I met my husband in SWTOR, and my maid of honor was also from the game. We livestreamed the wedding so our guildies could come! So yeah, MMO's have been a huge part of my life, too!
(Nowadays, my husband and I casually play GW2 together, and still run a guild in SWTOR).
    Thanks for another fun video!!

Lara, your MMO history (from starting with Habbo and RS to not being able to afford WoWs sub fee, then playing pretty trashy F2P ones instead and ending up in Tyria) is eerily similar to my own experience. I guess us early 2000s kids had very similar childhoods in that regard. Thank you for sharing!

My relationship with mmo games is akin to that of a man covered in gasolines relationship with fire, but if there is ANYONE whose mmo takes I trust, it's Lara 100%

Guild Wars 2 - it's Habbo Hotel but with dragons and tree people 🤭
Super comfy video as always, Lara! ^^ MMOs are such a nice third thing to bond over with people, with the additional benefit that you can actually do so inside the thing itself!

First MMO was Guild Wars Factions! I fondly recall how the original Guild Wars made me feel, how immersed I was to the point my imagination was enthralled with the idealistic lifestyle of a ranger, living in almost zen-like harmony between man and nature and every shot felt significant. Nowadays I'm often imagining alien races/lifestyles in the future of Star Citizen, or what shenanigans my catboy can get up to in Final Fantasy XIV, or even the story of my Star Trek Online crew. Guess it's safe to say that I enjoy making character stories in MMOs even if I have no intention to roleplay. It's just fun to get lost in good worldbuilding and experience it vicariously through someone who's a part of it.

Thank you for making this video, Lara. You and I had a very similar upbringing with MMOs.
My first online game I’ve ever played was Gaia Online (if you really want to call it a game). Everyone was talking about RS and WoW, but our family computer was terrible and my parents were absolutely not gonna give me money for a WoW sub. I then explored a bunch of free, low spec MMOs; I stumbled upon MapleStory, and it was awesome. I played MS for much of middle school.
Once I started high school, I heard about GW1. My family finally got a computer upgrade, and I had saved up enough allowance to buy GW1. This was probably my first true MMO experience, and the sheer amount of joy I had exploring Tyria with guildies is something I’ll always fondly look back at. Of course, that transitioned to GW2, and I’ve been playing it since launch. It’s still one of my favorite games, and I love watching GW2 content creators such as yourself.
Thanks again. This video gave me a rush of nostalgia, and confirmed that I wasn’t alone in my MMO journey.

I love this video. While I played MMOs as a solo player for such a long time, I do (now) understand how much the social aspect plays a role in these games. I do wonder if all Dutch people have the same experience (habbo --> runescape --> maplestory). Especially the last one brings back so many memories (Slime King PQ)

Nice video! GuildWars: Prophecies was my first MMO, still have the box here somewhere. Also played Factions then a bit of Nightfall and we went to WoW after that. Probably tried out every MMo that was released after that for a long time. A MMORPG Nomad. Been playing FFXIV for the last 2 years. And waiting for Ashes of Creation becasue I want to explore a new World with depth and cool systems.

Thx for this video, loved it, my first mmo was also habbo when I was 7-8 years old, I also played perfect world and since then I tried pretty much every f2p mmo I could find, finding Gw2 was truly special, spent a lot of hours on tyria, now I'm enjoying the grindy sandbox of albion, where I don't actually play the game but just flip the market, having fun tho because I was looking for that kind of game rofl

I'm glad FFXIV started sponsoring streamers. It's a good game, and the more people know about it, the better (I'm a long-time FFXIV and GW2 player). And yes, the free trial with three expansions is just insane.
P.S. My first MMORPG was Lineage II during its classical years (2004-2006), and compared to it, each and every MMO seemed insanely easy (I haven't tried the original EQ, though). I remember how euphoric I was when my vanilla WoW character got rewarded with quest gear (gear was extremely difficult to get in La2) or when I found that support classes were able to level solo.

RuneScape was my first love. As a kid, I used to ride my bike to the library, play 30mins, then ride to another library to play for another 30 mins. Now that I'm an adult, I get paid to play RuneScape...whenever my boss isn't looking.

@@tnnetnattninuttn4627 Last time I checked a couple of years ago now, DAoC was still alive, though the subscription was very high. It was great, I think it might have been the inspiration for GW2s WvW. As you had a 3 way PvP with keeps and towers to capture. Also who ever had majority control of WvW unlocked a PvP dungeon that was high level content. Always fun parking a stealth character in there when your realm had control, ready to reap havoc when you lost control. 😈

I've had such amazing experiences with mmorpgs, I remember the era where we had SO MANY NEW ONES coming out.. and now it feels so dry, each time I want to find a new mmorpg there's really nothing available now. Its always the exact same top 10 list, and either I've played them to a point where I've had my fun, or that its just the type of mmorpg for me.. What's worse is that the bigger mmorpgs are so deep into expansions that starting new on them doesn't sit right.. GW2 is great to jump back into as always, but craving something new is hard when the market is so damn dry right now.

But every now and then I see people playing it doing dungeons and raids and really feel like giving it another chance

My first mmo was Maplestory, which I played with my siblings. It was great for the social aspects of exploring a seemingly endless world, but because level grinding was so tedious, we all eventually stopped playing in favor of other multiplayer games like Terraria.
But then my oldest brother introduced me to Elite: Dangerous and Guild Wars 2, and I instantly fell in love with both! >:)

mmorpg's in general especially if you keep updating and adding new content
are also just the best in overall value vs price
there is just so much to do and that for ether a one time payment like gw2
or subscriptions like wow and ffxiv is worth it alone
especially with the current standing of games where some games can be played for barely a few hours to reach the end and cost 70$

My experience with MMOs was very similar. I played Runescape because I couldn't afford WoW and also cause my sister and best friend were playing it (and I ended up being a member for a while in that game actually! Was worth it at the time). Then my friends would browse lists of free MMOs and I'd play a ton of those. We'd play for about a month together and then all of us would drop off whatever shitty free grind-fest MMO we had chosen. Then a few weeks would go by and we'd play some other shitty free MMO together. It was a friend group thing for us.
Then my friends actually got into WoW, and I tried it and found it to be the most boring game to have ever been created, especially because I was playing Guild Wars at the time and I *really* care about storyline to keep me interested in games. WoW, having basically no storyline at the beginning that I could find, was just incredibly boring and even with friends I couldn't handle the grind.
Now, as an adult who has money, I play Guild Wars 2 mainly, and have dabbled in FFXIV (although god damn the start of that game sucks, sorry sponsor, fix your base game. I have since gotten past ARR at least so I'm on the up and up), SWTOR, and other games. It's the community experience that really gets me. i really do make friends in these games. My Guild Wars 2 guild is a family to me nowadays, even though I don't know anyone's real names lmao.

  • @ThiVasss
    @ThiVasss 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Even though I am not a huge MMO player myself, I do think that an MMO could be the best game possible. They could offer almost everything you might want in a game.
A continuous singleplayer storyline with a world and lore to match it. Singleplayer and Co Op experiances like dungeons. Competitive PvP gamemodes. Casual and Hardcore modes. Constant evolving content and world. Massive events and amount of players. Communities within guilds. Player progression and customization.
Most importantly you should be able to choose what you want to do and play that as your main game. Gw2 is as close to that as possible, but I feel we COULD do better and make a perfect MMO game. A game that fits every player and every style.

I love MMORPGS. Despite all their flaws - their grindy systems, their lower difficulty compared to single players or their repetitiveness at some times... It's all worth to be part of a vast new world together with people. To form communities and to feel like you're part of this magical adventure with hundreds of other players and (potential) friends.

MMOs were great when they were social by necessity, now they're optionally social.
Most people play them while listening to a podcast or watching a movie, all while sitting in 40 discord servers with plenty of people to talk to, never even realizing the game they're playing has a chat box. A lot of progression has been devalued in many MMOs as people realize the gear grind is all there is anymore. Reputation is no longer a important or considered in modern MMOs. The fun is optimized out of every patch of every title (not just MMOs), and it's become stale.
There may be no going back to the golden age of the genre, but maybe we can have a renaissance of sorts with some promising upcoming titles. Personally, I've got my hopes in Monsters and Memories, but love seeing new projects pop up here and there. More variety is good for the genre in totality, and I hope I'm around when the next big thing shows up.
