I feel sorry for the guy. He's obviously being bullied. THAT'S the issue. I think his self esteem is so low that he can't he think straight about his options. I'd leave, claim constructive dismissal based on the bullying (long term) and find a job where people respect him.

It's a clear case of false imprisonment which he should have reported to the police at the first chance he got. This isn't something for legal hour on a radio show.

Being held back in a meeting with your employers for five minutes longer than you wanted to be is not going to result in any action from the police.

Locking the door to have a private meeting in the workplace isn't unheard of, refusing to let someone leave is out of order but five minutes isn't much of a delay. If this was a one-off in isolation then let it go, but sounds like there may be more to this, especially if the telling off was for something unproven.

Why not focus on the bullying?

This is very unclear. There might be surrounding issues about prison security.
At the same time, there would need to be a look at his disciplinary record, the kinds of things they were hauling him up on. And all the interactions that might amount to bullying, and the duration of his feeling harassed in this way. Did it suddenly begin, say with a change in personnel, or is there a toxic working environment endemic to the Prison Service? What is clear is that he is not fit for work now, and that any return may have to be adjusted for, as in say a staged return.
He does have to think though as to whether he can continue in the job for the next five years before retirement, if, given the strain he's now under, that looks like a realistic prospect.

Some of these unions are not fully helping their members. Week after week we hear confused callers. Barnett sometimes advises them to find someone else higher up in the union, but people don't know where to go.

More to this story, suitably confusing and one sided. Location of locked room, is that to keep him in or prisoners out and staff safe ?

What the hell is this guy saying

He’s probably planning to stay “on the sick” long term, with full pay, until he retires?

Tbh some eployers will be perfectly happy with that.
They rather let you do that instead of dealing with firing you, a possible lawsuit (because now you've got no job to lose), ... a proper union rep should know how to navigate this.

I wouldn't blame him for doing that with the way he's been treated.

This guy sounds like a nightmare. Locked in a room for 5 minutes and wanting to sue and now off work ‘on the sick’ he sounds just like one of ‘those’ employees. Probably going to try and stay on the payroll on ‘the sick’ for as long as he possibly can.

Bloody hell why are we paying a bed wetter to look after prisoners. If that is the most stressful event of his career as a prison guard he’s got off light. Typical sponger wanting to be paid out for doing a job they are clearly not capable of doing.

He shouldn't be working in a prison by the sounds of it
