Hr.Ms. Karel Doorman

This is the English version of a film about the Dutch aircraft carrier Hr.Ms. Karel Doorman (R81). It shows everyday life onboard the aircraft carrier during the journey it made in 1962 to Suriname and the Dutch Antilles. The ships Hr.Ms. Groningen (D813) and Hr.Ms. Limburg (D814) joined her during this voyage.
Hr.Ms. Karel Doorman was a colossus-class aircraft carrier of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The ship started out in the British Navy as HMS Venerable on 17 january 1945. She was bought by the Dutch Navy on 1 april 1948 and was sold to Argentina in 1969 and renamed ARA Veinticinco de Mayo.

Zij had dus geen sleepboten nodig om te meren. De Grumman S 2 Tracker vliegtuigen werden gebruikt omdat de sleepboten bemanning staakte in de haven van Fremantle West Australie. De motoren van de toestellen waren krachtig genoeg voor dit karwei.
