Cliffy was at his best at the end of his career! He sold that dummy so often players knew he was going to throw it and still fell for it. The man was a football genius and it’s great to see him so healthy
I remember Jeff Toovey & Cliffy Lyons playing in the halfs as a kid & at that time I was just starting to get into Rugby League, had a Kiwi coach there as well Graham Lowe & the first All Black to switch codes Mathew Ridge. So Manly was my first team I ever supported. Great memories!
Cliff Lyons and Kevin walters are the best ball players I ever saw. Cliff was easily the most graceful of the 2. But it was special watching Lyons to Menzies or walters to Renouf, it’s just a shame that neither played more origin or tests.
I loved watching CLIFFY when the good old days of WINFIELD Cup in the 80s & 90s....Was a fan of Manly in their golden days of Cliffy, Toovey, Roberts, Iro, Ridge, Stokes, Shearer, Hassler, Bella, Gillespie... etc. Legends 👍👍👍👍
Mate I was lucky enough the watch this golden era of NRL as a teenager in NZ. I had hardly heard of league (all rugby) then there it was on tv (we had 3 channels) every afternoon after school. So many great players and great battles.
As a life long Manly fan (from the early 80s), I have 5 favourite players (a growing list lol). In no particular order they are: Tooves (Geoff Toovey), Beaver (Steve Menzies), Snake (Brett Stewart), Rowdy (Dale Shearer) and ... Napper (or God as we called him) - Cliff Lyons. Sir Cliffy, the Genius of Brookvale.
Well I'm glad Cliffy cleared up that urban legend of the ol' halftime smoke. That was just so ingrained in footy folklore, so I'm glad the man himself set it straight.
Absolute legend ! Top man , those days league was on fire , sadly it's just not the same now , great times and memories in that era as a young boy watching legends like cliff .
Cliff Lyon scored the greatest ever test try at Old Trafford in 1990. In the 1st test at Wembley, Australia looked a little shapeless, but Fulton understood what was needed being 1 down with 2 to go... moved some players around, Cliffy to 6, moving Stuart to 7and Benny Elias at hooker. #dodgedbullet. BTW... Kevin Ward came across from Castleford, not St Helens... he only joined us in 1990 and never played with O'Connor/Vautin.
@@TheDodger74 Sorry Rodger, I'm a big Saints' fan and was talking about Ward joining St Helens in August 1990. O'Connor/Vautin played in the Australian off-season for Saints in 1988/89. I know Ward played with them both @Manly. I actually watched highlights of the 1987 Grand Final last week. Once Manly won that, they then flew to England to face Wigan @Central Park in front of 38,000. No tries, but a brutal game. I didn't go, but was told about it. As a result, I became a Manly fan & have always looked out for their results.
I remember O'Connor / Vautin playing for Saints in CCF against Wigan at wembley , 2 world class players like that and they just froze on the day! And that Wigan v Manly wow! One of the most intense games I've ever seen!
@@TheDodger74 I was at Vautin/O'Connor's Saints' debut game. I was also @Wembley. Vautin was loved by Saints' fans for his performancs, but O'Connor not as much. 👍
That Test try by Meninga…I was working in Tokyo then and my best mate was a pommy from Hull. He couldn’t believe how good that Australian team was, they were an unbelievable side. All world class.
Being an old Wests supporter never liked Manly, but always had a soft spot for Cliffy. My father tells me that as a kid in the 1960s in the Riverina, Cliff's grandfather was in a work team that often came to our location and gave me a penny once.
That 1990 tour was something else. It was looking like a dismal failure with Wally Lewis being controversially overlooked. That was until Cliffy entered the fray to combine with big Mal and Cliffy to pull things back from the brink!
Always kept you on your seats edge, and in the game, always, true player, very professional, mentally right too. Don't make them like that , he oozed character on field, sure slick.
One of the best ever to play for Leeds, loved watching him play for us.
Such a gentleman love watching him play and love watching him talk legend 👍👍
Absolute Legend! Love you Cliffy from Dunedin,NZ

What a humble champion.
Loved watching him as a kid here in NZ in any jersey.
Def a big manly fan back then what a dream team.
Cliffy was at his best at the end of his career! He sold that dummy so often players knew he was going to throw it and still fell for it. The man was a football genius and it’s great to see him so healthy
Lived in deewhy for a bit cliffy was playing low division footy in his 40s still carving up with his passing game .. superb to watch
Cliffy is all class
Brilliant interview. Great to learn more about an absolute legend.
Was ahead of his time Cliffy....can see why the Johns boys love him....legend!
Brilliant. Absolutely bloody brilliant. Love ya (and hated you in 97, Cliffy - I am a Newey boy) Cliffy. Great work, Matty

you were insane cliffy, one of the first who proper showed how to take it to the line
Loved watching him at Leeds when I was a 13 year old kid

@@HighMaintenancePS Yep, when everyone (Forwards and Backs) played a full 80 minutes despite getting smashed, pummeled and the odd biff fist fights. 👊

Great team 87. My personal favourite. Ron Gibbs was a rough version of what Beaver was to perfect later on. Cheers Nappa
Absolute bloody legend👍👍. I miss the good old days.. Go the Sea Eagles.

Yes Kevin Ward came across from Castleford to Manly but in 1987 not 1990 and he did play with O'Connor/ Vautin. The Info is easy to find online

The man...the legend
Everyone hates manly but their unfortunate fans but we all just had to love Cliff Lyons. The legend that lasted.
