The fact that you are using L's theme from Death Note confirms that you have all the right answers.
I checked the comments specifically to see if anyone has mentioned the death note music in the background. Kudos 👏👏👏
I find it extremely annoying that sunscreen is so overpriced for the amount that comes in a bottle, when we need to apply so much for it to actually serve it’s purpose. It’s the most essential part of a skincare routine.
Wtf same. One would need to buy them in a complete bulk. Apply too little and it ain't going to work, apply the recommended and you run out in 15days. How tf we going to tackle this one out 😭
There's a good alternative which I’ve been applying. There are uv protective clothes. They are pretty good. Moreover they'll protect you from the pollution as well
At this point, living in your basements is the best sunscreen you'll ever had
Us in high school: “Who is going to use any of this crap in the REAL WORLD?
Us in the REAL WORLD: “This guy is doing THE MOST. We don’t need all that math.”
Lol right. I said the same thing, who is going to do all that math lol
@@krishnajean-louis5075 I mean as long as it covers the skin .. why all that math lol
Then multiply by two if you live in Australia or New Zealand 😆
Absolutely! Our sun here in the top of the South Island is dangerous. I love watching skincare TH-cams review sunscreens and when they talk about about one they simply don't like for any reason other than effectiveness, I giggle a bit. In NZ, if the sunscreen (come on, we call it sunblock) works, then ANYTHING aesthetical, textural, pleasant smelling.... That's a bonus. Just get that block on!
I really like that you did this because I have always wondered how to know how much I actually need to apply and without somebody giving a visual it’s really hard to imagine. So thank you so much for giving this rough calculation.
Hey, could you guys do a video about SPF in makeup? A lot of makeup wearers seem to think it's enough to just put on a foundation that has SPF in it and skip the separate sunscreen.
Angie from hot and flashy just did a short on that subject. It’s a no go - you don’t get enough protection unless you use way too much foundation.
That amount of sunscream + reapplying after 2 hrs..
M broke you guys😭
I use a powder touch-up like Tarte's Set and Protect Mineral Sunscreen Powder. I have had my tube for two months and it is only half gone, even with consistent reapplication. I use mostly Korean sunscreen as my main. I feel Tarte powder is a money saver. I live in Kenya, by the way, the sun is strong here!
@@awembaweawembawe6116 The touch up powder I use is Tarte set and protect, and my main sunscreen is either Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel, or La Roche Posay Anthelios cooling water lotion spf 60. I have a lot more recommendations, if you need them!
And then there’s me using 3 finger lengths because I have short fingers
Also me + my sunscreen comes with a pump so the lines are thinner. Rule of thumb: if you think you’ve applied enough, add more
I don't even use that much since most of the time I'm not even really exposed to sunlight, not even from a window.
I do that cuz I don’t feel like doing all the math so I’ll just do a big amount
@@alyssavanblanckenberg1342 3 fingers just for the face or neck, ears and hands too?
@@javeriaabbasi5957 Definitely just for the face! (Although I use to leftover on my ears). But I use another 3 fingers for my neck.
I really loved this video. Really really loved this. It just seemed very unnecessarily in-depth... but it actually kinda was necessary.
That's the best explanation I've ever heard. Thanks, Dr. Shah!
I’ll definitely be looking casket ready with that amount, but ig so.
Depends on the sunscreen, chemical sunscreens blend in really nicely even after reapplying

Super cool. Thanks for running the numbers
This was so short and easy to understand. Great video.
This math is absolutely insane lol You guys are sooo AMAZING!! Thank you so, so much for all your videos and the information you teach us!!!! 💯💕
What about re-application Dr.Shah?? Lol Can you do another “Investigation Original” on that?
I think they mentioned several times that it needs to be re-applied after 2 hours. But in my opinion, that is only necessary when you are actually exposed to sun light.
You do not have to reapply as much because you put on the correct amount of sunscreen at the start of the day already. I usually start the day with two finger lengths and then throughout the day only use one finger length amount.
You do not have to reapply as much because you put on the correct amount of sunscreen at the start of the day already. I usually start the day with two finger lengths and then throughout the day only use one finger length amount.
Skin cancer council Australia recommends reapplying every 4 hours. Unless you're in the water/doing sports where you will use a towel to dry off water/sweat, then you need to reapply more often as you're taking it off everytime you wipe
Meanwhile I apply double that amount lol
Maybe that's why. 50 ml bottle of sunscreen lasts just 2 weeks for me lol
This is the kind of meticulous answers I look for😍 My OCD is so happy rn. Thank youuu lol
This is what I was looking for.. Clear explanation
Nice! Dr dray took 20 mins to tell us this lol
I was wondering why she made a 20 minute video about wearing sunscreen indoors but it’s actually really interesting and contains a lot of data and studies if you have the time to sit down and watch it
@@bengarnet5989 Yep! She explains WHY you need to do it, instead of just telling you that you need to do it. Love Dr. Dray!
Ain't nobody got time for that 😂😂
I'm just gonna put sun cream on my face until I feel safe 😂
Good! Putting on less than 1/4 teaspoon per day is still better than 0.
Consistency > Perfection
Wow thank you so much for breaking this down for us!!
Awesome short!
Love the death note background music xd
A 1/4 tsp doesn't seem like enough for face AND neck. I definitely apply more than a 1/4 tsp, so I guess I'm well protected.
It does cover the spf tested amount for most people. Lab Muffin Beauty Science did the same test by taping her face and neck and measuring the area of the tape that covered her skin.
@@Cadec247 I use 2 finger lengths just for my face and 1 mire for my neck, ears and hands but I don't really reapply it unless I am out in the Sun all day? Am I well protected!!!
@@joan8656 You're going to need a generous 1/4 tsp to cover your face AND neck area. I, personally, don't measure. I just make sure I have a good layer on. A 1/4 tsp. is not very much. You may need a little more to get good coverage. You don't want the sunscreen to be spread too thin. It also depends on the consistency of your sunscreen. The 1/4 tsp. is just a guideline.
That’s an MD who cares! Love it 💕💕💕💕💕

I was confused as to where was I hearing THAT music... Then I realised it really is the bg of the video.. L theme caught me so offguard lol.✨✨
also as always, informative video.thank you👍🏻
It would be great if you could make a video about how to treat hair loss especially since a lot of people are experiencing it as an after side effect for covid
This is the best way to find out how much sunscreen you need 💜
The nerdiness of it all! I ❤️it!!!👩🏾🦱👨🔬
I appreciate this. Skin cancer runs in my family and I’m always worried I didn’t apply enough sunscreen.
Is this the music from death note?!!!!
This is absolutely amazing! Thanks for clearing this up. I have heard widely varying amounts... up to 1 tablespoon.
As always, love your content.
Please make a video on those LED masks that have different lights and claim to rejuvenate collagen, fade scars and others. Sounds too good to be true 🥺 They cost a lot and I wonder if it’s just a gimmick
They already did a video on it a few days ago. And no, according to them, it's not a scam. It actually works and have been backed up with a lot of research. But it cost a lot of money
Definitely worth it if you get the right one. Just gotta invest and research
@@Selsmittenxo the second one that they featured from Peppy Co is not fancy or anything. But it's good, and affordable. A husband and wife company based in Australia
They're actually backed by science. However, if you can't afford the pricey machines then you'll probably end up wasting your money by buying a fake one.
I just love such informative videos
Wow, I'm so glad I've been using the right amount all along. My sister said it was too much, I love a good "I told you so" moment lol 😆
I've seen other people recommending about 3 finger lengths or even about half a teaspoon. Damn, I guess I've been wearing too much sunscreen then.
I feel like I need more than what he showed.. I also figure you can't really overdo it so better safe than sorry 😂
A lot of people recommend WAY too much. I actually thought I needed a quarter teaspoon for my face and another quarter teaspoon for my neck area. So I’m even using twice as much as needed though it’s still FAR less than mostly people will tell you to use lol
Same lol. I wear ¾ teaspoon for my face and ½ teaspoon for my neck. Sunscreen is the only skincare product that makes my wallet scream. I basically need 5-6 tubes of sunscreen every month.
Thank you Dr Shah! We have been seeing this two finger measuring method for some time, and many of us have been following it, but somehow influencers are trying to push us to using 3-4 finger lengths of sunscreen, like come on.
I think because they think more is better and yes I guess it might be, however, it can be a waste of product and money.
People need to apply sunscreen to more than just the face and neck area though, especially in the months when wearing short sleeves.
3 to 4 fingers would never absorb onto my face omg people need to stop overthinking it lol
@@PinkRose0910 absolutely, but in this case we're talking only about the face and neck area. I use a different sunscreen for the body.

Could you go over the importance of wearing sunscreen for especially darker skin tones. Being south Asian I grew up being told that sunscreen isn’t very important because of our darker skin/melanin. It would be amazing if you could break down the specifics in a future video 🙏🏽

A lot of calculations bro for sunscreen but really appreciated hard core dermatologist u are
I am a new subscriber and I am wowed by your content!! Thank you! Would you please consider doing a review on the LED Masks and if the retail masks are worth buying? 😀
Sunscreen really should be free from health insurance companies. But that will NEVER happen in America.
Why should it happen anywhere? It's not an essential necessity to live. And even if it were, that still wouldn't justify it being free for everyone
@@ENZOxDV9 if ya want the truth I'll tell you that firstly, I have some weird phobia of melanoma because I'm half white. I'm aware black ppl also get it, but the statistics are obviously MUCH lower.
Secondly, it is a preventative cancer measurement backed by medical science. It seems illogical that health insurance will cover the chemo and radiation if melanoma has metastasized and you're fighting for survival but not preventative care. I mean, they KNOW that UV light causes it and you cannot avoid UV even sitting in the shade. Sunscreen is literally the only protection.
Thanks very much for sharing this information 🤗

This was entertaining. And obviously also informative.
I just wanted to ask you guys, could you talk about eyelash growth and serums, do ingredients such as castor oil and petroleum actually grow them? 😊
Dr Dray has a video about them. She said those products don't make the lash grow they just cling to the hairs and give the illusion of thickness. In fact they can be very irritating and lead to more lash loss. There really aren't many good options for lash growth. Latisse and other lash treatments can lead to heavy discoloration and fat loss around the eyes, permanent blurry vision, irritation, and even eye discoloration.
@@epasuxelar4473 Hi, Thankyou for the response, I know some of the serums can actually have detrimental affects as you say however i among other people have seen genuine growth and can see this even when the lashes are not shiny looking however I know there’s not much evidence scientifically supporting this , I’d love to see them go more in depth about this.
The only eyelash serum that works with proper research is Latisse, with the active ingredients bimatoprost. Your Dr needs to prescribe it though. The most common side effect using it is pink eye, which occurs in more than 10% of patients using them. Other effects include blurred vision, eye and eyelid redness, eye burning or other discomfort, and permanent darkening of the iris to brown
Is that L's theme? Lmaoooo nice!
As someone who can barely score any points in math,I'll just rely on slathering myself in sunscreen until I think it's enough😂😂😂
The Death Note music?? I'm in love

The CeraVe hydrating sunscreen (SPF30 - not 50!) is about $14 and 75ml. Using this calculation, it should last you about 2 months!
@@Doctorly But you also need to apply it every 2 hours right? How long will it last then?

The theme from "Death Note"
how often do you reapply sunscreen throughout the day? I know people say every 2 hours. But does anyone really have time or the discipline to be using it 6-8 times a day? PRETTY PLEASE REPLY DOCTORLY
To be honest, I don't always reapply sunscreen as I don't have time. Not to mention sunscreen can be very expensive. I do try to reapply sunscreen as often as I can, but it is difficult. I try not to feel guilty about it because at least I do use sunscreen every day.
When I am in inside and around a window I apply sunscreen 2 times and sometimes 3 times a day. If I am outside a lot I do try to reapply every 2 hours and stay in the shade as much as I can. Try to find a sunscreen with highly photostable sunscreen filters, the newer filters like tinosorb etc are really photostable and will keep protecting you against the sun even after 2 hours however the protection won’t be as high as when you applied it
Damn....the background music for sure brings back memories
Feeling hot because of the sun is one thing, but actually having consistently high or extremely high UV Ray index throughout the year (sometimes even during winter) is something that is unique to both Australia and New Zealand. That's also why they both consistently ranked no 1 and no 2 in highest rate ok skin cancer among countries in the world. After both the poles, Ozone layer above Australia is probably the thinnest
That's probably one of the most useful things I've ever seen regarding sunscreen beyond "use it religiously. "
Loved this. Talk nerdy to me ;)
