    He wrote it himself. Because of personal experience. This song is about the breakup of a marriage, and the heartache resulting from that

    Mehram is a uni-gender Islamic term, used for both men and women. Its accurate translation is "Not stranger". Na-Mehram means stranger. So for a woman and man, Mehram could be their blood relatives. However, only a spouse is a special person who is not a blood relative but still a Mehram.
    In Islam, it is strictly forbidden for divorced people to remarry. Once divorced they are forever Na-Mehram.

  • @JustAPakistaniGamer
    @JustAPakistaniGamer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    so right off the bat, one thing i'd like to say ( this is going to be a long one ) you can't grasp the full gravity and meaning of this song without understanding the concept of the central word of this song "Mehram" The concept of Mehram ties deeply into the concept of Niqaab ( the full body veil ) in islam as well.
    Let me unpack this.
    Men and women don't meet and date in pakistani culture which is primarily islamic culture considering that Pakistan is currently known as "The Islamic Republic of Pakistan" (Didn't always used to named that but that's a whole different history lesson)
    So the first time you see a girl or a guy other the men and women of your family is when you marry a girl or a guy... you see your spouse first time literally on the day of your marriage ( that's how it used to be ) so it was sort of a kinder surprise sort of thing but instead of a toy from inside a chocolate egg you would go into your bedroom and unveil your life partner on your marriage bed... Literally... as the bride was (in the past) seated on the bed wearing a veil over her face.
    Modern times it's different now obviously ( we're not backward people now ) for the most part. But the old hangups are still prevalent, which is why women only present themselves without full body covering in front of their "Mehram".. Mehram being anyone they are legally allowed to present their face to and wear normal housewear in front of, and that includes father, brother and later in life Husband for a woman.
    Even in front of extended cousins ( which is generally the marriage pool for men and women ) you don't see anyone's face or see them wearing their normal house clothes, everyone usually wears veils even among extended family.
    To wear niqaab - the full body covering when present in front of people who are not mehram is called Purdah.. Purdah is ac ommon practice to the extent that even during marriages there's seperate seating for women and men even now in most wedding functions that happen within the country. However, people who have now been exposed to more western ideals now have mixed wedding gatherings and obviously veil a.k.a "Purdah" is not as common in households that are more aligned with western viewpoints. however more traditional pakistanis still follow the customs of their forebears ( a mater of great friction within the country )
    THe song is about a girl and a guy who are singing about not being each other's mehram anymore... The song is about divorce... and it goes hard... because !!! if you are divorced in islam... you can't remarry that person.
    let me contextualize this further.
    Your husband or wife is your first, literally the first human you kiss romantically and have a physical relationship with, that creates a deep and lasting bond no matter who you are. Even people in the west would agree that you don't forget your "First" and there's all this hooplah about making it memorable and such. But imagine your first being the person you are destined to spend your life with.
    Those raging hormones of youth, and exploring another human being physically, developing that bond and losing it with divorce.
    Now when you divorce someone in lslam, they immediatetly become Na-Mehram or Non Mehram.. basically you are cut off from that human being.. No talking, no meeting each other for coffee and catching up, they aren't a part of your life anymore. Just gone.... And depending on what flavor of islam you belong to, you can't directly a woman ( specifically only for women ) unless that woman marries someone else, consummates that marriage and then divorces that person ( this is the controversial concept of Nikkah Halala) although the song doesn't directly allude to it in any way it alude to the difficulty of remarriage and how you have to navigate these issues if you are a muslim and a pakistani.
    Even if that person becomes your Mehram again, it won't ever be the same...
    So yeah.... This song is all about regret and pain and regret and then some more regret... which is why it makes you cry even if you can't understand the language...
    The reason for that is the URDU language is a very visceral language and URDU music is nor just reciting words, but deeply knowing the meaning of what you are trying to say when you are singing it and using your voice to convey your emotional pain and trauma ( if it's a traumatic song ) with your voice as your instrument. It's akin to method acting in a way if you want to really understand it
    sorry for the long explanation, but with what you know now, listen to the song again, listen to their voice, the emotions in that voice, their body language when they deliver those words and how they interact when they are in front of each other later in the song. The stiffness in the body language, the pain in the voice, the communication of regret.
    Thanks for reading if you did... hope i was able to elevate this brilliant piece of music for you a bit further

    No word in the English language can translate the sublimity of the urdu word *“Mahram”.* It literally means those people from whom you dont have to do purdah (veil) according to the Islamic religion. So if your Beloved is not with you (in marriage) he/she is now a *“Gair-Mahram”* (Non-Mahram) to you.
