These are very useful techniques you can also use on yourself (with some modifications) if you have obstructed or or partly obstructed airways due to a severe allergic reaction, infection, etc. If you're doing the first one on yourself I suggest grabbing just below your lower teeth and pulling the jaw forward. It's worth doing even if it's painful, dislocating your jaw etc is a small price to pay for being able to breathe.
