A 54.4 first lap! Crazy running but I guess entirely "possible" given the athletes of the time. The irony is that the winner of this semi final despite their fast running placed only 4th in the final but still ran under 1:56.
Most athletes in this run were doped up to their ears. East Germans had a state- supported doping system. I am sure the Soviets were not far behind.

I've lived in Russia and while technically East Germany wasn't one of the cluster of 15 country/states that made up the CCCP, It was, for all intents and purposes a Soviet Satellite State. The SED, the ruling party of East Germany was formed by mandate of Stalin. And trust me that no major decisions were made before running them by the Kremlin first. Ever been to East or West Germany in the 70's? If so you'll understand. East Germany was referred to as the "Soviet Zone" by West Germans. And no, I won't "double-check" or provide you a link for evidence. Personal experience is not something indexed by Google.

54,5 first lap 62 second lap. This way you can't win the final although you were the athlete in best shape of all. 57, 5 - 58 and she would have won the final. Bad strategy

Judy Pollock was never on drugs. She was a 400m Bronze medalist in 1964 and moved up an event. She ran about 1:59-2:00. So she's hardly worthless.
