    Thank you for the wedge information. I’m restoring a 7 oz. true value for my granddaughter. After watching many videos of yours, I can say you spend many hours doing your restorations. My granddaughter and you have a huge love of hammers. I’m having it engraved , then I’ll set the handle. Thank You

    Always enjoy your teaching. You are good at it. I am getting older but never to old to learn. Yes I like to drive and see the trees. Here in Kansas some are just starting to change and others are bare. My front yard tree is already bare and we haven't had a frost yet. Stay safe and healthy my friend. Thanks

    I love the chrome skull in the background. It's fun how you change it up...red diamond eyes, then gone... This channel is great for many reasons. Thanks for being the guy that can mentor us. ps: I've bought too many tools to refurbish because of this channel...but I've enjoyed them all. (And I ain't a kid...just turned 69.)

    My uncle was working for my grandfather when he was young. He was apprentice worker and held the hammer close to the head. My grandfather told him seval times to grab the handle at the end and get a full swing. Well he did not do that so my gradfather took the hammer and cut the handle in half. he said " If your not going to use the whole handle, you can not have it" Love the Fall Colors, keep up the great work. Thanks Bill

    I am just restoring a 1 1/2 lb Brades 1773 that needed a new handle while enjoying this video.
    Jewellers and tinsmiths hammers always fascinate me with the variety of curved and tear drop handles. The handles are sometimes quite long and thin (for the weight of the head) for flexibility and springiness.
    There is a woodland area not far from me in the UK where people still visit, often travelling some distance. It looks almost like the woods are on fire when backlit at sunset.

    We had a Real tick problem a few years back. We tried sprays, collars on the dogs (the kids kept taking them off saying they itched) I relocated some rare breed cats like yours 2 males and 4 females to our property. In the past 2 years we have not had any ticks show up at all. Gotta love possums

    I love a good wood handled claw hammer. When I was about 8 years old my father built a side porch with vertical grain fir boards. He let me learn to drive and pull and straighten nails by practicing on the cutoffs from that project. I still have the Collins bent claw trim hammer and the Craftsman straight claw 16 oz. Hammer. That Craftsman hammer is now on its third wood handle and is going strong today. The Collins is still on its original handle and is a terrific trim hammer. I have mada a lot of rosebuds with those hammers. Thanks for the video.

    My grandfather and both of his sons were carpenters and went their whole careers using 16 ounce curved claw hammers. Grandpa used ones with wood handles. Art and Carl preferred the Stanleys with the tubular steel handle. In my work van I keep a 16 oz. wood handled hammer, a 20 oz. Estwing straight claw, a Plumb shingling hatchet, and a 2 lb. drilling hammer. I almost forgot, there's also an 8 lb. sledge hammer for when something really needs to be persuaded. 90% of the time I carry the 16 oz. and to tell the truth I probably drive more nails with air guns than by hand.
    The big long handled framing hammers were invented by carpenters in California after WWII, who took rigging axes,( think long handled hatchet with a hammer face opposite the blade), cut the blades off and welded on straight claws instead.
    I've heard that years ago, if an apprentice carpenter was caught choking up on the handle, his boss grab the hammer cut the handle offjdst below where the kid had been holding it.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My Great Grandfather designed and built his own home when he was 21. Back then almost all hammers were 16oz and carpenters swung them all day long. Then in the 70’s and 80’s heavier hammers were popular and lots of carpenters were getting tendinitis of the elbow. Nailguns have changed the game and are a great tool for anyone in the trade.
      I too heard the story of “the boss cutting the handle off of guys choking up” however I always felt that was a wives tale because I have seen guys who are awesome with a hammer and guys who just never get the knack of it, even after years. 😃👍

    although not my regular vintage find found free tools today,
    for background, I am currently attending my second to last year of high school and go to a trade school one day a week for extra credit, Now my favourite thing to do with my lunch + any spare time is to go looking in any of the scrap bins scattered around the campus,
    I have found many, many things in this past year. things like good quality files, both almost brand new and knife making material, bearly used file/tool handles, 1hp electric motors, large stainless part to different thing former student have made, and not wanted, thick steel and aluminium sheet and a large rod for lathe stock.
    today I found a newer model thor(ex) soft face hammer, just sitting in one of the regular bins. I made sure to ask the tutor if it was a mistake, and he told me to take it.all it needs is the new face put on it, which will cost around 8-10 dollars when I next go into the supply shop.
    this is a 65 dollar hammer, and its a quality made in England product. It is the nylon handled version, so not a museum quality item, but I can confirm that it will be doing its job and doing it well :)
    there was scuffing on the nylon handle so I scraped the surface with a razor blade and then made a big mistake, trying to flame polish the material!
    it started turning sooty and acting weird as soon as the heat hit it. the soot wiped off mostly but there is scaring in the material, nothing too drastic.I suppose that's why you don't believe everything you read on the internet haha
    sorry for the long post, love your content, would love to see another challenge soon
    stay safe
    all the best,
    Jimmy from NZ

    I used to have a stray dog at my last house that looked just like your cat. It liked getting into the large tot eof dog food we kept there. One time, somehow, the lid closed behind it. My son reached in to get some food to feed our dog and felt something fuzzy that made him, thankfully, withdraw his hand very quickly. Those type of stray dogs and cats have very sharp teeth.
    I feel sorry for everyone living where leaves do not turn color each fall. They have never experienced life to its fullest.

    Those look more like paper wasps than yellowjackets. Wasps are usually calm and won't bother you if you leave them alone. But Yellowjackets are aggresive and will chase after you and give you a nasty sting. The wasps are looking for crevices and places they can be protected over winter at this time of year and don't die.

    I gutted and rebuilt my first house. It started out life as a 20 x 20 summer cabin which was added onto at least three times. When I was working on the original part, I found that the lumber was made from old growth redwood. This lumber had been drying for 70 years or more and was hard as stone and heavy as lead. You could only cut it with a new carbide tipped saw, and forget about driving a nail into it without predrilling the hole. Even then the hole had to be almost the same size as the nail to get the nail in. It was a nightmare to work with. In retrospect, I probably should have saved some of that wood. 🤔

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! In the 60's they downed a lot of old growth trees for everything from picnic tables to furniture... Some "old growth" trees can live for thousands of years but trees like Maple and Hickory need to be harvested or they just die and rot... They live 100 years or so. Redwoods live 500-700 years!

Between the longest highway in the state that is our main road and folks riding the Blue Ridge Parkway, it's FULL! I could swing a 6# splitter harder than an 8. SPEED and hitting power. And the ONLY block I couldn't split with sledge and wedge and splitter was a SEASONED poplar block. Hard as a FILE. Ended up cutting in half with the saw and then splitting. Never seen one here in queens but I have on long island and upstate. None on my property that I know of... =D Go Camp Keowa!!!!!!!!

      Jim- I am under the impression that a Tulip poplar and yellow poplar are the same? “Poplar wood comes from Liriodendron tulipifera L., also known as the tuliptree or yellow poplar”

      @@ScoutCrafter you are correct from the lumber aspect, I was thinking from the botany aspect with true poplars like the cottonwoods.

    John, What do you think about KILN dried as opposed to AIR dried wood for hammer handles.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martin- Honestly I always had issues with drying lumber, I’ve never been able to air dry lumber without it checking or splitting. I always liked kiln dried lumber for furniture making because of it’s stability... However I’ve never had access to air dried dimensional lumber... 😃👍

    My wife and I have been looking for 10 acres or so to buy for our retirement. We live in Florida and are totally defeated by the heat. Can we get a bit of land like that in upstate NY for a reasonable price? We want to be around nice people who have a small town mentality. The kind of people who look out for their neighbors, but understand that privacy is important as well. Our budget for a nice piece of land like that is around 100k. Is that possible there?

    • @ScoutCrafter

      Hi John, Absolutely! One thing about upstate NY is the lack of employment keeps real estate affordable, it's been that way for 50 years. Prices on homes up there never go up... Some people hate the cold so not many people looking for residence up there.. If you want to have some fun go over to Andrew's channel and look at some of the real estate available in Maine... I always get a kick out of his videos! th-cam.com/users/AndrewMooersmainerealestatevideos
