Our fruit and vegetable prices fluctuate a lot because our climate is so variable from year to year in the many large growing areas. For example, we might get a major flood in the Darling Downs in Queensland where most of our lettuce, cabbage, pumpkins, broccoli come from and this will result in a shortage and higher prices. Conversely, the Burdekin area where most of our tomatoes are grown might experience prefect conditions and we end up with a market glut and tomatoes will be dirt cheap. Then other areas will be in drought at any given time. It's like this every year, all across the country. As a whole because of our unique isolation, we don't have a lot of fruit and vegetable diseases that other countries do so we have strict quarantine laws and subsequently don't import much produce making our supply and subsequent prices highly variable due to climate. Yeah-nah = Yes, I hear what you're saying, but no.

Cyclones and bushfires too. Also, tragically for growers, when a good harvest is spoiled by last minute heatwaves or solid rain downpours, splitting fruit and causing it to go bad before it can even get anywhere near the shops, or mouse/locust plagues. If you have a green thumb it's easy in most places to keep your menu stocked (with se kind of produce) and for swapping with others. Lots of nice canned fruit but the very best export quality is exported..

Drive through bottle o is actually very handy (even though I'm not a drinker) you don't have to find parking and they are also quite prevalent...you can also buy softdrinks (at inflated prices), chips and ice...so it's good to grab some eupplies for an outdoor barbecue or camping/fishing trip where you fill your esky (cooler) with ice to put drinks and food.

Drive thru bottle shops (originally only connected to pubs) have been around for ages. 40+ years ago they mostly sold cartons of "tallies" or "stubbies" and it was very convenient to have the guy load it straight from the fridge into the car boot for you. Back then a carton was less than $20. Nowdays people still buy cartons of beer, but six-packs, single bottles of wine, champagne, spirits are popular too - especially if you're on the way to a party or BBQ.

the purpose of a drive through bottle-o is to eliminate the need for parking. most normal people are in and out of a bottle shop in 5 minutes. so rather than parking somewhere walking to a bottle-o buying your grog and lugging it back to the car. you just drive in park at the doorway walk in get what you want, pay for it and go.

For many of us going after the cheapest fuel is almost second nature. We won't go to the nearest servo, we'll usually go to the one 5 Km away because it's ten cents a liter cheaper, in a tankful that can be a lot of money.

As for fluctuating prices (esp fruit & veg) maybe the EU can negotiate more stable prices than Australia? I really have no idea.
Good Friday is only a big deal bc it's a public holiday. Same for the Queen's Birthday (or King's as it'll be now). These holidays are hangovers from a more religious & traditional time - but if they were removed, there'd be riots bc Aussies love their public holidays 😂

Prices will vary from state to state.I live in country Victoria and have never paid more than $1.83 for petrol. The prices fluctuate because of fluctuations in international oil prices and currency exchange rates. Independent petrol stations are cheaper than the big internationals like BP and Shell. If you visit Perth, go to King's Park and look down on the city, take the treetop walkway, take a ferry up the river from Fremantle to Perth and then take the train back along the coast. Go up to the hills - maybe visit Mundaring Dam. Go to the beach (March isn't the best for weather, but the beaches are spectacular - dazzling white sand that stretches for miles. Cottesloe is perhaps the best, though Port beach is my favourite) . If you have the time, go up to Ningaloo and see the whales, or Monkey Mia and meet the dolphins. Or down to timber country in the South-west (Pemberton, Manjimup etc). Enormous eucalypt trees. Enjoy your trip!

Technically, Queen’s (now King’s) Birthday was once Empire Day, when there was such a thing. The name was changed quite a few decades ago. The reason for the difference between states is because each state gazettes their own public holidays, and there are really only two truly national holidays - Australia Day and ANZAC Day. Personally, I’m not averse to ditching Australia Day and replacing it with something more inclusive - but that’s just my opinion.

The price of food went up due to inflation but the news says prices may ease back to normal, and some foods (veges) have already gone back to normal price levels (I think the veggies prices went up more from natural disasters...things have settled and supply is returning)...but generally the one thing I find expensive is rent...rent was expensive before the last few years but now it actually scares me.
We were fortunate to inherit my grandparents house a year before covid hit...we were paying $1600 a month for a 3 bedroom house...the washing machine was outside as it didn't have a laundry...we had an opportunity to move into my grandparents house when our lease ended so we left...the rent for that house now is around $2000 per month(if you can even find anything).

I'm not on a huge income and I don't find the prices problematic. Natural gas is probably the worst, but fuel isn't an issue as I drive sparingly and ride or walk alot anyway. I cook my own food, and don't have any dramas as I follow a largely pescatarian diet which has loads of veges. If you eat a lot of beef or lamb it might hurt, but chicken and pork are quite stable too.
Some people might consider it boring, but I just find all the bells and whistles that other people need are just not that important to me.

In 1999 Australia had a Republic Referendum. There were two questions when there should have been three questions. First, we were asked if we wanted a republic (and the majority would have answered, 'Yes') BUT our conservative, Liberal Party Prime Minister, at the time, John Howard, complicated matters.( He liked the way things were regarding Government.) So sly Johnny threw in a second question -- not apart from, but with the first question - 'And what TYPE of Republic do Australians want?' And that question derailed the referendum because not much attention, thought and debate had been given to that. People were scared off and voted, 'No'. The NEXT time we have a referendum on this issue the result will be very different !
In Oz we did not have a holiday exactly on the past Queen's birthday but whenever each state decided that. In Victoria it was in July on the second Monday, creating a long weekend in the middle of the year when we don't have many public holidays. It has become the first weekend of the snow season in the mountains. I was astounded to find out that England did not have a holiday at all for the Queen's Birthday. It will be interesting as to what will happen to that birthday holiday now that there is a new King Charles.

The historical Maritime Museum is there also. An unusual place to visit as it is not touristy, is the Pinaroo Cemetary in the northern residential suburb of Padbury. It is a large Bushland and Lawn cemetery with kangaroos happily mingling with the cemetery visitors. Unlike the bored roos at the Perth Zoo that are unimpressed with tourist pellet feeding. Oh and there are red algae blooms around the hotter months which can cause temporary paralysis if you don't properly cook the shellfish and fish you catch (or drink a bit too much water when swimming)

Or theres the nah-yeah, which is "nah, i know, but yeah this is how it turned out". Something like "i heard old mate screwed you over with X", "oh really? Yeah, nah! He's alright". Means it sounded fishy what he was doing, but he ended up being ok. You usually agree or disagree with the first part of a sentence and then clarify how you felt about it. It's just faster.

And people got used to a certain lifestyle however with covid, natural disasters and world markets/ economics things are getting tough and people are feeling the pressure. Most of Australian slang takes a word, chops off most of the last syllables, and adds an -o or -y on the end.
I think Drive through bottle-os are for when you're a guest or when you're going to camp. You pick up some alcohol on the way to your destination. Always nice to bring some wine for your host, or if it's a relaxed bbq or party, some beers to share.
The UK relationship is really good on a personal basis. In practice our governments don't co-operate a lot, since we operate in different hemispheres, and militarily speaking we felt abandoned during WW2. Gallipoli in WW1 is when white Australians stopped identifying as UK expats living in our own colony, and stopped calling Britain 'The Motherland'. That campaign turned us all into Australians.
But practically speaking most white Australians have UK heritage, and a majority have UK relatives. A lot qualify for UK passports through their parents (Hence all the Aussies in London.) While we acknowledge our ancestors were colonising bastards that did a lot of harm, we overall have good vibes about Britain. But on the flip side Brexit is really really sad, and it's hard to see our 'family' eating itself. It's the biggest act of self harm I've ever seen a nation do to itself.
Especially since we've benefitted a lot from European migrants post WW2. We're proud of our multicultural paradise... and then fall ourselves for the same old lie that new migrants are stealing our jobs. New migrants can certainly depress wages, but in the covid world shortage of workers, low wages aren't such a problem, since there are less workers than demand for them.
A lot of us want to move to a republic, but we're really cautious about breaking a democratic system that has worked well overall for us. We don't want to inadvertently become like the :USA. I think we should be moving to an 'Australian Democracy' to replace the Constitutional Monarchy, instead of an 'Australian Republic'.

As far as the relationship to England, I think it is divided mostly along generational lines with older Aussies feeling more of an attachment. That is just my view, I could be wrong.
We had a referendum, I think it was the year 2000 on whether or not to become a republic and it was soundly beaten in every state, the Northern Territory may have voted yes.
There was an extremely well run, divide and conquer campaign run by monarchists but it was very easy as those in favour of a republic were very ignorant of what it even meant and were perhaps very divided before the campaign.
