    Politics is actually derived from two ancient Greek words, "poly" meaning "many" and "tics" meaning "repulsive blood-sucking insects".

    Danish borrowed the French "peuple" and the meaning changed to "an unruly mob" or "lower class people, riotous men, petty criminals". "Pøbelvælde" is a very negative word meaning mob rule. "Vælde" is something like power or force. "Enevælde" is absolute monarchy. It is also a verb describing water pouring from a spring (probably same roots as a well). "Væld" is a spring.

      typograf62 Oh, now that you say it, the same happened in German, with the word "Pöbel" meaning mob, and more commonly used nowadays it's verb "pöbeln" which means to yell and abuse.

    5:27 The US has very little democracy in the Ancient Athenian sense, though. Ballot propositions/referenda and New England town meetings are as close as we get. That's because the Founding Fathers agreed with Aristotle and Plato regarding democracy as descending into mob rule.

I'm an unambitious woman in my speed of catching up with all the things I want/plan/hope/intend to do -- but Alliterative is definitely high on that list. One shouldn't have a burning ambition to become President merely for its own sake. Such an ambition is rightly criticised in both men and women and should be treated with the utmost suspicion. It's the reason your country has the two greatest narcissists in the world right now running for the presidency.

    • @Alliterative
      @Alliterative 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not my country! And I'm not going to argue that ambition can be good or bad in different contexts; all I was pointing out was that men and women are sometimes criticized/praised differently for similar actions.

    "Ambition is often criticised in women" great video as always, but I have to say I disagree! Ambition is very much encouraged and praised in women, so much so that sometimes women who seek "less ambitious" lifestyles (such as being a housewife, stay at home mum etc.) are criticised.

    • @Alliterative
      @Alliterative 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed -- the plain fact is that women are criticized for almost any choice they make, often by the same people for 'opposite' flaws. I was thinking, in this case, of news stories like this: www.teenvogue.com/story/hillary-clinton-laughs-too-ambitious-attack and the articles they cite like this one: www.cfa.harvard.edu/cfawis/bowles.pdf

    • @Alliterative
      @Alliterative 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed. In aggregate, I suspect many fewer men than women are criticized
      for ambition, and many fewer men than women are praised for their desire
      to stay at home, be happy with their situation, focus on things other
      than career, etc. But these things are by no means universal, and
      they're always in flux.

    • @withanametocome
      @withanametocome 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Certainly are not universal: take as token what Abdul-Aziz ibn Abdullah, Grand Mufti and biggest religious authority of Saudia Arabia, claimed in a fatwa:
      "There is no doubt that driving for women is not allowed given that such a thing leads to many ills and dire consequences, such as being alone (a thing forbidden to women), being unveiled, mixing with males without [proper] caution...[etc]"
      لا شك أن ذلك لا يجوز لأن قيادتها للسيارة تؤدي إلى مفاسد كثيرة وعواقب وخيمة، منها الخلوة المحرمة بالمرأة، ومنها السفور، ومنها الإختلاط بالرجال بدون حذر
      But not everyone is as caring in this matter as you are: take as token the 10-25 mill$ the Clinton Foundation has accepted from the "Kingdom of Saudi Arabia" according to its own webpage:
      www.clintonfoundation.org/contributors?category=%2410%2C000%2C001+to+%2425%2C000%2C000

    This video is great and all this channel too. Just wondering why the English classes never taught me etymology? In China We were required to rote all the bizarre words in English class and that made most students hate English

    • @Alliterative
      @Alliterative 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! You know, the same thing was true for me even as a native English speaker. I was terrible at spelling as a kid, and hated having to memorize all the weird rules and exceptions. As soon as I started learning the history of the language, and how sound changes etc. worked, it all started to make so much more sense, and became so much easier. I wish teachers had explained a little of that to me as a kid, I think it would have helped a lot.

    • @joy2000cyber
      @joy2000cyber 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alliterative Could it be simply because most English teachers don't know much about etymology themselves? Or a lot of knowledge of history of English words just did not exist before, until recently discovered by people like you with passion or phd in English?

    • @Alliterative
      @Alliterative 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The knowledge is certainly out there (I'm definitely using other people's scholarship, much of the time!) but it's true that teachers are generally not taught history of the language. So yes, that's probably the main reason. But I wish it was one of the things English teachers *did* regularly learn, I think it would make them better teachers.

    • @joy2000cyber
      @joy2000cyber 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alliterative you certainly deserve credit for popularizing these arcane knowledge. Do you think native speakers can significantly improve their English skills by learning etymology? Or maybe native speakers usually have already known some facts of etymology automatically or subconsciously?

      Ok, that's weird. It's fine on my account, but on Aven's account it stutters at the beginning and gets out of sync; played it with a couple of other browsers, and it was fine. No idea what the problem is; not sure whether I should re-upload it.
