PRINT YOUR FILM PHOTOS ... darkroom or digital, it doesn't matter

  • Printing images is one of the best ways to appreciate your film images. 35mm and esepcially 120 film look fantastic on paper. Digital prints are great, but I also highly recommend you try to get into a darkroom as well. Even better, building a home darkroom is the ultimate convenience. Color or black and white, both are amazing to see in the physical form.

    Just this last week I had 27 cheap prints made of some of my favorite recent images, and can’t say enough how magical it was to see my work in a physical format. Seeing it on a screen is impressive enough, but seeing it on paper was magical. It gave me that feeling of “WOAH. I made THIS?” and that gave me so much more confidence about the quality of my work and built my desire to keep shooting.

      Exactly! It’s a game changer

    I really believe film was meant to be enlarged, not scanned. Specially some b&w film that scan terribly but when enlarged it's amazing. Hope this video works as an incentive to bring more people to the darkroom!
    Oh, I prefer the greener northern lights image and the one with a more neutral tonality of the "white lines" :)
    Thanks for this video, very nice!

      No question stills film was designed to be enlarged.

    I used to use an Epson ET-2550 th-cam.com/users/postUgkxciSwynMJ7PnUvvx11rewiu-yFBkZTl53 , an early model of the ink tank style. It worked well, but had one nuisance that drove me up the wall; if you didn't put it in high quality print mode you'd get a streak across the page. I'm happy to say I have yet to see this with this printer. The print quality has been fantastic so far, the set up was super easy. All in all I'm very happy with this printer.

    As an aside, glad to see more videos from you printing color. I've got RA-4 supplies sitting in my cart on freestyle right now until I can find a developing tube at a decent price and watching more of this is just getting me more excited to get started.

    Is there any particular reason for developing your prints in the can as opposed to a tray? I suppose the can lets you turn on the lights earlier in the process?

    • @ribsy
      @ribsy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      correct. trays would mean total darkness for a very long time, also prolonged exposure to fumes for longer

    With scanning, I swear you could shoot most any color film stock, scan it into photoshop and edit it to look like Portra. People literally do this with digital cameras so what the point anymore? I feel like the only way to be a purist is to develop the negatives in the darkroom and then scan the image and edit to match cause otherwise there is nothingness to keep your editing within the parameters of the film itself. Does this make sense?

    • @ribsy
      @ribsy  ปีที่แล้ว

      i don't fully agree. you can def manipulate a lot in photoshop, but each film does actually have it's own characteristics. you can choose to preserve those or ignore them
