Some of my extended German family fought this horrible war. Love to them all, from America. Wish we never went to war with each other. Wilhelm Friedrich born December 11, 1880. Kill in action on the 26 of Aug. 1917 Friedrich born September 5, 1884. Kill in action on July 28 1918 in France. Johann Gottfried born August 6, 1886. Went missing in action on the 30 of August 1914. All three brothers never to return back home -Love from your American cousin.
I'm currently reading Sergeant York's Autobiography and it's amazing how he never wanted to kill, but only did when he was forced to. He saw the Germans as brothers and never as enemies and I love that about him.
@@VloggingThroughHistory Good sir, thank you for the video. As a German American who had family fought on both sides, this is touching. What is the name of the song?
If you put the Decendents of Sgt. York and those 132 whom he SAVED as well as the few soldiers who helped him with the prisoners there would be a cast of THOUSANDS if not TENS OF THOUSANDS!!!
Hi, Chris, that was another very interesting and emotional video. Talking about wars and casualties it is easy to forget that those fighting were people with families, this helps to remind us of that.
I love how your videos like this take WW1 from being shamefully ignored to having a personal feeling. You have one of the best approaches to this kind of coverage that I've seen.
I didn't know much about The Great War until I found your Channel. I've been binge watching your Playlists over the past few weeks. This video is exceptional with your research and interpretation the battle and the military men & boys. The number of casualties is not just a number, but individual men that fought for their own countries whether through volunteering or draft. The personification stories with photos really hits home! I have learned many things between your videos and JD's. At some point it would be amazing to watch and learn from videos with a collaboration of you and JD.
Appreciate the individual stories. Interesting to note that (whether true or not) Ludendorff blamed the failure of the Spring Offensive on the Spanish Flu.
Great video, JD at History Underground and yourself have really upped your content and it’s presentations. Kudos and would love to see you two do a collaboration series on The Civil War.
Young men thrown into the fire. I've visited some civilian cemeteries in Germany. Very well impressed on beautiful and well maintained they are. Good vid that puts respect and duty right where it should be.
Hi Chris, I'm a new subscriber. I truly enjoy your work and I thank you for it. I'm a massive student and lover of all things history, especially military history. I am a former Marine, and much of your content is very relatable to me and some of it is quite moving. After hearing what you said about humanizing the Germans, you are a better person than I. I simply cannot think of them as the same as our boys. They volunteered to fight for their country, but that doesn't mean it was a noble cause. Our dead were far from home fighting for and in another country against invaders. No matter how much you humanize the Germans, those are facts. I have a hard time thinking of them the same way I think of our war dead, because our war dead were caused by them, and our cause was not to fight an ancient enemy and take over their country, if you follow me. Of course there is more to it, but using broad strokes those are also facts. I freely admit I have work to do on how I view things, but I will never see the people who shot at me and killed my buddies as brothers. I hope my view softens as I get older. I see many WWII veterans who are able to speak of the Germans with respect and in some cases even meet those that fought against them. Perhaps that level of maturity, understanding, and wisdom will come to me with age. I can only hope. I'm sure the vast majority of them fought with honor and deserve respect, to a certain degree, but Hitler was amongst the WWI German soldiers, and there's a reason we don't have American cemeteries in Germany. Eisenhower thought they would be defaced or vandalized, and he didn't want our honored dead resting in the ground of the country that was the cause of all the death. In addition, most German cemeteries were not initiated by Germany, as you said in this video, but by the Allies, who routinely buried thousands of Germans with honor. I think time eases hard feelings, and rightfully so. It's difficult to fully articulate my point without sounding contrary or divisive, but I assure you those are not my feelings. Suffice it to say you did an excellent job on this video, and I hope to see many more.
@@VloggingThroughHistory I hope my words didn't come across harshly or negatively, I certainly meant neither. I absolutely respect your views and admire your ability to humanize the Germans, that's my point. I have work to do. Thank you for your kind words, thank you for being worth serving, all of you. You do fantastic work and I sincerely appreciate your videos. Looking through your list of videos is like looking through my brain in terms of what I find incredibly interesting and important. lol
I just need to say again that I love you doing this, I'm pretty sure we're all part history nerds here, but let's be real, most of us wouldn't take this big journey you have taken and with a serious educational effort that easily crosses country borders. Dankeschön. Means a lot. 🇩🇪 🇺🇸 🇫🇷 🇪🇺 ! I personally feel like even in germans school we learn more or less sometimes we were the Bad evil guys. But as you said some of them were just patriotic young men who died way to early. Its sometimes hard to feel patriotic here because some germans see patriotism as some kind of national Bad ideology.. My grandfather never had a father because he fell on the eastern front in WW2 and the brother of my grandmother died at the age of 17 on chrismas day on the ardenne offense when the war was already lost. Anger at the People in control but love and respect for our ancestors who had no choice other then fight for our Vaterland. RIP. My other grandfather was captured by SS men because he helped some people. They managed to steal SS unifroms and a motorcycle and were able to flee in the hands of the US troops and the end of the war. Because my grandfahter spoke german, english, and dutch, the US soldiers then made him work for them. Later on he became one of the dutch ambassadors in germany because of that.
Love the on site content! Have you considered doing a series on the pacific theatre in WWII? I can only imagine the logistics would make it very difficult to say the least.
I appreciate the music you use when showing the archival footage, as opposed to the action movie symphonies you usually hear with historical documentaries. It adds a touch of class and respect for the lives lost. Strange how so many documentaries reflect the Propaganda of the WW1, making it seem like it was cool thing to be a part of.
Thank you for these videos about WW1. Before you started posting these types of videos related to WW1, personally I only had average knowledge of the war since WW2 seems to overshadow WW1 (at least where I’m from). While my great grandfather wasn’t in any of the units you’ve covered thus far, it gives me more of an understanding of what he could’ve gone through.
He did. Me myself stumbled a lot of times over this typical German Wortmonster while doing charity work in Novembers for them when in service, asking citizens for a donation for “…”. Cold mouth, fast tongue. 😂
Another informative vid, Chris! Good job! I've always had an interest in WW1 as my grandfather was a Doughboy in France. (If you haven't done so already, I can recommend reading "Sons of Freedom", by Geoffrey Wawro.)
My grandfather, Jim Phipps, fought as supply line help in WWI. Was gassed by the Germans and survived. He had great respect for the Germans and is said to have two comments about the war. 'The Germans will be wearing leather shoes within six months(after the war).' 'The drill Sergeants sent with the men they trained were often killed by friendly fire to the back of the head from the men they trained.' On this last remark, is it true? Is it also true, that drill sergeants were never sent with their men after this war?
1:26 The best laid plans of mice and History Guys. You obviously didn't intend this video to be one of your reaction videos, but fate cruelly intervened.
I love learning and studying World War I, but I can't even begin to imagine what those young soldiers were experiencing during those four brutal years. All they met was death and destruction for no tangible results. Both sides devastated by new technology as they attempted to fight a war like how past wars were fought, which caused a bloody stalemate that no one would have ever expected. Belleau Wood was one of the final nails in the coffin for the Germans. All those soldiers lives wasted by the orders of military commanders who saw a "quick victory" in sight. They were lied to, over and over again for four years. This was what woke the world up after the 19th century. No longer would wars feature glorious infantry and cavalry charges. No longer would armies wear brightly-colored uniforms. Britain, France, Germany, the United States, Italy, and and all other countries prayed that a war as brutal as World War I would never happen again. Yet, they had ignited a fuse that would eventually lead to a war even more devastating.
I have been to that cemetery and I was told that the reason all the Jewish headstones were so oddly placed was because during WW2, the German Army had all the Jewish graves dug up and the bodies taken out. A few years afterwards, they were put back in. Have you heard of this action?
What a tragic waste of life. Even now 100 years later the wounds of the war still impact the people who live in those areas and the descendents of the soldiers.
