This is one of my favorite audio review channels. I'm from Canada and I fancy European audio. I recently purchased a DUAL 618Q Turntable and Mission 770 Speakers both in Walnut veneer finishes. The friendly banter along with the wealth of knowledge and experience that both Mike and Dave provide, very often give me their own slight different perspectives of the products that they review.. The Mission 770 speakers, were never even a consideration until I seen their review then found a dealer to audition them. I am a bit baffled that they have not accumulated subscribers at a faster rate. You casual viewers out there should show your support and subscribe to this channel. Every episode is viewership worthy. Best of luck guys. And a thumbs up to the RUSH fan guy, who commented below!

Cheers for your support. To be fair, we've made no serious effort to publicise the channel - no website, no proper social media engagement, etc. - so we remain the best kept secret on TH-cam. 🙂 Greetings to all our Anglosphere friends across The Pond, and thank you Canada for Rush and Neil Young!

@@MrVinylista Here are a couple of well known bands from Canada each formed in the mid 80's and both from Kingston Ontario. They are "The Tragically Hip" and "The Headstones". Both are fully cataloged on Spotify and possibly other streaming services. We here in Canada are very proud of these 2 bands. Hope you have the time to enjoy them.

You’re right about them being ‘not for everyone’. I auditioned the slightly larger ATC stand mounts at our local hi-fi dealer and found I preferred the sweeter sounding ProAc pair they were compared to. My music preference tends to classical and jazz vocal, where I think I missed the mid-range warmth. Use your bricks and mortar hifi shop if you can, folks 😊

I went to my local dealer to hear the Rega io with ATC SCM7s for my computer desktop HiFi. I actually listened to the Rega Brio driving a pair of SCM11s in a large listening room. Great demo and I bought the SCM7s and the Rega io. Not disappointed. Great "near field" solution. If you're in Nottingham I recommend Castle Sound & Vision (no affiliation).

Hello chaps, Mr Wibble here. Great review guys and also great to see you up at the UK Audio show over the weekend. Knowing that you both like unusual and interesting bits of hi-fi kit, one pair of speakers blew me away at the show - I could not believe they sounded so impressive given their tiny, tiny size. So as a recommendation - take a look at the Alchris Audio -Booki Compact Bookshelf Speakers. Best wishes :)

They have such a realistic sound.. sometimes when in Movies someone knocks on the door...i go to open mine. This never happened with my 10 K Dolby Digital System. They are just fantastic with all kinds of music. Maybe its because a lot of Music and Movies are mixed with ATCs.t

Hi Mike & Dave. Spoke to you at the bar at the Bristol show I'm the Exposure Super / Quad Electrostatics fan. Mike you seem to have the exact same flavour in how Hi-Fi should sound as me so always eager to hear what you have to say. I had a chance recently to listen and purchase the ATC's after comparing them to the ProAc DB3R's (they're the ones with the ribbon tweeter). The ProAc's were fantastic especially vocals as that tweeter is something very very special indeed. However I couldn't afford the ProAc at the time, but although not as good still really enjoyed the ATC's over the similar priced competition. What Bass there is, is very good but really lacking low end (59 hz 6db down). So I bought a White pair the next size up the 19's for more Bass (52hz). This new and much better version of the old ATC SCM 19 has their new tweeter and I believe a reconfigured crossover. It has more bass but they still really needed a subwoofer to get the best out of them. My conclusion is for the price ATC speakers and Exposure power Amps are a match made in heaven only bettered by the ProAc DR'S with their ribbons. Thanks guys a really enjoyable channel 😄👍

They have a schizophrenic nature…a bit. At very low levels they still manage to be very detailed with good sound stage. The bass tappers off at this level. But the sound is still rewarding. At normal levels 55db or higher the are lovely at 80+ db they are total thugs and sound fantastic. Cheers. Oh they are being driven by Quad Artera pre and power or Exposure 3010 integrated.

Starting with curved SCM7’s and curved SCM11’s in August 2013 and followed by curved SCM19’s and curved SCM40’s in December 2013. I know this because we (Musicraft - Derby - UK) received the first production pairs of all four passive models 🙂 Btw, and out of interest SCM40A’s were released in April 2015 and SCM19A’s in April 2016. This is right up there with Car SOS as my favourite "TV" viewing, but a key question David - as a purveyor of the best Japanese direct drives, would be great to see one of these featured on the Riff?! Maybe not the Marantz, something a bit more accessible (TTS8000 / SP10) but not too common (1200). I really loved your journalism on these back in the day in World, which inspired me no end to seek out some of these models!! Thanks for a truly amazing youtube channel. Julian

@@MrVinylista yes that would be fab. I think these are so intriguing, things we never knew existed until later in life and true killer performers. If it hadn't been for those articles in Hifi World, I doubt we'd be having this convo so thank you indeed. I had an SP15 bought in florida and imported into the UK in the SH15 plinth. I fitted an Origin Live RB250 and G1042. Sounded great! The one thing that is truly puzzling to me is what arms and cartridges to match these heavy direct drives to, based on the modern choices available vs Technics EPA and 3009. Advice on forums seems to be all that's out there, but it feels very much trial and error. I dabbled with a Toshiba SR370 and a Rega arm and it sounded great to my ears, but apparently this is a "terrible combo" and you really need a Mission 774!! So if you do do the SP15, any system matching advice for heavy direct drives in terms of arms and carts would be massively appreciated David. Thank you again and keep up the awesome work on Hifi Riff.

    Hi fellas!
This is a sublime little speaker! However, I am not so optimistic with its power requirements. It is true that the impedance curve is very flat and so the amplifier needn't deliver huge current into them. However, they greatly benefit from power (wattage) and the more you have, they better they will sound.
Because they are a sealed box (no reflex port), placement is somewhat less troublesome than with some other ported speakers but also, the bass roll-off is a lot more gradual than with a ported speaker. With a ported speaker, the bass doesn't roll-off, it jumps off a cliff below the tuning frequency, even if that frequency is actually lower than the frequency at with a sealed box speaker starts to roll-off.
I think these are wonderful speakers, even though they might not be everyone's cup of tea. They are small but they represent 'real quality' and the drive units are impressively engineered and built.
By the way, I think the reason these sound so good is low distortion because of well ventilated voice-coils which do not heat up. It has to do with the fact these employ flat wire (as opposed to circular cross-section wire which is more typical). They can pack more copper into the same space. This is an engineer's approach to speaker design as opposed to a bean-counter's approach. No revolutionary tech, just proven and 'sound' engineering principles executed to a very high standard. This is also why ATC speakers are very robust and last for many years.
    Cheers fellas!
Roll on the MiniDisc review!! :)

They do need amplifier matching and certain amps work better than others. I have the SCM19 which have an even more surgeon scalpel like in presentation and I was happily living with a pair of diy 300W/ch monoblocks and they sang beautifully. Recently however a friend lent me his Audiospace nova m34 tube monos based on 4x EL34 tubes per channel and the ATC SCM 19 are being driven with even more gusto in their triode mode than the solid state amps ever did. This is just 32W/ch but I never feel any lack of power in a 20ft*20ft room even driving them to near 85-90 decibels. The slight dryness that is mentioned in the review is also alleviated by the sweetness of EL34s.

@@soumyajitdeb3943 If you want to 'rock out', 85-90 dB won't do it. A very big factor in all of this is how you listen to your music and what you consider 'loud'. The only reason why ATCs work well with tube amplification is the benign impedance of the speaker.
Personally, I am not a fan of EL34s or pentodes in general. They would be my last choice to pair with ATCs but if it sounds good to you, then that's all that matters.

@@antunkatona5674 End of the day you want something that sounds good. After trying multiple big watt solid states with massive power supplies, I find this amp to sound much cleaner than the SS amps. REALLY love your channel.... but either stop the 'riffometer' (just knowing you're reviewing something is almost enough) or, go to 1/10 increments.

Should be a flat sounding speaker (like their studio monitors) but bass starts rolling off at 100 Hz.

60hz not 100hz. I have SCM-11 and the bass starts to roll off at 55hz.

@@Taffy84 They are flat from 100 Hz and up. At 60 Hz they are already 60 Hz -5 dB, which is not too bad.

I don’t like there passive designs they all lack something. They need an active standmount. For 1k or there about’s I’d take the ae1 over these by a good long way.

I think they’re good with all music. You just notice they’re good with harder stuff because most other speakers are crap with that.

Good point. I was listening to a Prince live album today and although I know live albums aren’t always great recordings, my speakers just get confused or very busy at decent volumes.
