Hall Johnson (1888-1970) was an accomplished violinist and a magnificent composer and arranger. One of his enduring legacies are his arrangements of spirituals. His goal in arranging them was to lift the humble tunes he knew to the level of great art, so that they would stand proudly alongside the great European classical repertoire. He succeeded.
