    I got the idea of tech skiing from you and Paul at a camp at Hintertux. I saw you guys go carved precise short rounded turns on red/black pitch on bumped up piste that was covered in 40 cm of fresh snow. 95 people of 100 were lost, fithign for live. 3 Austrian Statlicher instructors went down the hill with ease, employing mogul/off-piste style. Only you and Paul went down carving complete rounded short turns like you had freshly groomed piste beneathe your skis. Since than - this is a tech skiing sample for me. Witness it there and than really motivated me and kept the spark burning!

    Awesome video. I’m a 61 year old life long skier and this video sums up my attitude to skiing and pursuits every time I go out. Great explanation and rational breakdown of skiing that is ultimately about very intuitive feeling centered experience.

    Great stuff. Yeah, I totally agree. I think most tech skiers regard skiing not as race but rather as a dance. The idea isn't to go fast and be first. The idea is to look fast, look pretty and have fun.

    Haha, I love how analytical you are about explaining that it's about having fun. To me, the clip of the snowboarder sums it up best. This stuff is difficult to learn but is sooo much fun to execute.

    After 55 years of teaching and competing, I am a huge fan of your skiing and video work. Not sure if you believe in synchronicity, but today I spent the afternoon working on a chapter in my second book related to skiing that sought to define and explain what we mean today by 'technical skiing'. As soon as I finished the draft, I went on to the daily check of my youtube channel and your new video was the very first on the list. It included many of my exact same focuses including 'INTENT'. Synchronicity; gotta love it. Great job, and perfect timing, since you reminded me to put more focus on the fun aspect, not just the technique.

    Another great video, Reilly! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic. Very well put into words! I totally agree. For me tech skiing is about improving my skills, (the never-ending task of) striving towards perfection (both from at performance and aesthetically point of view), achieving certain moves and giving myself more options when skiing - all with the end goal of having more fun and being better able to express myself while interacting with the mountain. /Janus

    I’d say there is also an element of ‘art’ to it, and the challenge is to master the art of the turn in any terrain, in a way similar to martial arts, which is much more than about just knocking someone out. Beauty, elegance, style and grace definitely play a big role in becoming a master of tech skiing.

    yup great chat here explainging tech skiing. Ive tired explaing it to folk before and have struggled a bit .....for me this type of skiing has had me hooked on chasing maximum feels on all of my runs and made me work on things that add to that . I traded the wide skis for anything slalom and have found with practice and patience a lot is possible. I continue to enjoy a lot of yur content thanks heaps keep it up...

    Nice breakdown. You articulate exactly what I’ve thought for years. Spent many seasons chasing sticks in race courses, love bumps, steeps, pow, crud, carving etc. I tended to think of it all as “free” skiing but that label evokes a particular slant and doesn’t necessarily include good technique.

    Nice explanation of your thinking Reilly. I really liked you talking about your intent. I have been using that word a lot, myself, lately. Especially when it comes to doing movement description. I believe it is wholly important to understand the individuals intent before you go into any sort of description of ski performance or body mechanics.

    As always, interesting topic. Perhaps a bit off topic but I think of another aspect of racing that I would add under "intent" and that would be the need to navigate through gates. Your course down the hill is set (for better or for worse). For a racer, not a problem. As a free skier, I like to have options. This is how I have fun.

    always like your video, one thing maybe you could explain more is modern WC mogul skiing technique vs the mogul skiing technique used in tech skiing? in areas like line choice, A-E, edging/carving, knee/hip angulation, etc.

    I have a freind thst skis at Squaw Valley that I would love to see ski wirh these top level skiers like Riley or even World Cup level skiers. He skis through steep, firm, rough conditions as if he was on an easy groomer. I have never seen anyone that skis like him and there are a lot of great skiers here. There is a story of him and his brother skiing with Glen Plake years ago and Plake had to bail after two runs because he couldn't keep up. It would perhaps be a humbling experience, but an eye opener.

    It's an interesting point of view, but maybe too "personal" and maybe something is missing.
    For example, if we want to define a "complete" skier, we cannot exclude jumping, IMO.

    I don’t disagree with the takeaway but I would have still said there was a closer relationship to the technical events. That effectively we were talking slalom and GS style turns on groomed terrain. Maybe I’m alone. Also you make a lot of comments that the point is not to be the same as racing true. Although your skiing and instruction is far more race inspired. I think generally speaking the more modern race techniques enhance fun relative to more traditional rigid ski school taught forms. More edge angulation, more lateral acceleration, more dynamic. Again what you say in the video is not wrong as to what the difference between being in a race course vs “tech skiing” but taken literally it maybe reinforces rigid or outdated techniques (which again doesn’t strike me as your style)

    There's already internationally recognized term as a 'interski'. Why would you want to create or call it a different term by 'tech ski'?

    • @ReillyMcGlashan
      @ReillyMcGlashan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interski is a congress that all countries that have a membership with the ISIA attend every 4 years and share their ideology on ski technique and learning methods. Interski has nothing to do with what I am talking about in this video which is why it is relevant. Do you know what Interski is?

    • @tube7769
      @tube7769 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ReillyMcGlashan Well..sure. But as you might be aware or not, the 'interski' is itself widely accepted in asian countries (especially in Korea, Japan and China) as a technical terminology to indicate a specific discipline that you are describing. I am not arguing but just curious.

    • @ReillyMcGlashan
      @ReillyMcGlashan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tube7769 The Interski congress has been around for 70 years already, so maybe we should be asking the question why did Koreans, Chinese take the congresses name? (I have never heard this while living in Japan, in-fact the competition is the "Technology" skiing comps which people also refer to it as "tech" from what I understand with my limited Japanese)

      I’ve only skied Japan once (Niseko) and while it was super fun the bump skiing was pretty contrived - lots of manmade bump lines that required zipper line type skiing. Seems what he’s talking about here is ability to negotiate a variety of terrain including naturally formed moguls with good technique. Never thought of that as Asian skiing style.
