+Farmer MeeMaw Thanks! Goofy little showgirl is sitting on eggs even though the boy hasn't learn to mount them yet hehe. They sure are interesting looking :D
+Humble Little Homestead Thanks! Sometimes I forget they are chickens. They don't ever fight like my other chickens do. They are more like fuzzy little bunnies most of the time lol.
+Chicken Hobby Farm Thank you! Mine aren't show quality, but I think they are a good start. They do have some faults that I plan on breeding out which may take a year or two, but I'm really excited to start hatching babies. I love watching them grow! Thanks for watching =^.^=
+Chicken Hobby Farm Cool, what color? Yeah I know how that is... I get attached too and it's hard to sell them, but I often have to sell a bunch. Mostly roosters, but sometimes hens too :/
+LoneWolfYoitsu Thanks! These chickens are good for cold weather, but they are kind of a high maintenance breed. Because their feathers are kind of like fur when they get wet they get completely soaked and if they get wet in the freezing weather they could get sick and die, so they are good in the cold, but sensitive to rain in freezing weather. Also because they have those big crests (poof on their head) they don't do too well free range as they can't see above them so they can become prey to hawks pretty easily. They are kind of like an ornamental breed. They're also great at hatching and raising babies. They just LOVE to sit on eggs and raise chicks. That's the reason I wanted them in the first place, but I fell in love with them cause they're so friendly lol. Some good homestead chickens for cold weather are Sussex, Orpingtons, Wyandottes, Easter Eggers or Ameraucanas. Any breeds that have small combs (so they don't get frostbite) and are bit heavy, which also helps keep 'em warm should do really well in the cold. Thanks for watching! :)
They're so cute and I've heard they're good brooders for hatching out their eggs or other eggs. Are they strictly pets or will you harvest some? I recently watched a video on Chinese healing soup using Silkies. It's served to women after they give birth or when someone is ill. Personally I think they're too cute so I don't know if I could but so are bunnies. Do you have just one showgirl? She's gorgeous!
+LilBit AtATime Thanks! Yep they are excellent broodies and mommas. They will sit on duck eggs, golf balls, rocks, and even air sometimes lol. They are pets and I'll be breeding these to the APA standard so I'll be hatching a bunch of em and keeping just a few for breeding next year. I've read about the chinese healing soup, but mine won't be going in the pot unless I get a really aggressive rooster. I'll probably be the only one eating it cause I doubt my husband would want to eat the black meat LOL. I have 2 showgirl hens and 2 silkie hens for my breeding program. Glad you like the Showgirl :)
I suppose when they go broody the urge to squat is there. It looked like just black skin in the soup. I typically skin my poultry before making soup. Those Silkies are probably game hen size so you could eat an entire pot on your own or you could make BBQ pulled chicken sandwiches and your man will never see the color. Will you sell hatching eggs in the future?
+LilBit AtATime I skin them too for soup. I bet your right.. he would never notice if I make bbq pulled chicken lol. I will probably sell eggs, but it may be a year or two since there is a fault in some of them that I would like to breed out. They don't all have it, and from what I've read it's pretty easy to breed out in a generation or two. Luckily my boy doesn't have the fault.
great job I started with two silkies going out and getting more this weekend
Your silkies are so cute!! The showgirl is adorable! I've never heard of a naked neck silkie before!
+Farmer MeeMaw Thanks! Goofy little showgirl is sitting on eggs even though the boy hasn't learn to mount them yet hehe. They sure are interesting looking :D
At first, I thought there was something wrong with the one with the naked neck....learned something today.
+Midwest Gardener They're interesting looking little boogers. Happy you were able to learn something from my video. I love learning :)

+Hugh Janus Thanks Sir Hugh. They're kinda like the poodle of the chicken world lol
Sunny Hilltop Very fancy!

+Humble Little Homestead Thanks! Sometimes I forget they are chickens. They don't ever fight like my other chickens do. They are more like fuzzy little bunnies most of the time lol.

+Sunny Hilltop I could get some really good ones but I would have to sell the ones I already have. And I've grown attached to them
+Chicken Hobby Farm Cool, what color? Yeah I know how that is... I get attached too and it's hard to sell them, but I often have to sell a bunch. Mostly roosters, but sometimes hens too :/
beautiful birds. maybe thats the kind of chickens I need here in Montana. Do all those feathers keep them warm?

do the showgirls always get the small silkie stature
do you sell hatching eggs?
what is the youngest age a silkie can lay an egg?
I've heard six months, but mine usually start laying between 8 and 10 months old.
Tracy Bickford Where can you get silkie eggs
is pet chickens allowed in Arizona ? because I have a pet chicken and she rarely makes noises
+TheMidnadarkness If you live out in the country probably, and if you live in town I don't know cause each town has their own rules.
can we eat them?🤔😉
