo album if you want to check it out called Voice, he released it right before he enlisted so he didn't really get to promote it as much as Shawols would have liked but all well. The main track on it is called "Blue" and it is so heart wrenchingly beautiful. All the boys have a solo album out except for Minho as he is more focused on his acting than getting solo music out. Otherwise the other four all have music out. Edit: Also going forward, any really, really low singing that you hear in SHINee songs is from Minho. That man I swear just needs to sing in his lower register and my ovaries pop up to say hello. His voice...gives me the shivers.

The camera cut off at 40 seconds. Apparently he went on to add a bit more flourish at the end like what he did here, and the camera cut which was why the video looked oddly stable throughout without the finish

I think it's about time you girls watch the Very Shinee guides and go down the rabbit hole. Join us! Onew is something else/ I literally heard him sing and I was a fan. If a voice can heal, it's his. It the most relaxing thing ever. You can hear blue from his solo or the Rainy blue cover he did with Taemin on piano (The dancer dude) But he really upped a bunch of levels recently. he is stunning. I'm glad they gave him more lines. He did a stream when he was singing for like 15 minutes, mostly whatever people in the stream requested, and I watch it often to relax.

It's lovely how you mentioned their range. They are all strong and versatile vocalists who can sing in various styles and vocal registers, yet what I love about them is that they would always sing to highlight the song or the multi-part harmony rather then their "individual" voice. You might be surprised that although Minho usually sings the lower register, he has a clean falsetto (check out Sing Your Song), and can hit high belted notes (he does so jokingly, mimicking Jonghyun's "new bridge" in Excuse Me , Miss. You may also want to listen to the live version of From Now On, although that one may be hard to watch as it's very emotional).
IU mentioned in the episode that Onew is actually her favorite male vocalist. Onew was shocked and it was so adorable. That man doesn't realize how amazingly talented he is! Also, Jonghyun was the main vocalist so just wait till you hear his vocals and how he harmonizes with the rest of the group!!! So good.

In the beginning of your reaction, you mentioned about ost. SHINEE has one iconic ost debut song "stand by me" from the iconic kdrama "boys over flowers" Actually only onew, jonghyun and key, three of them sang this song. However, this song brings lots of kpop and kdrama fans so much good memories. And there are also other famous ost songs such as Green Rain(The Queen's classroom) and fly high(Prosecutor Princess)
thank you soooo much for this reaction~ as I mentioned in previous comments, I don't know why even after so many time listening to Shinee's cover version of this song, its just like, it hit straight to my heart, and I will end up in tears~ their bond in group are extremely tied~ just like what others said, they're each other's no.1 fans and very supportive to each other. If before this, everyone knows that IU and Jonghyun is a very close friends, but now not only all members of Shinee will be IU's close friend but the fandom also will keep supporting and cheering each other and be a big family (Shawol & UENA). Oh and Onew once held a note for over 40 seconds just because. He has done some amazing collabs. This song was one of IU's but the lyrics certainly bring up thoughts of our angel Jonghyun. Even from the first couple of lines, ALL of us thought of Jonghyun. Our Jjongie was a truly wonderful and amazing person who had sooo much talent. He is widely regarded as the best vocalist in kpop, he was truly THAT good. As aperson, he was so kind and loving, he was also a total crackhead who loved making people laugh. Jonghyun was Taemin's biggest fan too, he adored him and doted on him so much. He helped teach Taemin to sing the way that he can now, he cheered him on so much, Jjongie even rescheduled his own solo concert just so he could attend Taemin's. Since Taemin was so young when they first came out, many Shawols say they are Taemin's mom, Jonghyun said "Remember, I was Taemin's mom first" lmfao. He was such a beautiful person and SUPER attractive too ugh. I was sad right from the beginning with those first two lines but it was Taemin's singing that made the tears appear. All 4 of these men sing so beautifully. They are all so amazing. Something about the way Taemin sang that though... He made me crack.
Rewatching this video! Gosh, 3 months ago i was as clueless as you about Shinee and here we are binging on every content they have online (hello, Taemin's day binge yesterday! Lol)
These guys made a big difference in kpop not only because of their music but because they came back after their loss ,not showing fearless but by showing their emotions. Lately they started talking more freely about their emotions about Jonghyun,which is a taboo in Korea until now. After love yourself movement from BTS which aimed against bullying, gender discrimination and a bit of mental illness (and many more)they came and gave to depression and loss a face. They fought ,showing their sorrow and their fear ,which is a breakthrough. In a country where hiding is the norm they show up and they console and help with their actions all those who experienced such a loss

In all of their concert they mentioned him and they even did a whole concert just dedicated to Jonghyun and to honor him. Bts and their movements has nothing to do with this and Jonghyun is not a taboo in Korea. SHINee always said they are 5 and they never forget to mention Jonghyun. Its just that in public television shows its harder to talk about him because key said that people tried to use their stories and tried to make the members cry by mentioning him thats why the members find it easier to talk about Jonghyun in front of their fans like in their concerts and fan meetings . The concept of IU's Palette programme is for her and her guests to sing each other's songs. In this ep, IU sang SHINee's Sherlock. The members shared that they gave Onew more lines cos they felt his voice needed to be showcased more and that it suited the song. IU also said that she couldn't look at them while they were singing.

It will help you to get to know SHINee better and to learn a little more about IU. This interview will help you to understand why SHINee are so highly respected by their peers and what it was like in the early days for SHINee, etc.
As you may know, IU is a solo artist who debuted 4 months after SHINee, who is known as "the nation's little sister." She is known for her amazing vocal range and for her cute bubbly personality. She is also one of Korea's top actresses -- she has even acted in a drama with Minho. And she has had collaborations with Key and Taemin already. In the show, IU actually mentioned how Onew also was one of her favorite male voices and they even talked about how they should do a collaboration together.
Fun fact: IU's song "Gloomy Clock" -- one of her older songs -- was wrote by Jonghyun and he specifically wrote it with her in mind as the singer. SHINee and IU go way back. When you see the full interview, you will see that IU is a Shawol.
On a side note: Because this show was filmed before SHINee's official comeback, Minho dyed his hair for the MV and then he dyed it back brown before their comeback, and then he re-dyed it red for their comeback activities. When it comes to Minho, he very rarely dyes his hair, anything other than brown, because he is constantly working on a new drama or movie and having crazy hair doesn't really work for most of the characters he plays. So on those rare occasions when he dyes his hair -- grey, blond or red, etc. -- he only keeps it that way for their short promotional period and you won't see it for very long.

About IU's Gloomy clock - If you watch Jonghyun's 2015 appearance on Sketchbook, he talks about it. He said he wrote the song for his own album. He only emailed it to IU to ask for advice on arranging it; however, she asked to buy it instead and of course Jonghyun was happy to do that. He did say he thought she made it better and that his version was somehow too gloomy.

What I meant to say was, IU's song "Gloomy Clock" -- one of her older songs -- was wrote by Jonghyun. Jonghyun and IU were really good friends, and when she heard "Gloomy Clock" she asked him to give it to her. Jonghyun always said that after hearing IU sing "Gloomy Clock" he knew the song was meant for her, and in hindsight he thinks he might have subconsciously wrote the song with her in mind.
On the same show, SHINee sang their new ballad "Kind" which is a special song dedicated to all the people around them who have always been so kind to them and supportive ---- SHAWOLs, staff, each other.

All of the members of Shinee have fairly wide ranges. Onew has control over his whole range, and a warm and consistent tone. That’s unusual in a pop voice. Jonghyun had an extraordinarily emotive voice. Minho and Key are baritones. As Shinee tends to sing high, the prettiest parts of their voices haven’t been showcased as often as the pretty parts of Taemin’s or Jonghyun’s voices. (All of Onew’s voice is beautiful.)

But, if nothing else, it might introduce you to Jonghyun in context and if you think shinee in 4 part harmony is amazing, wait til you discover Shinee in their original 5 part harmony formats.
1 reason why Onew seems effortless in his singing is because he used to be the stable high note and Jonghyun was the vocal acrobat. They're both main vocal class though. Anyway, now that he's gone, Taemin and Key have stepped up as well to do the crazy flexing while Onew does the soaring power vocals

So many things were already said by my fellow and senior shawols because I only heard about SHINee about few months ago. This song was obviously meaningful to them, and pay attention to what Onew did at the very beginning: he looked up before he sang, twice. He always does it for Jonghyun. The five of them are incredibly tight, and Key said that there is not a single day they don't think about him, that promoting this new album made the space left by Jonghyun still as big as ever. We all felt somehow that they meant every single word they sang.
He did look up a lot. I’m going to watch it again and focus on their expressions
he also did that during interview at one of the music shows this comeback. he said "I want to say 'I love you' to my members" and then looked each of them in the eyes and said "I love you", the last "I love you" he looked up while saying it.

Learned about Taemin when saw videos of him and Jimin being on a group with Kai. Then I watched more of Taemin’s video without Jimin, saw Shinee’s peformances. Thennn was in awe with their vocals..all of them. Thennnnnn realized Onew’s vocals. Now, im hooked and Onew’s my bias and Taemin my bias wrecker. Damnnn they’re all so good singers!!!! Please listen to Selena and their first album is ughhh for me the best. It has this r&b vibe.
You should really check out SHINee’s Our Page MV. The whole song is their tribute to Jonghyun and it’s even more meaningful, since they wrote the lyrics themselves (I would really check the lyrics first). Thank you for another great reaction.

IU admitted to Onew that he's her favorite singer and if she was a guy she would want to have his voice
If you go on Vlive Onew has two voice only Vlive's and it is literal ASMR. His voice is so soothing and calming that whenever I have trouble getting to sleep all I have to do is turn on one of those Vlive's and I am out in a matter of minutes. He also has a mini solo album if you want to check it out called Voice, he released it right before he enlisted so he didn't really get to promote it as much as Shawols would have liked but all well. The main track on it is called "Blue" and it is so heart wrenchingly beautiful. All the boys have a solo album out except for Minho as he is more focused on his acting than getting solo music out. Otherwise the other four all have music out.
Edit: Also going forward, any really, really low singing that you hear in SHINee songs is from Minho. That man I swear just needs to sing in his lower register and my ovaries pop up to say hello. His voice...gives me the shivers.

The camera cut off at 40 seconds. Apparently he went on to add a bit more flourish at the end like what he did here, and the camera cut which was why the video looked oddly stable throughout without the finish

Onew is something else/ I literally heard him sing and I was a fan.
If a voice can heal, it's his. It the most relaxing thing ever.
You can hear blue from his solo or the Rainy blue cover he did with Taemin on piano (The dancer dude)
But he really upped a bunch of levels recently. he is stunning. I'm glad they gave him more lines.
He did a stream when he was singing for like 15 minutes, mostly whatever people in the stream requested, and I watch it often to relax.

It's lovely how you mentioned their range. They are all strong and versatile vocalists who can sing in various styles and vocal registers, yet what I love about them is that they would always sing to highlight the song or the multi-part harmony rather then their "individual" voice. You might be surprised that although Minho usually sings the lower register, he has a clean falsetto (check out Sing Your Song), and can hit high belted notes (he does so jokingly, mimicking Jonghyun's "new bridge" in Excuse Me , Miss. You may also want to listen to the live version of From Now On, although that one may be hard to watch as it's very emotional).

thank you soooo much for this reaction~ as I mentioned in previous comments, I don't know why even after so many time listening to Shinee's cover version of this song, its just like, it hit straight to my heart, and I will end up in tears~ their bond in group are extremely tied~ just like what others said, they're each other's no.1 fans and very supportive to each other. If before this, everyone knows that IU and Jonghyun is a very close friends, but now not only all members of Shinee will be IU's close friend but the fandom also will keep supporting and cheering each other and be a big family (Shawol & UENA). Even from the first couple of lines, ALL of us thought of Jonghyun. Our Jjongie was a truly wonderful and amazing person who had sooo much talent. He is widely regarded as the best vocalist in kpop, he was truly THAT good. As aperson, he was so kind and loving, he was also a total crackhead who loved making people laugh. Jonghyun was Taemin's biggest fan too, he adored him and doted on him so much. He helped teach Taemin to sing the way that he can now, he cheered him on so much, Jjongie even rescheduled his own solo concert just so he could attend Taemin's. Since Taemin was so young when they first came out, many Shawols say they are Taemin's mom, Jonghyun said "Remember, I was Taemin's mom first" lmfao. He was such a beautiful person and SUPER attractive too ugh. I was sad right from the beginning with those first two lines but it was Taemin's singing that made the tears appear. All 4 of these men sing so beautifully. They are all so amazing. Something about the way Taemin sang that though... He made me crack.

These guys made a big difference in kpop not only because of their music but because they came back after their loss ,not showing fearless but by showing their emotions. Lately they started talking more freely about their emotions about Jonghyun,which is a taboo in Korea until now. After love yourself movement from BTS which aimed against bullying, gender discrimination and a bit of mental illness (and many more)they came and gave to depression and loss a face. They fought ,showing their sorrow and their fear ,which is a breakthrough. In a country where hiding is the norm they show up and they console and help with their actions all those who experienced such a loss

The concept of IU's Palette programme is for her and her guests to sing each other's songs. In this ep, IU sang SHINee's Sherlock. The members shared that they gave Onew more lines cos they felt his voice needed to be showcased more and that it suited the song. IU also said that she couldn't look at them while they were singing.
