  • Welcome to week two of our Emma Does Cyclo-Cross series, where Emma builds up to her first ever cross race. This week Si is teaching the basics of getting on and off a moving bike. He runs through the dismount, remount and also running while carrying your cross bike.

Emma is learning fast and after this week's lesson, she can now safely dismount and remount her cyclocross bike. Emma is still wearing her knee and elbow pads but we're sure they'll soon be ditched! This is a far more advanced skill than last week and can take time to master. Even the very quick learner Emma had a couple of tumbles while perfecting the technique. Watch the full video to see how she goes.

Great video. I like how it was more of a lesson where everything was explained, broken down, we saw Emma try it, make some mistakes, talk about them and how to fix them, and then try again. That's how most of us will learn something like this, and it is great to see a more realistic look at the process. It didn't feel like Emma had been practicing it for two weeks, then filmed a video on it - you could see she was actually learning it there. Good stuff.

In my first cyclocross race I fell the exact same way that Emma did. It happened on my first approach to barriers in race and I spent the rest of the race trading places with a 14 year old before falling back to last place after crashing a million times. Finished the race and went straight to the hospital for stitches. A year later and I recently got 2nd at a cross race. You'll get there Emma!

This is a much improved video over the equivalent older one with Matt Stephens being schooled in 'cross. The breakdown of things to do in a dismount or remount is much better defined, and consequently easier for newbies. Good work Si, Emma, and GCN.

The dismount... Well, that was something we all did as kids (at least where I grew up). Of course we weren't clipped-in and were agile with zero fear. Perhaps due to the fact we were on ours for hours every day.
I am enjoying this series immensely. Thanks to Si and Emma.

Cheers to Emma for letting us watch her learn. As someone considerably less accomplished than her I find it embarrassing and irritating to have some watch me learn and especially struggle. Many, many years ago I came from the velodrome and had to learn very similar techniques to race in IU Little 500. I spent many hours of bruising practice including a particularly painful crash on a sandstone track in Texas before I mastered it. But then I was golden and felt totally comfortable. If I can do it in months, Emma can do it in weeks. Wish I’d had Si as a teacher back then. Thanks GCN.

I crushed my nuts a few times learning to mount/dismount before realizing you're supposed to aim to land on your inner thigh on the saddle.
It helps to think of it as sliding into the saddle rather jumping on to it

  • @RandyArellano

Would've been cool to have Lasty be in on this, as well, helping out Emma. When I was helping out teammates on CX skills, I would go over mounting the bike first, then teach the dismount. I found it easier for people to build confidence when they knew how to mount the bike first. Also, being on the short side (like Emma) for shouldering the bike, I would recommend having her lift the bike by the downtube. This helps bring the bike higher up and makes it easier to put it on the shoulder. Then from that position, your hand can just slide across to grab the handlebar. This helped me the most in that aspect.

Many clinics over here (in the US) teach being clipped out on the left side first, especially for those just learning 'cross. It makes it so that you can't really mess up approaching a barrier or running section and do something embarrassing or spectacular if you panic and can't clip out. You can ride on the arch of your foot for a few pedal strokes and ensure you'll always get out doing this slight change in procedure.

  • @ChickenDinnerz

I remember watching the cross videos with Matt 4 years ago and they helped me when I was beginning. For anyone getting into it now, my advice is to find f your local race and enter it! Everyone is very friendly and you get such a variety of riders that you won't feel like an odd one out. Also, it's the best way to learn! Just do it

Great job, Emma! Practice makes perfect. You should consider doing a collab video with GMBN about understanding line choice through gnarly terrain. No one knows dirt better than the boys at the Dirt Shed. The skills you learn on a mountain bike during climbs and descents really enhance your road/gravel/cx rides on how to really handle your bike and planning ahead. I became a better road cyclist because of mountain biking. Get on an XC hardtail and get dirty!

4:37 this is why I recently swapped to a Shimano dual pedal. One side clipless and other side flat. I use the clipless one for road riding and flats for CX. Just no fun in falling. CX has way too many obstacles for me to be comfortable being clipped in for.

This is a great video, but it's missing something... what is it... oh wait I know what this video is missing. it is Matt Stephens laughter! Wouldn't it be possible to sample it and then cut it in every now and then in your cyclocross videos when someone falls of their bike? Or maybe Emma could practice the Stephens laughter as well? (if that is not under copyright, of course?)

Not done much cyclocross racing but the tip of push the bike slightly forward before mounting whilst running might make the difference between me looking like I know what I'm doing and the large elephant attempting to squish my bike.

I have tried today to dismount and it turned out that the body balance is crucial. With that in mind it went pretty good. Remount on the other hand felt quite weird (I mean only the start position as I wasn't brave enough to jump on the saddle) and it seems to be far more difficult than dismounting.

I just tried both of these techniques for the first time on my road and mountain bikes. Got it first try on the MB, but not yet on the road bike. I guess there's a reason they have different geometry.

when carrying her bike for a longer time maybe emma should try to wrap her arm under the down tube and not around the head tube (this is also how Sanne Cant and many others do it). this works better when your arms aren't as long as Simons

Nice - this was great. The thing is, these techniques, yes they're necessary, but unless you're battling someone neck to neck for the win, or a placing, it's the rest of the race where it's won and lost. The pace in CX is so high. I just get left behind on the normal riding parts! A second here and there on the dismounts etc doesn't make any difference to my placings :-)

If you get of your bike on side which has dominant hand will give you more control also the further forward your first foot comes down will help with momentum. Also if you put a foot on pedal then launch into saddle is faster and more control
