I was 12 years old when in 1980 I kept nagging my parents to allow me to go see a movie because Princess Leia was in. They allowed me to go see it on my own... And from the very opening notes of Matt "Guitar" Murphy droning that A# and the section coming in The Blues Brothers changed my life. I took a hammer to m piggy bank that very night and bought the soundtrack the next day. I took up guitar lessons a week after and to this day 40 years later I'm still playing the blues. So thank Carrie Fisher for taking that role, without her I'd have become a square.

It was so popular they took it on the road and even recorded several albums. ‘Rubber Biscuit” was one of their hits. Dan got John interested in blues music. John wanted to do a bit performing a blues song on Saturday Night Live. Lorne Michaels said they couldn't do a musical number, they booked singers. They could only sing if it was a sketch. There were be costumes in the wardrobe closet, so they created the Blues Bees and that was enough of a sketch to make it in air. The audience loved the performance. John and Dan created The Blues Brothers and started performing in clubs around Chicago. Now that they were a musical act Lorne let them perform on SNL. They released a couple albums. Then the idea for the movie came up.

Someone may have mentioned it but the mall they filmed the chase scene in had already permanently closed and the production crew actually put most of the stores together just to shoot that scene. It was called the Dixie Square Mall.

    • @LogicalNiko
      @LogicalNiko ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@Rodshark75 The mall was never really used after 1979. Except as dug den, gang turf, and a favorite hangout for homeless. There were attempts to use the property for a few years but all failed. In 1985 a police station was constructed on part of the lot, but they ran into discovery of massive foundation issues.
The mall was actually the mall was in the ownership of the local school district as they used it for schooling in 1979 when the schools were finishing construction of a new building which went over schedule. That summer Landis leased the mall, staged all the shops (which were vacant and had minimal signs). Then they left it partially destroyed (cleaned up, but with the signs intact, most of the storefronts having been knocked out, and the floors heavily damaged). The district sued for excess damages to the property, but then later dropped the case.
The city of Harvey abandoned it, and it was left to rot from 1981. It became a crime/gang den. At least one documented murder was committed there, but there were believed others (police finding bodies there was not unusual).
In 2006 some contractor tried to deal with the place, they demolished one department store but that just made more structural issues in the process and abandoned the rest of it.
In 2012 Illinois State and the City of Harvey were actually able to use federal relief funds from Hurricane Ike (is a very convoluted way) to demolish the buildings.

I'll never forget the first time I saw Blues Brothers. It was a sunny afternoon and I was walking around town and needed to kill some time. So I decided to go to the movies. I saw the title of the movie and was captivated because I was very into blues and funk at the time. I was excited about the artists in this movie and had to laugh my ass off at the comedy scenes. How cool was that. I missed every other joke because I was laughing so hard. Afterwards I told my friends about this movie and no one would believe me that there was a movie with Aretha Franklin, John Lee Hooker, Ray Charles and James Brown and more together. A few days later, we went to the movies together again to prove that I wasn't a liar or an idiot. I can't even count how many times I've seen that movie since then. One was already brought up: Joe Walsh was the prisoner who jumped on the table and started dancing at the end. The car was supposed to have magical properties due to a large magnet above the garage. Dan Aykroyd wrote a very long screenplay, but it was edited down a lot by Landis. The Blues Brothers was a musical skit on Saturday Night Live in the 1970's. This is Aykroyd's backstory for the band. Paul Schaffer was the band leader on SNL but couldn't be in this movie. The stunt crew leaders had to prove the Ford Pinto was airworthy and wouldn't sail in the wrong direction before they dropped it.

This movie is close to my heart because of the nostalgia factor. I was born and raised in Chicago, and I can call out pretty much all of the locations, especially the downtown ones that you can barely see due to them speeding through the Loop.

They also really were going close to 120 mph through downtown Chicago too. John Landis thought people would notice if they filmed it slower and sped the film up So he just did it for real.

I think that John Lee Hooker was the street musician. Singer Steve Lawrence was Sline, the agent. 1960s top model Twiggy was the girl at the gas station.

For 2 years, this movie had the record for most cars trashed in a movie at 104 cars. Amazingly, no one was apparently injured filming the climatic chase scene, although Belushi did injure himself riding a kid's skateboard just before filming the concert!
The record was broken by The Junkman which destroyed 150 cars and a plane 2 years later.
The record is currently held by Transformers 3 at 532 cars (coincidentally also filmed in Chicago)

I saw this on its opening Friday, and is one of the most memorable nights of my life. A friend and I had driven from Portland to Seattle to compete in the Friday night bicycle races at the velodrome, but they got rained out. So we headed downtown looking for something to do. We saw the marquee at the Coliseum Theater, and got in just in time. The theater was packed and raucous. We had a great time. It was a few years before I became a real blues fan and understood just how important all those musicians were. The Blue Brothers set me off on my blues journey. My first blues concert was John Lee Hooker. Sadly I never got to see Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Ray Charles or any of those other legends, but I have seen BB King, Etta James, Albert Collins, Pinetop Perkins, Charles Brown and many others.

    The BEST movie soundtrack EVER!!!
I must have been about 8 or 9 when I first saw the Blues Brothers and I was hooked to the music, so much so I went out and got the soundtrack on cd and started buying old blues records. This held the record for the most cars wrecked on screen until a movie in the late 90s beat it by one vehicle, that movie was Blues Brothers 2000 😆. When ever me and my best mate used to go on road trips we would start them with “It’s a 106 miles to Chicago….” 😂

I always feel old when I see a reactor who doesn't recognize any of the musicians in this movie. Good thing they list them at the end. You already recognized some of the non-musician cameos, like Frank Oz and Paul Reubens. The woman in the gas station was 60s supermodel Twiggy and the guy in the sauna was Steve Lawrence. All of the band were well known session musicians at the time- Matt "guitar" Murphy, Donald "duck" Dunn, etc. They've all played with the who's who of rock and blues musicians.
The mall chase scene was, at the time, the most expensive scene ever filmed. They found an abandoned mall and fixed it up and filled it with stores, then proceeded to destroy it.
And, only because you brought up the French Connection chase scene, I heard that was done without permits. They just set up their cameras and filmed, then left before the cops showed up, so all the "extras" you see are real people.
