  • On January 16, 1969 the first Metroliner train ran on the Northeast corridor with Budd built electric MU's, today whats left of the Metroliners have been converted into cab cars and still run on the Northeast corridor, Keystone corridor, and Springfield line. This videos shows the cabs leading trains on all three lines.

    My only Metroliner service trip was on the NEC (Philadelpha - 30th Street Station to New Carrolton Station in Maryland) in 1979. Because the Metroliner service was the "business train", it was invariably overbooked, and you usually had to stand if the train was full - and it almost always was - even on weekends. (This was a weekend run.)

    I rode plenty of the converts in regional service; I rode the Metroliner exactly ONCE in pre-conversion revenue service - which makes sense as the Metroliner in revenue service was the *business train* and would be replaced by the Acela Express as such. Metroliner Service was also notorious for being overbooked; that meant that you usually had to stand on both the Philadelphia runs (Philly to NYC and Philly to DC)

    When I went to Philadelphia on Amtrak keystone 664 while at Philadelphia when keystone 670 arrived they let me in the cab of ACS-64 641 so I’m happy to see it in here and I took Amtrak keystone 667 back to lancaster so yeah that made my day

    at 2:19 you can see what looks like 4 amfleet I cars and 2 Ex-Metroliner cab cars (1 leading the train and 1 at the very back) formed a 6 car consist this looks like how they would have looked like back when they were EMUs and in married pairs in the mid 70s-late 80s

      its also accurate in the way that the metroliners broke down frequently, so locomotives would frequently haul the emus

    why did they have to transfer to regular powercars? the metroliner looked easy and simple and it was the fastest train in the world when it was introduced in the 1960's going about 150-170 mph in speed tests. i think it would be a good idea to remake them so that they would be more reliable and faster than before

    • @lorumipsum1129
      @lorumipsum1129 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thier were faster trains then the metro liner, but it was a good start. Thier were two issues though, one was the rails on the bed and keystone weren’t properly rebuilt yet too handle high speed, and two, the metro liners were plagued with reliability issues. Turning them into cab cars saves money and time from scrapping them and having too turn trains around all the time

    • @lorumipsum1129
      @lorumipsum1129 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Derya Baygan-Robinett they also did try rebuilding some of them. Guess it didn’t work out well enough as they were still turned into this. Though that may have been due too the Acela entering service, which was better in just about every way

      @@lorumipsum1129 The Metroliners were rebuilt in the Mid 70s for extended service, but the Keystone Corridor was converted to diesel in 1987, so they needed being self propelled then.

      The "Amfleet" cab cars are in reality old Metroliner EMU cab cars with their motors removed. The metroliner propulsion was notoriously unreliable and were pulled in favor of locomotive hauled trains, but since the car bodies had so little wear on them Amtrak just took out the problem parts and turned them into cab cars

    • @jtkm
      @jtkm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exactly, they need a replacement pronto. Difficult thing for Amtrak is that they usually patronize American manufactures, but Budd and Pullman ceased to exist, so they will have to buy foreign rolling stock (though they may be better in quality anyway). Congress wouldn't let that happen is money would be going to a foreign manufacturer.
