2023 Garden Tour: Living Walkways Gardening

  • After six years of growing a big garden here on the farm, I've finally found the method for me - something that allows me to have a huge garden with (almost) NO weeding....living walkways are a game changer. I've tried so many other methods and they just didn't work for me. I've tilled and hoed between rows, I've done heavy mulching, I've done lasagna gardening Charles Dowding style (still got soooo many weeds) - for me, this method is it. I'm sticking to this because it allows me to have a huge garden and grow a substantial amount of food without being married to my farm all summer. We like to do other things in the summer too aside from gardening so spending hours every day weeding isn't something I'm willing to do.
    I don't remember where I bought my weed barrier or I'd link it. The pole beans I mentioned are Blauhilde from Baker Creek - my absolute favorite pole bean that thrives here in 6b every year.
    If you have any more questions about anything I have planted, just ask in the comments and I'll try to answer.
    Also, my blue dress is from my favorite Christian-owned capsule shop. I've been purchasing one or two items from their monthly collections for about a year now and I finally have a capsule wardrobe I love! www.neuflora.com/?ref=W4OeJ

    I planted clover in the rows of my garden and the honey bees and bumble bees absolutely love them. When it gets too high, I weed eat it down and it grows right back. It also keeps nuisance weeds out, like sticker bushes.

    Are you prepping your soil at all before laying the cloth! Love this! I’m a busy mom too and gosh I would love time to weed 😂💗💗 but I don’t!!

  • @UntilItIsFinished
    @UntilItIsFinished ปีที่แล้ว +3

    As a 10 year professional landscaper, I recommend doubling up the cloth.
    Two layers adds a lot of life, and prevents exposure tears from casual walking on the material.
    Also, mulch will stop the material from breaking/aging prematurely due to sun exposure.
    Cool video. Have a good season.

    I have a comment about your garlic…if you trim off the scapes ( which are edible) you allow the plant to focus more on bulb growth. Wait until the leaves start turning brown before harvest. You should get bigger bulbs.

I just weedeat it, and honestly, I don't mind, and this is my first year of not worrying if every piece of grass is gone. It's a game changer and less stressed! I am going to try tour washing detergent also! I didn't like the clumpy home made kind, and I didn't have essential oils and I love what you did. So excited to try that!

    This is brilliant. I really believe that this is a way to make a garden sustainable as one ages. Weeding can do a number on both your body and time budget. I get so many weeds in my littlest no-dig bed, but my garden that I covered in this landscape cloth requires very little weeding (it is covered in mulch however). Thank you for sharing. I missed it--but did you say you tilled before laying down the cloth? Or do you simply put the cloth over the grass?

    • @HopewellHeights
      @HopewellHeights  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This ground was already prepped earlier in the winter with lots of manure so it did not need to be tilled!

  • @krislynnpaisley2903
    @krislynnpaisley2903 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do you still water your plants? We live in Iowa where people don’t normally water, we do the wood chip method, would you recommend putting woodcuts or straw over the fabric to keep water in the soil?
    Also! If you have ducks or rabbits you can use a tractor in between the rows for fertilizer(rabbit and duck poop can go straight in the garden)/bug eaters (rabbits won’t eat bugs but ducks will eat anything) / and grass mowing (ducks and rabbits both do a good job)

  • @sewfun2263
    @sewfun2263 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    So intrigued by this method!! I’m curious, do you do anything before you lay out the weed barrier? Or just do it over the grass and let that kill it? We have a lot of wire grass that is crazy resilient.

    • @juliabrown5948
      @juliabrown5948 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was wondering the same... It looks like it's nice clean dirt under the fabric... Did you weed before you laid it? Or put down cardboard or something?

    New to your channel. Lovely property. The living walkways is a great idea but i would be concerned about vining plants, or others that will want to grow into the walkway..seems like you would not be able to cut the walkway down at that point and it would grow out of control. How do you desl with that?

    • @HopewellHeights
