  • There are some comments made at the end of the video by a couple of Newcastle fans that I personally deplore. They were embarrassing and don’t reflect the amazing fan base we have, or their views. It throws up some controversial views however and I myself could present a valid argument for editing the footage out of the video. There is no clear right, or wrong.
Firstly, I was recording my last segment of the that particular video and I was in mid flow when I was 'video bombed' by some fans. This happens quite regularly, and I don't mind, but as I'm in full flow, I'm not always aware of what is being screamed in that moment. As their comments initially came out, you'll see that I'm smiling and nodding. This is NOT in agreement with their words, or that I find them funny. I'm smiling at the moment as fans are clearly excited. You will notice my expression change as they walk off, as I filter what I'd just heard and it dawned on me. All of this happened in around 2-3 seconds.
One should also not lose sight of the very important fact that they WANTED to be on video. For all they knew, I could have been broadcasting live. They purposely approached me with the clear intent of having their message heard on video. They are NOT victims of an unwitting faux pas that was caught on camera.
I did however initially consider snipping it out but it would have ruined the flow and continuity of the video clip. I decided instead to leave it in but added a comment on the footage which showed my disapproval. I did this because on balance, I reminded myself that I have a channel which prides itself on authenticity and I'm not afraid to tackle controversial issues. On this occasion, I wanted this incident to be seen so that fans could see and understand their effect has on others, even their words. It all falls under the same umbrella as misogyny, racism, homophobia and spreads hate. Views that football is trying to eradicate.
In this case, gloating about others losing their lives in an air crash goes way beyond opposition 'fan banter'. We should also remember Newcastle fans Liam Sweeney and John Alder who tragically lost their lives on MH17 which was flying to New Zealand in 2014.
Finally, sanitising content to make everyone look great I believe erodes the authenticity of my channel and society in general, but it should be stressed that I take no pride in their comments appearing in my video. I firmly believe that allowing it in my video will bring more good than harm as it will raise awareness, rather than hiding it and allowing hate to silently breed uninterrupted in the shadows. That for me would be the cowardly thing to do.
Neither have I used the incident in the video title or thumbnail, as click bait to drive up views. By doing this, the incident is invisible to the naked eye and I haven't driven the video to make money from it. In fact, this video is performing quite normally for this type of 'away fan' content and any additional views generated through other social media interest is negligible.
