Wow. I was only a kid then and can't remember much about the games except what a big deal the event was... and the theme song. But watching this evokes so many vivid memories of this time. Awesome.
John Walker falling in the 1500 final was a heartbreaking moment for those who had watched and followed his career ever since the Christchurch 1974 games. He may not have medalled in Auckland but he deserved a better finish to his magnificent career.
"Super Highlights" was part of a series of edited highlights from the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland. In fact, there were five VHS cassettes and each cassette covered the opening ceremony, track and field, swimming and diving, boxing and, as I wrote earlier, the "Super Highlights" with the best moments from gymnastics, bowls, cycling and weightlifting. All VHS cassettes in that series were released in 1990 by TVNZ Enterprises and then sold separately at various VHS stockists (e.g. Farmers, Kmart etc).
