    April your videos are great, well explained and informative. Lots of wonderful ideas. I have to make a comment about safety. This was taught to me at 16, 50 years of carpentry experience since then. When you put the circular saw down after a cut NEVER place it on the blade guard. Place it on a table with the blade guard hanging over the edge or turn the saw over and place it on it's top. At times when you cut small slivers of wood they will sometimes stick between the retracting blade guard and the rigid blade guard above the blade. This prevents the retractable guard from closing. You then place the saw on the ground and the blade is still turning. The saw immediately starts traveling. Twice I have seen this and both times the saw went up the operators leg after catching his jeans. One guy had extensive knee damage, the other never had children. Keep up the great work. You are the best shop organizer i have seen.

    I LOVED our outdoor shower while living in the country. Our house ran on propane and having an outdoor shower during the hot months (which incidentally was about 8 months out of the year) saved us A LOT of money because we did not use our hot water heater other than washing dishes. The outdoor shower meant that we only needed to fill our propane once a year rather than 4 times a year saving us $1500.00 annually.

    I would have put the diagonal brace on the door the other direction (from the lower corner on the hinge side to the upper corner on the swinging side) so it would have been in compression instead of in tension.
    The way it is, gravity will try to pull the diagonal brace joints apart, the other way, gravity would try to compress them together.

    Should have replaced the dirt under the shower floor with gravel, so water cannot build up and run off all over the place. Which can happen with continuous use (each member showers after the last with little/no time in between).

    • @doubledarefan
      @doubledarefan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      The water would just puddle on top of the concrete. The idea of a gravel base is it would act like a sponge, soaking up the water and allowing it to seep into the ground at its own pace.

    • @talladegadude4852
      @talladegadude4852 7 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      I have an outdoor shower myself, so here in Texas, the threat of scorpions loom in between the stones or nestled down in the pea gravel & then would crawl up when water started flowing. Where if it's solid, a quick inspection is easy enough, before turning on water. The water doesn't puddle long at all. It soaks right in by the time I'm toweled off and dressing. Still wet in between stones but within 30-45 mins even that is dry. Can't beat that Texas heat!

    • @Velo1010
      @Velo1010 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The shower looks great!
    Thank you, thank you, thank you for mixing your concrete before putting it in the holes. I cringe every time I see someone dump dry mix in the hole and then pour water on top. It doesn't work that way folks. I've dug up too many posts that were done like that and they will get a 1/4 to 1/2 inch brittle crust on the outside but the inside is still powder or sometimes just a crumbly mess.

    • @ruskiryan2398
      @ruskiryan2398 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    But isn't that diagonal brace in the wrong way? AFAIK it needs to go from low at the hinge side to high at the lock side.
    Apparently you don't have much rain in your neck of the woods. A wood pile in concrete wouldn't last a year out here. We need connect our wood to a concrete and/or stone foundation well above ground to prevent rot, even if it is treated lumber.

    April, for quite sometime our lives have been mirroring each other in the strangest ways, it all started back when you decided to quit the 9 to 5-er and pursue your hobby full time as I did, then I got that beast of a router from Triton tools, next thing I know, you get a a Triton endorsement, there are several other projects in between that synced up and I just nodded my head in amazement.
    Well now it has gone full on surreal cuz I just finished my outdoor shower. Only real difference was I live so far out in the country I din't bother with a door so I had no "experts" hounding me on the proper placement of a certain board.

    Things that may be worth considering for people building similar projects:
    1. Are you going to build this in a frost region? Think about how you'll drain your lines before winter.
    2. Water management: What is the water doing after it hits the ground? (Possibly want to plumb in a drain, maybe let it catch in a garden cistern.)
    3. Do you want/need a changing space? Easy enough to add a second 'room' onto the setup with a bench and outer gate. Keep your clothes dry, and avoid overly casual views that might not be welcomed by guests and such.

      @AprilWilkerson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The water doesn't even hit the side panels. You can stand inside and get undressed without getting your cloths wet so I think it will be ok. However, if it turns out that water does collect then I will certainly drill some holes. ; )

      The normal stream probably doesn't, but it will pretty much always splash out when people are in the shower. Also for rain mabye?
      What I'm wondering about most: Wouldn't that water be terribly cold for a shower?

    • @CrankyPantss
      @CrankyPantss 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Tim Derks when it's over 100° outside and you've been working out in it, the garden hose water feels really good. It's no difference than the kids playing in the sprinkler.

      My grandparents lived in Waco, Texas for awhile, with water from a tower. As summer kicked up, they would just turn off their hot water heater and let it be the "cold" water supply. This could be well water, but even so, after a day outside in 100F Texas heat, a few minutes under a cold stream feels like a lifesaver.

    Hi April, just came across your channel the other day and really enjoy your video's. I did carpentry in high school and loved it, been in the oil field for the past 15 years and I'm thinking of making a change and going back to carpentry and finishing out a career in that area. I'm local down here in Texas as well so I now about the heat, stay cool, it was 80 yesterday...

    very nice. i might make one. ...im no expert, but I think your door is on backwards. the diagonal brace should come from the bottom hinge going up.

    • @drewt3210
      @drewt3210 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are correct. The diagonal piece is indeed backwards here.

      Funny, when she built the privacy fence and gate (a later video) she purposely put the diagonal brace the opposite way (because SO many commented this one was backwards) and SO MANY people were commenting THAT was incorrect! Ha! You just can't please everyone I guess!

    April,
    I'm a new subscriber. I am enjoying your videos overmuch. Great job on the shower. I made one a few years ago at my house, but being in Ohio I had to add hot and cold water to it. The water from the well was absolutely frigid, even in midsummer. I wish I had access to your video before I made mine, I saw a few things you did that I would have incorporated.
    By the way, is anyone else sick of the "keyboard warriors" on youtube? Every time a person does a project and takes the time to record, edit and post it, you are guaranteed a few dozen viewers who have to chime in and show everyone how smart they are by criticizing the job...."you forgot........" "good job, but you should have......" blah, blah, blah.

    You put the diagonal 2x4 brace on the wrong way on the gate, the gate will sag over time. An outdoor shower is a crazy idea but I live in Canada where it's cold 6 months/yr LOL.

      There is a guy in Quebec with a you tube channel he calls the Woodpecker. He built an outdoor shower at his cottage last summer. Many people in southern Ontario who have pools also have outdoor showers because some people want to wash the chlorine off.

    • @simonb.5315
      @simonb.5315 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are correct

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I don't believe you are correct. The diagonal is ran from the top hinged to the bottom unhinged portion of the door. Which puts the diagonal in tension instead of in compression.

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Actually Tom, I had a few experts comment on that video telling me that I did it wrong and explained the physics behind why loading a diagonal in compression is not a good idea and will lead to buckling. So that's why I changed up the direction on this door and placed the 2x4 in tension instead.

    • @MrSandman431
      @MrSandman431 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      seems like these expert aren't really experts. the diagonal is always going in the other direction. i am a carpenter from germany and here every door with a diagonal is on compression. on tension, the screws or whatever holds the diagonal in place, must hold the weight of the door, on compression, it holds by itself. the job of the diagonal is to move the downside pressurefrom the knob-side to the bottom hing. take a look at farmdoors around, that sit for years.
      or search for "brettertür" an you find lots of pictures an german construction manuals.
