The Army in wars of Islam was very well explained and indeed the Sahaba knew what they were fighting for it's not like an army fighting for salary and sometimes and most of the time they don't know why . You mentioned you havent come across any sahabi with "symptomps" of post traumatic stress disorder. Khalid bin Waleed used to wake up shocking in the night in the hadith. The prophet told him to do ruqyah and he didnt experience it anymore

Mufti sahab is falling in a classic trap of using Quran as a history book and not putting it in contemporary context. Please remember the Divine guidance is in the text not in the commentary. Human speech should serve the text and follow it very closely. Very high fidelity to Allah's word needs to be maintained at all time.

You have to explain the background of the verses, without explaining the history it becomes difficult to understand
