What you are describing first showed itself to the world in 1995-1996 With Arjuna Ranatunga, Murali and the Sri Lankans. But this South African tour was when it finally reached boiling point and people finally dealt with this long lasting Australian Sporting cultural issue.
Good content really enjoyed it, I do think the interpretation of Warner is very generous at best. Throughout his career he has had constant question marks about his character and yet he seems to almost made out to be the victim.

No bowler ever admitted any part in it and yet, it would be impossible for them not to know that the ball had been tampered with. The truth still needs to come out. Recent years the Australian team has become a little better. But apart from the cheating bit, the Australian team has always had very less threshold in taking a sledge. Although they themselves don't think twice before going at players. India was one of the first who started giving them back. I have complete respect for warner and smith who have come back like champions. But I do feel that Australia sometimes take a bit too much pride in their own so called "Aussie Spirit" that they actually get blinded by it. This doco is clearly sympathetic to the Australians but it’s attempting to take into account all the factors that should be considered before passing judgement. Those who continue to insist that Smith and Warner should have been banned for life always ignore all those external issues (especially the role of Cricket Australia) as well as the fact that ball tampering has always been around in professional cricket. I think in years to come, when Smith and Warner have retired and we are struggling to replace them, their bans will be seen as a similar overreaction to Dawn Fraser’s ban for stealing a flag.

Always felt like that tour was a total ambush, from even before the Aussies arrived. The fact the series had been extended from the usual 3 to 4 matches gave an early indication of how much SA wanted a series win. But the systematic, premeditated attack on players wives and girlfriends by media, spectators and obviously some SA players was as vicious as it was ruthless and part of a bigger plan. The fact that players like Morkel and DeVilliers, who were delaying the end of their careers finishing not long afterwards, starred in the series also showed a single minded determination to beat Australia at their own game, and by any means! That it worked so well and Australia descended into self destruction after resorting to the appallingly desperate act of cheating on field, clearly filled all of SA with utter glee. The dark pleasure of an opponent who’d sold their soul to the devil for a series win! Don’t believe me? What is the state of SA cricket today in 2023? Australia are forever tainted with this like England is with Bodyline, but SA will never again be a power. They are done.

As an Englishman, i have to say that for some reason the Australian cricket team in most generations just seem so unlikable, there overt aggression, approach to the game and general demeanor, and dont think this is some natural English bias, or jealousy of some kind, we were thrashed for decades by the great West Indian teams, but i still hold the likes of Richards, Garner, and Holding in total awe and admiration of there class, put simply, the Aussie cricket team lacks class

Both Broad and Anderson are likely playing in their final ashes series, and could struggle with the demands of such a crucial series. Jack Leach will be a huge miss, as we lack a suitable replacement. I'm nervous, but not really afraid of the Aussies, but the first test will be crucial. Smith can take it away from us singlehandedly, if he is allowed to. Warner, is a bottler, as proved by his abstract failure last time out.

This is pretty easy to sum up - The coulture of both OZ and India that win at all costs no matter what you did is very damaging Kohli of india is the epitomy of this. A massive failure in the cricket board of the country to instill Fail play and the spirt of ceicket values in players from club level on up. Next step was the selction of players that whilst very talented have no bussiness play international test cricket due to attitude Steve Smith is the example of this. The final step in the failing of OZ cricket baord was not to ban all 3 players involved from playing for OZ at international level for life. Any test match or other international that any of these cheats plays in should have an * attached as the result can never be fully trusted.

Recent years the Australian team has become a little better. But apart from the cheating bit, the Australian team has always had very less threshold in taking a sledge. Although they themselves don't think twice before going at players. India was one of the first who started giving them back. I have complete respect for warner and smith who have come back like champions. But I do feel that Australia sometimes take a bit too much pride in their own so called "Aussie Spirit" that they actually get blinded by it. No doubt they are and have been a much better team than india in the last two decades though
Funny thing is that compared to places like Pakistan and India which have been marred by much greater things like actual match fixing, this is pretty tame in comparison. Sandpaper gate in those countries would not even be frowned upon and would have been forgotten about in a week lol

This doco is clearly sympathetic to the Australians but it’s attempting to take into account all the factors that should be considered before passing judgement. Those who continue to insist that Smith and Warner should have been banned for life always ignore all those external issues (especially the role of Cricket Australia) as well as the fact that ball tampering has always been around in professional cricket. I think in years to come, when Smith and Warner have retired and we are struggling to replace them, their bans will be seen as a similar overreaction to Dawn Fraser’s ban for stealing a flag.

Always felt like that tour was a total ambush, from even before the Aussies arrived. The fact the series had been extended from the usual 3 to 4 matches gave an early indication of how much SA wanted a series win. But the systematic, premeditated attack on players wives and girlfriends by media, spectators and obviously some SA players was as vicious as it was ruthless and part of a bigger plan. The fact that players like Morkel and DeVilliers, who were delaying the end of their careers finishing not long afterwards, starred in the series also showed a single minded determination to beat Australia at their own game, and by any means! That it worked so well and Australia descended into self destruction after resorting to the appallingly desperate act of cheating on field, clearly filled all of SA with utter glee. The dark pleasure of an opponent who’d sold their soul to the devil for a series win! Don’t believe me? What is the state of SA cricket today in 2023? Australia are forever tainted with this like England is with Bodyline, but SA will never again be a power. They are done.
You are so wrong, both Australia and South Africa have always played right on the line of gamesmanship and cheating: underarm bowling etc but its because they want to win so badly, in both teams lies a true passion for the game which can sometimes boil over into dark territory. I don't understand how a South African plan could result in the most premeditated blatant cheating the game has ever seen. The South African team nor anyone else could have expected the Aussies to do that. While Australia are good at this point in time and South Africa are not, that will change as in this video it shows that from 2010-14 South Africa were the best team in the world while Australia struggled. Also South Africa won that series 3-1. Idiot.

As an Englishman, i have to say that for some reason the Australian cricket team in most generations just seem so unlikable, there overt aggression, approach to the game and general demeanor, and dont think this is some natural English bias, or jealousy of some kind, we were thrashed for decades by the great West Indian teams, but i still hold the likes of Richards, Garner, and Holding in total awe and admiration of there class, put simply, the Aussie cricket team lacks class
Interesting to remember that it was a tour of Australia, where the Windies were very badly abused, that made Clive Lloyd (Now Sir Clive), tour the Caribbean Islands looking for for the tallest, fastest and best deliverers of a cricket ball that he could find! That’s where the Windies pace attack came from.....next tour of Oz and they destroyed Australia!

I believe we have the batsmen to do a job on the Aussies. My only worry is our bowling line up. Both Broad and Anderson are likely playing in their final ashes series, and could struggle with the demands of such a crucial series. Jack Leach will be a huge miss, as we lack a suitable replacement. I'm nervous, but not really afraid of the Aussies, but the first test will be crucial. Smith can take it away from us singlehandedly, if he is allowed to. Warner, is a bottler, as proved by his abstract failure last time out.

Stokes injury concerns me too, but we have back up in middle order. Will Birstow keep wicket? My guess is yes, but with him just returning from injury, I'd use him as a batsman only. So many questions, but it could be another epic series.

South African fan here, the 1st test in Durban in 2018, every Aussie seamer, even the dobbers were hooping it round corners in that match, blatantly obvious ball tampering to anyone that has watched cricket for more than 5 mins. Cant tell you how satisfying it was when they got caught in the following test, then proceeded to get bent over the table in the rest of the series.
