    Setting that orange wire in the proper spot solved my furnace always being the main and only source of heat. So basically my heatpump wasn't working... I knew something was off when the cold temperature came in and the bills skyrocketed! Thanks for this video.

    Great video. I was just wondering.... I have a heat pump. But it also has a blue, brown, and black wire. Any thoughts? When I test the heat, the compressor comes on for about 5 seconds, then stops, then comes back on again...

    We have an orange and a brown wire. Which one goes to the OB and where does the other one go? Our 'pro' installer did something not right, and it blows hot air only.

      If possible, look at where the wires are landed on the control board of indoor unit. The wire colors may not align to the terminals they are connected to.

    I started the installation around 2pm o. Superbowl LIV and I copy exactly the wiring as the one I took off the wall.
    Old thermostat was Honeywell "Lyric" round one in white,which is a piece of s***!
    Your video helped me figure out ,why was I getting heat from cool mode...just by switching the orange to OB and white to W2 and voila..../let it be 😎!!

    I have a 4 wire on old system with white, red, blue, green. Also had a jumper between rc and rh. The red wire was in the rh also. Where do I put the wires for the nest?

  • @bre683

    I bought one of these and before I install I have a question. I have a conventional system my wires now in my Honeywell are red for R, Y for yellow, blue for C (common), orange is in W, green is in G, white is in W2. My question is does the Y go in Y1 and both my Ws go in W1-W2 on the nest?

  • @WhittyOne

    On a heat pump with Aux heat, you don't put the white wire to W1....you are supposed to put it to W2/Aux. That's why all of your commenters below have it blowing heat. Common mistake, easy fix.

      I manage rental property. So had my heat and air co. Install. Then had them come back to check why it wouldn't cool. They said it was a bad thermostat. And had them put old one back on. Has already cost me $150.00 for service calls. So want to try doing it myself. And think your comment might be the answer.

    I have the Nest E thermostat, and I have on the left Y1(yellow wire) G (green wire) R (red wire) and on the right and here is the confusion and may be why its not working W1 (orange wire)? C (blue wire) and *OB (white wire)? A technician came today and said that my issue is the this thermostat, “not compatible with heat pump units? (My issue is if I turn On Heat, I get cold air)

    • @FatKidFriendly53
      @FatKidFriendly53 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I'm understanding correctly your thermostat the nest E is not compatible with heat pumps so that technician was correct. However this is the 2nd gen nest and it is compatible for heat pumps.

      I'm no expert, but everything I've seen says orange should go in the OB slot. It controls the reversing valve that changes your system from heat to cool or vice versa. (I know this is late, but other people are likely reading this for info now.)

    • @MichaelReuter
      @MichaelReuter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have a common wire to power the thermostat? If not Nest tries to pull a small amount of power off the other wires to keep itself on but this can trip some systems into turning on.

    My thermostat is on the way. I have an older Trane system and it has 8 wires including a brown wire which goes to a T terminal which should not be needed with Nest. My yellow goes to Y1, green to G, orange to OB, red to Rc (could go to Rh too), white to W2 Aux (auxiliary heat), blue to C, and black to * for emergency heat which is a separate function from auxiliary heat and will be used for heat if the heat pump isn't working and can be manually turned on. I'm not an HVAC pro but this is what I've gathered from Nest and people who have done the installation.

    Please help, as my HVAC contractor has been unable to address the issues so far. Below are the units which have been purchased and installed in my residence. The installers have spent days re-wiring my Nest thermostats and they still appear to not function properly. Can you provide assistance? Can you provide a definite answer that 3rd Generation Nest should/will work with the below devices? If not, why not and which SMART thermostats will work? I have seen my neighbors with brand new and modern Carrier and Goodman systems which do not have any issues with Nest Gen3.

    No reason to cut the wires before you remove the back plate of the thermostat. Just take the screws out of the back plate and pull it forward to see how much slack you have to work with behind the wall. If you have zero slack you’re going to wish you did not cut those wires trust me I’ve been there
