The Amazon Rainforest | Travel Vlog | Ecuador Series, ep. 5

- Today we set off from our ecolodge to explore more of the Amazon. We head about an hour down the Cuyabeno River to visit a village called Siona Tarabeaya where we learn about one of the indigenous communities. On our way there we pull our canoe ashore to take an amazing walk in the jungle where we see a very old and unique tree.
At the village we learn a bit of the language, taste some of the local fruits and veg’, and help harvest the yuca that we’ll use to make yuca bread. We’re joined by the village Shaman and we learn about traditional medicine, try an alcoholic medicinal beverage, some aromatherapy, and Andie even offers herself up for a treatment!
Only 2% of the Amazon Jungle is in Ecuador, and part of that is in the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, which is where we visited during our Ecuador trip. It was our first visit to the world's largest rainforest, and we already can't wait to go back and see more!
This is the fifth video in our first-ever international series! #Quito, Ecuador was the first international trip we took together back in 2011. Eleven years later, it’s where we filmed our first international series and first drone footage for our channel!
We spent two weeks in Ecuador this time, including Quito, day-trips to Mindo and Cotopaxi National Park, the #Amazon, and one of our top-3 bucket list destinations: the Galápagos Islands!

Tea flavored juice sounds interesting! Always a good day when you see dolphins. Be careful Stephen. Nice bracelets. Andie that was a brave move to get the natural remedy! Yea, that's why we don't do tour things or stay in hostel like situations. If we do nature, we just take a cab out to the park or nature area and explore on our own. Always less people around that way and we can go at our own pace.
it was just juice. I can’t remember what kind now. but he was the only who tasted tea. 😅 unfortunately you can’t really do this part of the jungle on your own, and these types of lodges are the only places to stay in the Cuyabeno region (the more affordable of the 2 Ecuadorian Amazon areas). hopefully one day we’ll get to do a more independent rainforest visit, maybe in Brazil or Peru or Colombia.
HECK NO: leeches! That is why you have to wear those tall Wellies!

I was so excited about the dolphins! Have wanted to see one ever since I first heard of river dolphins about 11 years ago (during our first trip to Ecuador).

So cool! Loved everything. Definitely can empathize on chatty/loud people when you just want peace & quiet. Such a bummer there couldn’t be designated spaces for hanging out snd talking and a place for peace & quiet besides your room. I wouldn’t say anything, but might plan in the future to seek out locations that have more options. So frustrating. Such an amazing trip. Thanks for sharing it!!
there actually was a more appropriate area where they could talk, in the common room/building. but they wanted to be on the hammocks by the water, too, I guess. 🤷🏻♀️
Wow what an incredible lodge. You guys are really in the thick of it. Juice tea. Wow what a tree! And dang... those are some nettles. And unfortunate on the neighbors. I would feel the same way.

WOW, that was an amazing video. Love yuca root, I did not know that other places ate yuca bread, I grew up eating it in the DR. yummy. I understand why you were annoyed by people talking and not listening to the sounds of nature. One thing I noticed, no pensionados, only young folks.

Here I am on a dreary Thursday morning in wales, hanging out in the Amazon with you two! Loved it. Your lodge looked so beautiful. We loved the boat trip -‘d river dolphins so cool. The Yukka bread looked fun to make, but you can have the slice with Stephen’s finger in!! We’re totally with you on people who spoil the peace. Wills is often audio recording, so a good tactic we find is the set up the recorder close to the offender, they then ask what it is and what you’re doing and we tell them and also say we need 3 mins of silence to capture the sounds - not always ideal but it usually gets us three minutes!! I take seeing a sloth over a snake anyway. Great video guys. Loved it 🍻
And I forgot the burning question. Most important. Did getting slapped by stinging nettles fix your tendinitis!!
lol! sadly no - the tendinitis persists. I gotta say, something about a “dreary morning in Wales” sounds kind of lovely to me. I wouldn’t mind experiencing that one day. Setting up the recorder near the gabber is kinda genius! Gonna try that next time.

If people talk in the jungle--or make any noise at all--they'll experience less wildlife. If you have an understanding guide, he/she could ask the visitors to stay silent anytime they or others are looking or listening, or just enjoying nature. Best if done on arrival...but the guides and lodge owners should already have that as part of the agenda.
Really good point! I may whisper that suggestion to guides on our future tours. Put it on them to moderate.
Wow, that was fascinating. Patti was like, "oh, wow, that bread looks delish." Yeah, I found the tour through the village really, really, interesting! SNAKE!! 😅"I think he's sleeping, or, maybe she, IDK" Hilarious! Yeah, the talking thing, my first thought was, could YOU move? You know our mantra, no screaming kids, no barking dogs, no humans 😆BUT, sometimes you can't help but be with people, and especially in some far away land like Ecuador, I would feel safer being around other people. Don't say anything, unless they were being REALLY rude, cussing, being disrespectful. You will come off as pretentious, elitist, maybe. I would just move on. Cheers, guys! 🥤
I WISH I could have moved. But it was in the canoe, at the lodge (all night very loud and playing music, using up the limited electricity while the rest of the guests were trying to sleep), etc. And unfortunately the small property was surrounded by dense jungle, so there was nowhere else to go. It’s not the kind of place you can venture off and explore on your own. same with the whale watching boat. we were stuck with them! 😅 someone else suggested that the guides should remind people that being more silent would increase our chances of more and closer wildlife sightings.
@@StephenandAndie Oh, well that's a different scenario then. I thought maybe you were sitting in the common area. Being that they were loud all night playing music, then, yeah, I would have said something or contacted staff. Eh, I would have said something 😂

Yes! Nonstop talkers are annoying! I know of no way to ask them to stop without people getting offended...based on experience.
Yeah, we never came up with a good way, either.
I'm one of those obnoxious people who talks all the time. LOL
Seriously, I WISH you could tell people to shut up nicely, but anything you say will probably just make them offended. But if you will never see them again, it might be worth it? Too bad you couldn't sneak away to a different part of the shore or jungle where you could nature listen in peace and quiet ;-)
I'm not brave enough to venture into the jungle on my own. 😅 A friend suggested that the tour guides might suggest people shush in order to maximize the experience and the chances of seeing more wildlife. I might discreetly ask them to do that in the future, if it happens again.
