    I have seen a lot of your videos and I must say that I like the way how you SHARE your knowledge about bushcrafting. While others tend to lecture and impresses upon the viewers how EXPERTS they are and how they have mastered the craft......with you, you just share what you know and just enjoy the outdoors. Great video.

    My grandfather, who was born in the 1880s, taught me to make it slightly differently. The key is using a medium to coarse grind coffee the kind that used to be done in a hand grinder and you use one teaspoon to one tablespoon of coffee per cup of water and as soon as the water boils you put the coffee in take the water off the fire and let it set for 5 minutes close to the Heat but not boiling then you put your cold water in to settle the grounds it also works best with some egg shell put in the coffee. The problem with boiling the coffee is it scorches it so it doesn't taste as good. That was done, according to my grandfather, when you are running out of coffee and you had to use old grounds with some new grounds to stretch it out.

      Thanks for sharing this nice story about coffee and how to make it. I’ve found out that making “cowboy coffee “ is very individual and the preferred taste is very personal. 👍🏻🐶😊

  • @88woodbikes

    Not necessary to boil cowboy coffee. Bring water to near boil. Add fine grind if possible, stir once only, wait 5-7 minutes, wipe any grounds from mouth area of vessel , test for no floaters, if clear, drink slowly and enjoy. Easy, no boiled over coffee no cold water. That's how I do it. Enjoying your videos, thanks.

    I really enjoy your videos. A suggestion for your cowboy coffee is to get the water to a boil then take off the heat and add fine grind coffee. Stir and let sit for 2 minutes, stir again and wait another 2 minutes. It will still be very hot and delicious. I have tried a few methods and find this to be the best for me. And of course the whiskey.

    I love your simple fire and coffee videos the most. I saw the problem with boiling over the coffee. I've used the solo stive lite many times. I've had to learn to not put so much wood in the stove. Just a couple of sticks the size of your finger at a time. Yes you have to feed it more often but you don't burn food or boil over nearly as often. Another excellent video though. Keep them coming please

    Your vids are very enjoyable Tom! And you don’t let failures out, not only in this one with the coffee. I remember i scene you accidently put a little spruce on fire, as a warning how fast it can get a flame. Not letting this out was also very good. The quality of filming and sound increased over time but i also like the videos of less professional quality because you take us along in your journey getting better and better and with some fine skills, very creative and practical. 60K well earned and it will be a lot more!

    I think matches are actually the highest form of firemaking technology. That is of course not chemical or electrically driven. Ferro rods in some ways are a step backwards but very fun. Who doesn't like a spark shower? But they last a very long time. Matches and ferro rods should always be carried and a lighter also because they are much more guaranteed. I think older cultures would have been very happy with matches and gladly ditched their flint and steels.

    • @cimbrerbushcraft-vikingheritag
      @cimbrerbushcraft-vikingheritag  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your absolute right about the matches, lighter and ferro rods … it’s more reliable and safe to use 👍🏻😁 But !! ☝🏻 the challenge in using the flint and steel … is for me … the most satisfying way to make fires 🔥. And it’s a little bit funny 😁 because in the last couple of days I’ve been thinking about that issue … and have decided that I’m going to use my flint and steel as much as I can, and try different materials to improve my skills 😊👌🏻

    Best coffee ,what I do with my thermos jug is I put the coffee in it and boil the water on the side and when the water has boiled, I fill the jug and put the lid on and wait some five minutes and non of it is spilled, like boiling a milk soup, or trying to make fudge or toffee, I only succeeded in making a sugar cake as hard as rock that wouldn't even dissolve in water, I broke half my toot trying to bite in it and the other half in fights and telling lies..✨

    I told Owen he should try to catch a bison calf alive, I'm very fond of oxen, I said they had never seen any of these in Denmark, They make wonderful companions when they are young but they can get very big. When I said that I saw his blue eyes shine with sparks, and I think he will try to do that, a friend of mine here by the lake I was talking to you about , her grand-father a pure blooded native used to harness his pet moose to a sleigh as you would do with a reindeer, moose are huge , I saw on a video that they still have aurocks gnu in swiss alps, . and yacks are my favorite, , they can travel Himalayan trails and know their way, some folks in U.S. have imported some from Nepal,.. Bison was believed extinct yet made a come back and I wonder about the boeuf musqué in the arctic, I'll do a research on that right away ✨

    I know six ways of starting a friction fire, but of those I know, only two, the fire plow and the hand drill, can be done without cordage, or any other manmade material. . A hand drill is easier of you can use a thumb tie because this stops your hands from sliding down the spindle every few seconds.
    This also means these two are the easiest ways to start a fire if you have no knife.
    I'm not at all fond of magnifying glasses that are as small as the one in the Hudson Bay lid. It's isn't the magnifying power that lights a fire, it's how much light is concentrated at the focal point. The wider the lens, the more light, meaning the more energy, you get at the focal point, and the easier it is to start a fire. A lens two inches in diameter brings four times as much light/energy/heat to the focal point than a once inch lens, and this makes it far easier to start a fire, especially under averse conditions.
    And all things being equal, a Fresnel lens is much more efficient than a regular magnifying lens because it is thin and flat, and ones designed to start fires are also specifically designed to bring all the light to a pinpoint focus.
    In short, magnifying lenses are designed for image quality, and Fresnel lenses are designed for focal quality over a short distance. A Fresnel lens can also do a much better job of focusing oblique light, which adds energy to the focal point.
    Anyway, the wider the lens, the easier it will start a fire. Combine a wide lens with a pinpoint focus, and starting a fire is so easy it can become your fire starter of choice most of the year.
    As for Cowboy Coffee, we take it off the fire as soon as it starts to boil. Boiling water turns coffee bitter, and the best best restaurants that make the best coffee never allow the water to boil at all. Right below boiling makes the best coffee, so the moment Cowboy Coffee starts to boil, bet it off the fire, drop a bit of cold water to settle the grounds, and you're good to go.
    If you do want the water to boil, it should never boil more than a minute, tops. Around here, though, we stop as soon as the water boils, and I love coffee made this way, but up to a one minute boil also makes good coffee. After that, all you're doing is burning the coffee, and imparting more and more bitterness. Coffee produces natural sugars, if you don't boil it all out.
    Anyway, I recon it's real cowboy coffee because real cowboys chuck wagon cooks have been doing it this way for a hundred and fifty years or more.

      Hi James. Thanks for your comment with all that info about fire starting 👍🏻 It’s sounds like you know what you are talking about 😉
      Regarding the cowboy coffee. I found the info about boiling it on several TH-cam videos … this is the most popular and shown: th-cam.com/video/tq7Si7cp2jM/w-d-xo.html … where Kent Rollins says it should boil 2-3 min. And that it’s the boiling that takes the acid out of the coffee ?? But I’m going to try it again and then boiling it a short time … 2-3 min max. 😝
      Thanks again for your interest and comment on my channel.

    One of the few cons of the solo stove , but still a great durable stove.

      Hi Clinton. First … thanks to you for your support and comment 👍🏻 When I began to explore the market for twig stoves I saw a video where the person said that the Titan was the best choice … because the combustion camber is bigger than in the smaller one. And I think he was right 🙏🏻 you don’t have to fill it all the time with twigs and small branches
      That gives me … I think … more time to do other things
      Ex preparing food and so on.
      I love the Titan and I’m glad I chose that one. Hope this was an answer you can use 👌🏻🤗

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not at all fond of the fire piston. It works, but is very, very difficult to do with natural materials, so I don't have a use for it.
      As for shoe laces, that lets me out, too. I wear pull on boots in the winter, and moccasins in the summer. But natural cordage is very easy to make, if you practice a while. Like most things, it seems difficult at first, but it takes very little practice to make it easily.
      But a hand drill is both easier and faster, if you learn how to make and use one correctly. Anyone who has practiced enough can start a hand drill fire before someone else can even make a bow drill set. Usually a lot faster.

    As you will see in that video about Intuits is that in Canada they divided the arctic in 2, Nunavik that is Nouveau Québec and is under our provincial jurisdiction, mainly in Inuit Cree and French expression and Nunavut, that is west of Hudson bay that is under jurisdiction of Canadian government and preferred language is English, Inuit is spoken amongst themselves . The oxen I was talking about are catching a parasite and they would need vetenarian care, it's a parasite that came with the climate change and make the ox sick and they wouldn't eat the meat, some years ago we lost a wonderful dog to heart worms, more parasites infect some fish and we don't eat them when we see a yellow stain in the flesh that is a worm that can be transferred to seagulls and so on...Hope someone finds the right formula to flush these worms out of the organism, garlic is good an pepper, yet it takes a special formula that vetenarians keep to fight worms, MY SECOND JUG OF COFFEE IS STARTING ME UP AGAIN....✨🎡🐱‍🐉

    And I was also a back up on the beach early morning surveillance, during Vietnam war in Dania beach Florida with my trainer in diving with the U.S. Marine corps, I had to watch the beach in early morning and signal fins manowar, that is a blue gelly fish that burns your skin like battery acid, lotion calamine, pink lotion is best for first aid there, fins were sharks or could be friendly porpoise or worse barracuda, anyway he was gone into the ocean with 2 tanks and a spear gun and if anything went wrong I could signal it to him and him had to inspect the dept. for sonar radars, submarines and thing and I if any thing happened to him he would pull the line and I would have to do my best to pull on that line and pull him out of the ocean and all that in very early morning before the life guards COME TO THE BEACH AND IF EVERTHINGS OK THE BEACH CAN OPEN. Worse were the Manowar, , when there was a manowar alert we would close the beach posting signs MANOWAR and you would need that pink calamine lotion to save the skin in contact with it, we always carry it in our first aid kit as it soothes hornet stings and poison ivy exposure and any hyper acid attack on the skin✨

    it wasn't always such heroïc deeds, most of the time they would complain about this and that and start a war against the natives, and I will tell you the truth, the way newspaper men and governments went in those days is that when the 7th cavalry with General pale face Custer was defeated with almost all the7th cavalry, they called it a massacre, yet each time they came to settlements and killed men women and children, They called that victory, and I'm a witness to that and I made an agreement with the nations that if they were attacked I would do my best to defend them and so they did, in lake George N,Y. a frontier town long since abandoned. in the land of the lasts of the Mohicans. you see my task is to join north south east west in perfect harmony AND LIFE GOES ON... i'M THE ONLY MAN ALIVE TODAY WHO CROSSED THE mOHAVE DESERT AND FOUGHT HIS WAY THROUGH KICKING ASSES AND HURTING THEM BAD YET ALWAYS LEAVING THEM ALIVE FOR THE GOOD LORD TO DECIDE..I'm bluffing a bit👌

    Any large stone you hit with a chain or an iron tool will make sparks, yet if the weather is damp, you need to keep it all dry, I started campfires under the pouring rain with the help of a simple candle. pouring melting wax on my amadou and sheltering it with my hat I would start a campfire under the rain and folks around would come and wonder how I did and we would sing songs and slowly dry our clothes , I lit a fire tonight, and I burned plastic, I know it's not good for the air yet it's even worse for nature when they pile it in a dump or drop it in the ocean...
