Yes, the harmonica was his so-called "calling card"....what he had perfected before he was a teen. I was fortunate to have seen him as "Little Stevie Wonder" at the Michigan State Fair in 64. He's one of a kind... SUPER talented!!!!

Stevie Wonder was one of the first to come out with that hard funky keyboard sound which alot of R&B artists used in the late 70's and even more in the 80's. He was the granddaddy of that sound, that is for sure. After this song, he came out with SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE, an incredible masterpiece, easily one of the best albums of the 70's.

This is the time period where Stevie Wonder was running on 8 cylinders on every hit song and album. From 1972 to 1977 he was untouchable. They were backing up the Grammy truck like every year for him back then. Classic greatness

Stevie Wonder is one of the most innovative musicians/singers that came out of the 60's/70's/80's and on. His library of music is incredible and you cannot go wrong playing any of his songs. My two favorite albums are Talking Book, and Innervisions. Every song is a gem. Please do react to more Stevie Wonder, you will not be disappointed.

As is evident from this track, Stevie is the Groovemaster Supreme! I'm hard pressed to think of anyone else from his era whose work was comparable to his. Yes, Marvin Gaye, Yes, EW&F; I even put him above MJ for overall creativity because he wrote most of his songs. Innervisions is just one of his masterpieces - world class excellence on multiple levels.

So many other recording artists, old and young carry their artistry through Stevie Wonder’s influence, the greatest living musical genius’ of the last 50 decades.

Genius with sound and instruments, prolific songwriter (see the many albums and single hits suggested below), social activist (Dr. King's national holiday) spiritually aware ("Innervisions")...his songs cover everything in the human experience. From his 1st appearance on the Lawrence Welk show (about 16 yrs old with harmonica) to playing 2 keyboards and a synthesizer during live performances - "Legend" covers it.

I love so very many of his songs but this is still probably my favorite. It came out when I was in grade school and I had just gotten this combination FM AM radio and cassette deck recorder portable thing for Christmas and third grade and one of the features of it was that you could dub directly from the radio onto cassette tape and so I would listen to the radio and when one of my songs came on especially something new that I didn't know if I would hear again or not I would punch record and build up these compilation tapes basically and I captured this one on it. And I played it over and over and over and it was on the radio a whole lot at that time.
Everything about this song totally slays me. Everything. And especially, being a musician, I just appreciate so much his ability to not only play but just to put songs like this together. Every layer in this song is pure fire but that Moog bass just gets me every damn time. It's just so amazing and funky and percolating in between spastic fits of just totally going off and it works against that incredible drum beat so well and the piano and then it plays back and forth off of the long harp solo at the end so well. And I love the way he slurs his words like he's borderline drunk. I've also thought for a long time that it's really poignant the fact that some of the lines in here about he wishes he could see these women dancing he wishes he could see them in the raw under the stars above and so forth, the fact that he's blind just adds a certain something to the effect of that.

4:03 interestingly enough, this is the *only* Stevie Wonder song to use a diatonic harmonica! (The kind normally associated with, say, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, or Little Walter.) Most of the time he’s playing a chromatic harmonica, which you can hear Stevie play on songs like “If It’s Magic” or even the harmonica solo on Elton John’s song “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues”.

Stevie was just as good on harmonica as he was on keyboards in my opinion-happy sounding licks on the take-out! 6:33, yes, Asia, According to Motown studio pianist Earl Van Dyke, "Stevie picked up stuff from us so fast, by the time he was 18, he didn't need us on his records no more--he could play it all himself!

Boogie on Reggae Woman features Wonder's signature harmonica, although not his usual chromatic type but instead a diatonic A-flat "blues harp." The song is also notable for Wonder's pulsating Moog Synthesizer bass-line. The lyrics are designed as a dialogue between "nice" and "naughty" intent, including the introduction to his harmonica break, which incorporates Wonder's casual but repeated question, "Can I play?". Following the conclusion of the vocal, the harmonica is reprised for the remaining seventy seconds, concluding the last thirty bars of the tune, to the fade. The song peaked at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached #1 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart for two weeks between 1974 and 1975. Don't be fooled by the title: the song doesn't contain any reggae or boogie music, but rather R&B with funk and blues influences.
