Ellen's New Stand-Up Special is... Bizarre

- Today we're looking at Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval. It's an incredibly bizarre piece of stand-up comedy history, as half of the special is dedicated to her removal from showbusiness. So in this video, I take a look at the controversial history of her career, her talk show, and the allegations that ultimately brought down the daytime television institution that was the Ellen DeGeneres Show. But 2 years after the show was taken off the air, Netflix has given the maligned Queen of Mean a Netflix Stand-Up Special, and we're gonna take a look and see if it's any good.

Interesting that her argument isn't "I'm not mean," it's "I should be allowed to be mean because I'm in show business"
Girlboss tbh
Your hatchet job work, extrapolating that the presence of a toxic workplace behind the scenes of The Ellen Show meaning that it must automatically be the fault of Ellen herself is just truly not just disappointing, but infuriating. You got the ball started, and you ensured that the press would take the easy way out regarding the situation, and not dig in the right places.
You never considered the idea, nor did the staffers, that Ellen is kept in a silo by people who ensure that she doesn't see or hear about what is going on. Never consider the idea that people are going around, causing the problems, lying and claiming that "Ellen wants this," and then telling her something else, and that it's all the matter of a communication breakdown ensuring that the truth isn't coming to light.
For example, you ever see the My Little Pony episode The Mane Attraction, which features a pop star character who is perceived as snobby and difficult, but it's really her manager causing all the problems, claiming his client is responsible when she isn't, and then telling her something different? That could very well be the case with regards to Ellen.
In fact, it's especially likely when you consider the fact that Telepictures, the WB division that produced the show, has a reputation of being a boys' club, and that they have continuously caused problems on their female-led talk shows that don't happen with their male-centric ones, and always leave the female hosts on the hook. It happened in the past with Rosie O'Donnell, as they produced her show too, and helped lead to the problems regarding the magazines that led to her well-deserved truthful reputation for niceness being destroyed. In short, they did it once, they clearly did it again. "It's easy to pin everything on the lesbian."
You didn't dig or seek to hold those schmucks responsible, and just followed the path they wanted you all to, to pin everything on Ellen. And you all insist "If she just took responsibility for it all and made a real apology, it would all be done." So that's how "accountability" works now? Take responsibility for the things that aren't your fault? Things that you didn't do, but others did, and deliberately framed you for? You can't fight false allegations anymore, but are just supposed to lie down and play dead and never surface anymore, because "it's good for everyone?" All this because of...vibes?
And don't say "a real apology would solve things." If Ellen or anyone else flagellated themselves before you in person, flaying their backs with a cat-o'-nine-tails, you would say "they're not sorry enough, don't listen to them." No matter what, you'll just insist on crucifying them. "Where do I go to get my reputation back?" Nowhere.
Don Henley had it right. "Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down/Kick 'em when they're stiff, kick 'em all around."
I agree with her. People are soft nowadays.
Y’all are just jealous. Go for your goals and stop whining
@misterjones842 she wasn't mean, she was abusive, like what? You're actually stupid
i love how thry all scream “ive been canceled” as they get paid millions for speaking on a giant platform
“I’ve been cancelled” is a much better dogwhistle than “I was found to be a creep/weirdo/abusive, and I’m suffering social consequences as a result, and I REALLY dont like that”
Getting cancelled simply means they suffered the consequences of their actions. Just like "censorship" is now when you fact check or criticize anyone.
These people love talking big game... Especially the anti woke comedians.. "oh I'm so offensive" but the second they get any negative reaction from their boring lazy jokes they turn into the biggest snowflakes imaginable. If people don't laugh, it must be cuz they are snowflakes...

@@pitchforksforRichie 20 mil for that half ass special.
"I'm a victim of being Canceled," she cried to her cheering audience on her 20 million dollar Netflix special.
Hello there. I'm an old person and I want to clear something up. Ellen came out in April 1997 when she had a sitcom, and they canceled her show in July 1998. I was a fan of her sitcom: the tale of a neurotic lady living by herself and her social akwardness getting her into shenanigans, and as Bi person (who thought, and was told they must be gay bc Bierasure was very strong back in the day), AND a neurotic with social anxiety, I was excited to see what sort of hijinks were going to go down after she came out. The Hijinks? Nothing but gay jokes. Every episode. No more jokes about work, her dog, parking, normal every day stuff: just gay jokes and hot guest stars coming in to smooch. I didn’t find her show relatable or funny anymore. And she wasn't the first star to come out in the 90s. K.D. Lang, Elton John, Steven Fry and Rupert Everett were out and proud years before. Heck, I came out before Ellen did in High School. I argue that her show was canceled bc it SUCKED after she came out, not bc she was gay. I watched her other show, but that was more for suburban Moms. I don't think she was a great pioneer for gay rights, but I think she wanted to be. Now she can just rewrite history and claim she was a trailblazer who sacrificed everything to come out, but not really. Not compared to my queer peers who lived in hick towns that had laws discriminating against us and cowboys beating us up and running us off the road and ending some of our lives and parents kicking us out at 16. Roseanne Barr was kissing women in gay bars on her show in 94. I remember it clearly because any hint of representation in the media was very exciting. So, in my opinion, she wasn't canceled for being gay, just canceled for being not funny.
Easily the top comment
Thank you so much for bringing us the context! I guess hollywood thinks us gay people all we think about is trying to get some and making out with people. But honestly they can't even tell decent straight women's stories well without it just divulging into absolute crap revolving around men!! It's really disappointing because there is SO much more to us than who we're in a relationship with!! Also yeah bi erasure is still out there going strong. I am much more attracted to women than I am men, but because I live in a small EXTREMELY conservative town I can only date men. I'd like to transition even one day as well be fully .. "straight" as a ftm person. haha hey, I can dream at least!
Agreed. I watched her show regularly even back when it was called. “these friends of mine“, before they change the name to Ellen. Most of the episodes dealt with her bad luck with men, and then it looked like she was gonna get serious with William Ragsdale.once she came out, the show just wasn’t as funny anymore. That’s the bottom line. It wasn’t funny. So ratings dropped. When ratings dropped, your show can get canceled. That’s how the business works.
💯
Yes, thank you.
Her simplifying it to "I was mean" is so disgusting to me. No, Ellen, you weren't mean. You were abusive to multiple people for years

As a person who speaks English as a second language, I for the longest time (until 17y/o) I thought cool aid was a chemical that had the opposite effect of anti-freeze.
I was pretty confused about people saying cool aid tastes good, I thought maybe it was like how cyanide smells like almonds.
Omg that's really funny 😂 you wouldn't have been far off, antifreeze does actually taste good
@megand12345 I think I also only knew of the existence of antifreeze because of the Simpsons episode where if I'm remembering it right a chimp mother whose kids were separated from her took a liking to Bart and treated him like he was her baby and does not let him leave her enclosure. Homer puts antifreeze into an apricot or peach in order to poison the ape, but Homer ends up eating the fruit himself and I think becomes unconscious.
If you turned this into a stand-up bit, it would be funnier than anything in the entire special
@@myfriendscallmepat true experiences are generally funnier than smug self congratulatory BS.
I started thinking about this too seriously (sorry about that). Kool-aid as opposite of anti-freeze? As in helping something become cold enough to freeze solid? That wouldn't work, cooling appliances use anti-freeze just because of that, so that the liquid stays liquid and can circulate through the pipes and whatever they're supposed to be cooling. Although now that I thought of all this, something like liquid nitrogen or even dry ice would really be a cooling aid..
That being said, I as non-american and non-native english speaker also interpreted it somewhat similarly when I was younger.
Susan Sarandon got dropped from her agency for supporting Palestine and you don't see her moaning like this
Damn, she did? What a legend
Talk about someone who was cancelled. Always for speaking up for things people eventually came around to, like being in a domestic partnership, or having gay friends. She always manages to bounce back, though. She’s a freakin dynamo.
She's also an extremely talented actor and is one of the most beautiful women to ever live. She's got my vote

Why do you hate black people?
Ok Ellen, you make a joke about being “mean” in “mean” show business but the reason you’re hated is that you’re mean to people you perceive are below your status. You pick on people and bully them. Decent humans always treat the “small” people with respect and dignity.
She DOES treat them respect and dignity. You're deliberately missing the point, and you have to know that you're being deceptive. She's not saying "I'm supposed to be mean in show business," she's also saying, "But that's not me."
A male talk host doing far worse than Ellen has ever done would not be under attack the way she is, for things she never did, things that weren't her fault, but were done by the people at Telepictures who siloed her off, told her one thing, and told the staffers another. Exactly like Countess Coloratura in that MPL episode. Never considered that, did you?

It’s crazy how she genuinely doesn’t think she’s done anything wrong
This was my biggest issue with the entire special. If you, as she does, distill the reason why your show got canceled to just you "being mean," you're not being honest with yourself. Your show had multiple organizational failures that would've probably sunk any show. Racism, sexual assault, toxicity in the workplace. The fact that Ellen continued for another 2 years after all the reports came out and amidst investigations from the Production company is better than most could even hope for in that situation.
You think she’s genuine and not just bullshitting?
You realise she's joking right? It's a stand up special bro.
Simply put, Ellen believes her own hype. She is mega-rich, and she thinks the world should revolve around her. She refuses to take any responsibility for why her show was canceled. Classic narcissist. Get over yourself, Ellen.

Hearing that audience is depressing. I fear a room of circle-jerking narcissists having a literal pity party masquerading as a stand-up special
It has to be staged because there’s no way any sane person would give a 2 minute standing ovation for an Ellen standup. I don’t think even her wife would go that far.
if it makes you feel better, I think what they are indulging in is self-congratulating as a way to avoid having to do the work of looking deeper into Ellen's behavior. it's the same with all anti-PC people who love embracing a 'cancelled' comedian -- they want to soothe their own guilt for liking someone problematic (and not understanding why), and they want to feel gracious at the same time. that's why the self-aggrandizing lines in these specials will get a minute long standing ovation. it's all a bunch of lazy jerks who don't wanna do the tiniest work to be nicer

Ok buuuut what kind of shitty restaurant fires someone for chipped nail polish? I'm not defending Ellen, I'm positing that the restaurant boss is also a villain here.
Maybe more because a very rich customer complained but yeah. Cartoon evil boss.
what if her polish got chipped after she got to work, too? I'd be like "either you're an installing a nail tech at this restaurant, or I'm not fired."
In LA, many restaurants live and breathe off of production crews and entertainment execs, so someone like Ellen threatening them would cause an existential panic in any manager.
That is so petty.
If you're a server, chipped nail polish could fall into a customer's food. A thoughtful server would give those nails a wipe of polish remover before going on duty. I'm surprised the manager let her go on duty like that. Not worth losing her job over, but someone needed to talk to her about professional appearance when serving food.

I feel like this bears a lot of similarities to the whole John Mulaney situation. No one’s trying to cancel John Mulaney. Most people still like his older shows. Not that many people are even mad at him. It’s just that he built a brand on being someone we found out he wasn’t. Now his material is different and it’s not what the audience showed up for in the first place. Some of them are going to leave, and it’s better if the comedian in question doesn’t throw a fit about it.
I watched as much of it as I could take(which was about ten minutes) and what I saw was an audience indulging in what I’ve heard described as clapter. It’s whenever audience feels they have to react to a joke but they can’t find the laughter so they applaud instead.
… if that was the case, they wouldn’t have clapped for multiple minutes near end. 😅
@@laurenpunch1053 those were not instances of clapter.. those were regular standing ovations. this is a different thing than that. both were present
At risk of sounding overly PC or whatever, I wish we as a society could stop throwing around the "drinking the Kool-Aid" reference entirely - it suggests people blindly going along with whatever thing but as you touch on here, the people at Jonestown literally had no choice. I remember one particular quote from a survivor that was pointing out how there wasn't a line for people that wanted to drink it and another line for people who didn't. Many of them were directly murdered and injected with the stuff and as the event unfolded, I would guess that, despite what they were forced to do, very few of the victims were "drinking the koolaid" in spirit. (I hope this does not come across the wrong way and that my memory serves me correctly, I'm just oddly passionate about Jonestown for some reason.) Also since you read every comment wanted to add this is not specifically aimed at you (you clearly know all this already)!! Just something I get the urge to bring up whenever the topic arises.
Yeah from what I've heard, it was much, much more of a mass murder than a suicide. And most of the people were sold on the idea of an idealic lifestyle and forced to work and give their money to Jim Jones with no real way of escape. They especially targeted people on social security, the most financially vulnerable people. It was criminal from the start and saying the people were just stupid followers is entirely wrong. They had no idea what they were getting themselves into. Also the leaders were former nazis of memory serves and one woman who was part of the leadership got no time because she acted like she was part of the enslaved victims. It's a bad situation all around but the victims shouldn't be laughed at like idiots that willingly walked off a cliff.
not to say these people weren’t victims, they were manipulated, there was always the vague threat of violence..but to say they couldn’t leave when a group of people did actually leave (even though they were followed and attacked at the plane) seems a bit misguided.
from all i’ve seen and read it was like severe stockholm syndrome, they didn’t have to drink the koolaid but they were made to believe they did have to. There was an opportunity to leave before drinking but a lot of people were too far gone. some were 100% willingly “drinking the koolaid” and that is who the saying is talking about.
except for the children, they killed those kids first and they never had the opportunity or maturity to make that decision on their own. their parents did that to them.
I'm inclined to agree. However, I do think the term serves a strong rhetorical purpose, as i cannot think of an equally emotionally shocking way to say "gleefully participating in your own deception and self-destruction because of a misplaced but strongly held belief"
I think that's an awesome and understandable point. Unfortunately language often gets away from itself, look at "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps", which has reversed meaning from its original intent which was doing an impossible thing. I think it's really cool that you explained it in an accessible and not rude way, and I don't think you should stop or anything. I like knowing something I didn't know about before. I'm just warning you even with the best intentions the change may not happen, though I will stop using it personally.
FINALLY someone who agrees with me... This is actually one of my biggest pet peeves, it's SO disrespectful! These people were held at gunpoint -- prior to that day they didn't even know guns were on the premises! That alone shows the majority did not choose this. People were shot if they ran in the forest. Many were injected from behind and against their will. They were screaming and crying, it's all recorded. It wasnt some jubilee where Kool aid was drunk like wine and everyone was merry.
Jim Jones murdered hundreds of activists who, according to all sources, were doing a GREAT JOB building up and running that village in the forest before he got there.
Ellen's sitcom wasn't very good, and ratings were failing. She came out, and that gave the show a ratings boost. After that, the ratings went back down again, and it was cancelled.
never read Percy Jackson, but I was a Greek mythology kid and Medusa was (and still is) my favorite story ever. it's actually really sad. Medusa was a priestess in one of Athena's temples. she was then s3xually assaulted by Poseidon in Athena's temple, and for some unfathomable reason Athena was like "how dare you, you had s3x in my sacred temple when you were supposed to be a virgin priestess, I'm going to turn you into a horrible monster." when Medusa's sisters, Stheno and Eurayle, tried to help Medusa, they were also turned into gorgons (the name for the hideous beasts with snakes for hair that Medusa had previously been turned into) although they didn't have the whole turning people to stone thing. it's actually a horribly tragic story about a woman who was abused and then blamed for it and punished severely for the actions of a literal god.

Medusa is a really bad metaphor for this cause Medusa is a protector of women and SA survivors whereas Ellen is abusing her power and making people against her cower so to stick with the myth analogy a better one would be Poseidon, Zeus, Apollo. Even so great video👍
that’s only in one translation. its not canon
@@AATCgal to what mythology is just a compilation of stories? Also this one would be canon since it is the original story not a Roman interpretation. The original Greek writers showed the gods as they were while the Romans started the whole gods are all good and awesome. In the original Medusa is a priest of Athena seduced and raped by Poseidon who after experiencing such a horrid fate gets her gorgon form from Athena to protect herself and other women. In the Roman version she had all the blame put on her and was made into a monster. It’s easy to tell which version is which since the Roman’s had a weird quirk of making Athena cruel and ruthless whereas the Greeks saw her for what she was a benevolent goddess among the countless horrid ones. Sorry that this is long and may come off as aggressive I did not mean it that way I’m just really passionate about mythologies and having people um actually me when I have done research is just really annoying (not to say you’re um actuallying me it just came off that way)
She really pulled the “what’s the deal with airplane food” joke
I could watch a whole video essay on Wil Wheatons response to the Elmo thing.
2003-2022. That is a long run for a network to finally cancel based on the host being “mean”. There has to be more to the story. The egocentrism and entitlement in Hollywood is off the charts crazy so it’s not surprising.
The ratings were nosediving.
"Being mean" and creating an extremely toxic work environment are two very different things.
I subscribed. Am I allowed to call you Pat?
Anyways, if I was a restaurant manager and Ellen DeGeneres emailed me and wanted me to fire a server for having a chip in her nail polish, I'm pretty sure I'd just email back and be like "Oh yeah... I totes fired her. She's gone. She's living in a cardboard box now".
Like... is Ellen actually going to check?
Yes! (from what I could surmise from the stand-up set, I think Ellen was a frequent visitor of the restaurant. It was one of the first all vegan restaurants in LA so there actually were quite a few vegan celebrities who would go there regularly)
@@myfriendscallmepat haha. Wow. People like Ellen really live in a different world.
It's worth mentioning that Ellen's joke about the therapist is a joke she straight up stole from Conan. He said the same thing when he was on Ellen a few years ago.
“When I replaced Letterman, it was a train wreck for a while. I remember saying to my therapist, ‘Everyone hates me and wants me to go away,’ and he said that’s just a feeling. And I said, ‘No it’s the cover of USA Today.”
Oh lmao
Pat! May I call you Pat? I know, just your friends do, but I *know* we will be friends after this:
I too am sick to bloody death of "Drink/Drank the KOOL Aid". When you started talking about Flavor Aid, I was "Yes! At last!! Another person said it!" A friend of mine made an album, I think it might have been around 2005/2006 called "Father Cares..." which examined his own family life, which was bizarre and cult-like, and contrasted that with The Jonestown Story. I helped him with audio stuff and sampling, and I found out about the cats of Flavor Aid laced with poison. I also ended up doing voluntary work (audio) for The Jonestown Project - basically that was either taking raw audio from WAV files on a stack of DVD-Rs and cleaning them up, editing them, writing down what they contained. But more fascinating was the two huge cardboard boxes they shipped to the UK for me to do the same thing, only first, I had to dub the cassette and convert *that* to WAV first. Man, I heard some scary stuff, really scary. Their practice "White Nights" were so scary, I (used to smoke back then) would make a basic MP3 rip first, so I knew where I was. I'd take this outside, loaded on my MP3 player and (that year the UK had a seriously bad winter) I would sit on my little smoking bench outside, in the darkness, and that odd silence snow brings, even close my eyes, and listen to this... insanity... that was all laid out on these unmarked cassettes. One minute you're listening to Father give his commentary on Radio Moscow news, the next... well... It could be anything.
But thanks for the Flavor Aid! Top man, Pat, top man!
wow! i can’t imagine listening to all that…fascinated and repelled, bored and scared. just wow. a medal for doing something like this.
That's some wild stuff man. Thanks for your work in documenting the stuff that went down, it's important work to honor what the people there went to and hopefully to serve as warning for all of us going forward.
@@myfriendscallmepat Thank you to the commenters above. As I said I'm disabled, so although I try to comment on YT vids that I like, but typing a long response basically hurts more the longer I waffle and ramble!
Yes, the Jamestown Tapes period was very strange. My wife worried about me listening to this stuff all the time. I had a "rescue folder" on my MP3 player full of cool music that I could switch to when I started feeling weird.
One bizarre effect of these tapes was that I rapidly became able to impersonate Jim Jones! That's just one - and it's sort of funny. But the mental effects have stayed with me. I remember bits of it, and it will pop up every now and then - I don't listen to mad_vicar's fourth album ("Father Cares....") even though I really love it. There's so many samples there (which is how me doing the tapes all started - someone from the Jonestown Project listened to it and it developed from there).
I'm glad I did it though. The FBI had played them all first, (some poor "Agent Cooper" guy in 1979/1980 listening to all this stuff!) but they didn't get the nuance or context. They were purely looking for evidence, or were trying to understand what happened and why, so I do understand their haste. Only if you really *listen* do you get what Jones and "his children" were going through.
There are so many events in Jones' life that contributed to, and if effect caused, the Massacre. BTW, you don't want to listen to that tape. I know curiosity is a big draw, but you come out the other end forever changed to a greater or lesser degree - but you are changed.
Jones managed to burn so many bridges, sometimes accidentally, sometimes through hubris, that he (effectively) ended up being an "Unwilling Dictator" in my opinion. His paranoia, drug use, the praise and love of his followers, and the responsibility of taking care of all these people not only sent him over the edge, but he kept dropping onto ledges, and going over the edge repeatedly. He was broken and burdened. There's no doubt in my mind that everything he did up until *he* moved to Jonestown, was done to try to make things better for the people that looked up to him. But Jonestown became his prison, and his mental hospital.
Okay, that'll have to do for now. Hands going numb. Take good care, and Bright Blessings to you all.
5:18 she shouldn't have been fired, but you're not allowed to wear nail polish in hospitality. Because it can chip off into people's food.
Generally that only applies for the people preparing food not FOH staff. So a line cook isn't really supposed to but for a server or host it's usually okay.
PAT MY HOMETOWN HAD FLAVOR AID. It's the ONLY TOWN i have found atm that has it
Is your hometown called Jonestown? i just gotta ask...
I had it when I lived in Martinsburg WV
Shots fired at the Greek community. Saying Medusa came from Percy Jackson, and ignoring the whole Greek mythology.
THE BOOK OF MORMON CLIP IS ELITE PAT 2:29
Edit: you then brought me a Javert clip AND an Al Capone Shines My Shoes reference and I just can’t. You’re truly perfect. Heart.
Ugh it warms my soul when someone gets not 1, but 3 of my quirky references in the comments
What's better than flavored powdered food dye that requires a cup of sugar to be palatable?
Moo Deng (or a crew member dressed as a hippo) would've been on "Ellen"
I was EAGERLY awaiting this. Thank you Pat for 3AM entertainment!
EDIT: That eulogy to the A’s was beautiful. I had no idea that was happening and I’m stunned. I can’t imagine watching your team ripped away from you. I’m sorry to hear that, man.
Ellen claiming double standards is such a whataboutism… like yes, women DO have it harder in entertainment, but we’re not talking about general entertainment right now, ELLEN. We’re talking about YOU, Ellen. You still did and said those horrible things, Ellen! You still need to take responsibility, Ellen! Oh, you wanna talk about double standards? Show us how much you paid your POC employees, Ellen.
At the end of the day, NOBODY should be this cruel to the people around them, regardless of gender. Just because men statistically get away with it more often doesn’t mean I want women to also get away with it! This behavior should be shut down no matter who does it.
(And let’s be honest here… if Ellen was truly canceled, she never would have gotten a standup gig in the first place.)
4:02 the heck was that slappin the air behind elmo
Kool Aid makes for a better slogan not only for being less of an uncomfortable mouthful than "Flavour Aid" but also because the use of the word "kool" hints at the peer pressure that plays an instrumental role in cult formation and success. Therefore the name stays. Thank you for coming to my counter-Ted Talk.
Heaven's Gate drank poisoned vodka and apple juice. Now that'd be a cumbersome expression.
I enjoy your vids man. Don't let up. Cheers.
Thanks friend! Foot on the gas
(Video idea) I’m no baseball fan BUT I’d be down to hear more from you about what went down with the Oakland A’s and your thoughts
Just gonna say Congressman Leo Ryan wasn't part of the Jonestown cult, but gunned down for trying to save them. I'm sure you know, but it was worded like he was just lumped in with the cult.
It's that her screen personality and her actual personality didn't match at all. Howard Stern gets to do his type of thing, because he spent decades cultivating a fanbase who are into that. Ellen cultivated a fanbase who are not into her things.
What I don't really understand is why it took so long before her being a shitty human being came out. Like, I'm 35, and my mom in 2005, maybe 2006 said, "Oh I don't watch Ellen anymore. She's incredibly rude to restaurant staff regularly, from what I've read."
My mom also supports Trump.
It was hard to get the word out back then because the Internet was NOTHING like it is now. The "ME TOO" movement didn't take off until 2017, people like Wienstein and Cosby got away with their behavior for several years even though it was an "open secret" in Hollywood.
Ellen was so beloved that when anyone said she wasn't so nice no one believed them because Ellen was the "Queen of Nice." You can't get away with toxic behavior now because it's easier (NOT easy) to spread the word.
I just want to know what is wrong with her audience. Are they in a cult? It’s disturbing.
Algorithm, let's have a talk. You and I, man to algorithm. More Pat. Good talk.
I always despised her talk show and could never figure out why people thought she was nice when all of her “jokes” were humiliating people with no money lol like really
Even the first line, "You can't be mean, and be in show business". Speaks a lot, because she's ignoring the fact that she's their boss, as has alot of power over them
9:23 OMG I love you so much for this! Like I want to hug you. I have preached about Kool-Aide getting falsely blamed for years to anyone who will listen. 😂. I was about to be annoyed on this video-and then you corrected the record! You did the thing!!! ❤❤❤
I think she started okay, by pointing out that women are judged more harshly for their actions than men. I mean when people ask "what celebrities were rude when you met them" the majority of people talk about their experience with women. However, when a man behaves the same way, most of the time he is given a pass or no more than a slap on the wrist. Though, much like Taylor Swift or Katy Perry, she uses her gender to excuse any criticisms and doens't take accountability. Instead complaining that people are being sexist.
Ok but why would I listen to the soccer mom from the one bit talk for a good long while -
It is simply a lie that Ellen's sitcom was canceled because she came out. Her coming out was a desperate attempt to save an already failing, terrible show. It got her enormous positive PR, but that was not enough to save a bad TV show.
2:53 No offense to your mom Pat, I'm sure she's a lovely person otherwise, but what maniac, what monster even would prioritize Ellen Degeneres over Sal Vulcano!!
"women are too afraid to play air guitar" is a really depressing self report. we had fun in my house, ellen
I got Muammar Gaddafi in that Buzzfeed quiz! ZENGA ZENGA ZENGA!
Whenever a narcissist has power, there will be “flying monkeys” drinking the Kool-aid and normal people objecting to the bullying and general craziness.
You’ve really quickly become one of my favourite channels, up there with other comfort channels I’ve had for ages like Jarvis Johnson
Appreciate it :) this comment made me smile
Larry David beating up Elmo was one of the funniest things I ever seen.
I was fully expecting the “cancelled” to right wing grift pipeline
Unpopular opinion as a gay man myself - I never found Ellen particularly funny or interesting. She just wasn’t that funny ever INMHO.
As an autistic guy with a major special interest in mythology and the floor, I will take that as an excuse to lore dump in the comments.
medusa was one of the thre gorgons. Beings in Greek mythology were women with claws tusks and snakes for hair. Whose visages were so ugly they would turn all who looked upon them to stone. They were daughters of the primordial deities Phorcys and Ceto. The young Medusa was once a beautiful maiden Who was seduced (basically raped.) by the sea god Poseidon. Who was then punished by being turned into a monster! The ancient Greeks were low-key kind of like the first incells. Expect with actual talent.
Later the Greek hero Perseus. Had to slay Medusa in a bet to save his mother from a pervy king. Perseus traveled to the edge of the world and slew Medusa in her sleep. but it turns out she was pregnant with two brothers Pegasus the flying horse. And a random fully grown guy with a sword named Chrysaor. Who burst out of her neck fully grown.
Anyway flying horses and sword guys aside. Medusa is often painted as a monster. Representing the ugliness of humanity but to have an honest look at it through the modern feminist lens. She is a rape victim who is turned into a monster as a scapegoat. For the divine patriarchy. Kind of depressing and screwed up really.
Of course, the whole backstory thing was created by Ovid. Who was really more of a Roman anyway? An alternative story is that she bragged about being more beautiful than Athena so she cursed her. which is less problematic, to say the least. Still petty though but that's to be expected.
More likely her original origin was she was just a monster at birth just like her sisters. And the tragic backstories came later. To make her more dramatic.
I only recently learned that by the way. The children's book I read when I was 13 gave me the Ovid version. It says a lot about our culture that's the version we tell our kids. When it wasn't even Greek in origin! anyway calling Ellen medusa is kind of an insult to medusa. as she was either a innocent abuse victim turned in to a mindless monster who turned people to stone or a mindless monster who turned people stone probably by accident. as oppose to Ellen.
also my spell check. almost replaced autistic to acoustic which is kind of a pseudo slur at this point oops.
christopher nolan wrote “you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain” about ellen Actually
Except Nolan wrote that about how someone's morals and ideology can be corrupted over time and Ellen was the villain the whole time but her public perception slowly changed from hero to villain
Christopher Nolan didn't write that and didn't even understand the line during shooting.
I wonder why she cares enough about what anyone thinks about her to be bothered to make this, because she can't be doing it for the money... does she need to be loved THAT much?!! "She's mean", "she's kind", she's this, she's that.... oh whatever already..! And why do we even care anyway, are our own real lives so uninteresting..?
It’s 12:30 in the morning, I need to get up for my first day of my fall term of my first year of college in 6 and a half hours, and yet, I am watching this
Good luck! Hope I provided some laughs prior to your coursework (generally contains notably fewer laughs than one of my videos)
Why doesn’t she address the stories told of her on Reddit? She’s complaining about being cancelled when cancelling others was her daily routine.
Ah, the classic "Failed Commedian Goes To Netflix" again.
As a queer woman, I know we aren’t always given the benefit of the doubt & people can try to cancel them without hearing their side. How Chappell Roan has been treated for setting healthy boundaries & voting for Kamala without endorsing her comes to mind. When Ellen was “cancelled”, I initially wondered how much her being openly lesbian factored into it. THEN James Corden was cancelled for the exact same thing, who is, as far as I know, a straight cisgender man. The reality is people don’t want to work in a toxic environment & social media has given them the opportunity to expose abusers in the industry whether it’s Lea Michele, Ellen, or James Corden. Instead of getting therapy & reflecting inward, Ellen trying to make herself the victim for the consequences of the abusive environment she created.
I cannot get enough of how much sass you put into your content I love it ❤
