You can fulfill all battlefield roles with mediums and heavies and still be very successful. These two classes is where I like to put almost all my battle value particularly in the 3025 era. Thunderbolts, warhammers, orions and marauders are what really got me into this game.
I think heavy mech wise, I didn't really like them as a kid, but as an adult, I think the Warhammer is one of my favourite mechs. I'm still not fully sold on the Marauder as I think it has heat issues, but I think the 3M is amazing.
Especially in 3025 Assault Mechs very much have a role on the field. There is much less firepower to go around over all, so they actually will last a considerable ammount of time even versus several enemies. And an AC20 is something not many Mediums or even Heavies can use. And at that Techlevel actually something to be feared and not scoffed at. With higher tech levels, being harder to hit becomes much more important than having the armor to simply shrug off any non crit hit.
@@BigRed40TECH If you are piloting a vanilla 3R you have to hold back on your firepower. That said, being able to unload 2 PPCs and a AC/5 when an juicy target presents itself is great. Honestly, my biggest complaint about the Marauder is the AC/5. Just having one ammunition based weapon makes heat management a bigger priority due to the possibility of ammo explosions. Also autocannons have horrible weight vs damage ratio. Any design that rips out the AC is an upgrade, though most of them make the mistake of using missiles in its place. The 3D is a good design, simply because it gets rid of the ammo. My personal favorite modification of a 3R is to rip out all of the weapons. Instead of the PPC and medium laser in each arm, 2 large lasers for a total payload of 4 large lasers. Add 5 heat sinks to account for the left over weight. While this shortens the reach of the Marauder, with only 3 heat being built up per turn it makes it into a long range monster that outclasses other Marauders and other snipers, putting it on equal footing to an Awesome in my opinion.
@@Chris_Sizemore I don't know too much about the boardgames as I've only played the most recent battletech, but stripping the lasers completely and having 2 uac5 and a uac2 mean that you can core even some solid assault mechs with an almost certian chance to hit the centre. And they still have decent armour and plenty of ammo for longer engagements. Its basically every turn it gets a kill, regardless of what the target it.
The Marauder is just an absolute favourite- so many different versions and I love it so. I also enjoy the Rifleman 4D, an absolute disaster of a mech, it's fun that bad mechs exist in canon.
Easily one of the best parts of BT in regards to unit design is that there are plentiful examples of mechs that are bad for all the right reasons. Be it the last-ditch superweapons of a megalomaniachal tyrant or ideas that seemed sensible at the onset and then plainly didn't work out, there's examples of mechs sucking by the same mechanisms that result in bad AFVs in real life.
Me having just decided that I was too harsh on the rifleman after bringing a 4d for fire support: Jokes aside, I mean. MW wise at least, fill it with obscene amounts of double heatsinks + ER large lasers, and you've got an ammo free sniper buddy!
My heart has always belonged to the venerable Thunderbolt. There’s just something about the off-centre cockpit and shoulder mounted LRM rack that does it for me. And it has a weapon for each range bracket with the armor to survive long enough to bring them all to bear. Good variants too, the 5SE for hopping around and the 5S for some PPC sniping.
There are so many good Heavies. Honestly, I think the only Heavy I genuinely dislike is the Jagermech. Literally all the others have some value in some capacity or look cool or are just outright strong. The Thunderbolt is more competitive than some assaultmechs even, it's nto to be trifled with.
@@BigRed40TECH The LRM variant of the JagerMech actually has a prized spot as overwatch in my merc command lance! I tend to keep my CO towards the rear, so combined with the LRMs on his Archer and the Thunderbolt & Wolverine doing bodyguard duty, the Jager seldom has problems with randos closing and can lay down some good fire support in a pinch.
@@atticusthegamingllama8302 Yea, the LRM Jaeger is definitely superior to the pure gun jaeger, it even has more amrour. It's still not well armoured, but its definitely better.
I enjoyed the Orion for 2 reasons. 1 st and most important, it was my best paint job. One time I just hit the dry brushing so right. I wasn't a great painter, but it was my most satisfying to achieve. 2. Probably because I loved that paint so much, I forced myself to play Orion until I actually got good with it. Others can have their Marauder's or Warhammers, but I loved that old thing.
Thunderbolt and Catapult are my favourite heavies, with special mention for my custom lance lead Marauder that swaps around the PPC and AC5 configuration. Throw in a jaegermech, black knight, warhammer or orion to round out a solid heavy battle lance. Clan heavies though are the stuff of nightmares. Vulture, Timberwolf, Ebon Jaguar, Night Gyr, Sun Spider, Summoner, Loki, there are just so many terrifying designs.
The Marauder is probably my absolute favorite mech in the entire franchise, but honestly most of my favorites are heavy mechs. Medium mechs are just fine, but they have to sacrifice a lot more to really shine in any one role. Heavy mechs, on the other hand, have the tonnage available to either excel in a single role or fill several roles well without having any crippling drawbacks. Plus they are still have at least decent speed. One of my more obscure favorites is the DRG-1G Dragon/Grand Dragon (I like PPCs much more than autocannons personally). And if you allow custom configurations, heavy mechs absolutely cannot be beat!
Heavy Mechs. If there was a wrestling championship in Battletech, these would be classed as the heavyweights. Enough armour to survive a critical core explosion of an enemy. Enough firepower to cripple or outright vaporise anything below its weight class or equivalent. Enough speed to chase down and hunt it’s lighter brethren. It is truly the best of all aspects. Warhammer, Thunderbolt, Catapult, BlackKnight, Marauder, Rifleman, names that inspire fear and admiration amongst the warriors during the succession wars. Hell, certain pilots that are synonymous with a mech like Natasha Kerensky in her patented Warhammer “Black Widow” send waves of dread to opposing forces. Just the sight of the 70 ton machine sounds a klaxon to all to evacuate the battlefield. When you’ve reached that kind of notoriety, you know it’s for a reason.
I'd say the original Poster Boy is the Warhammer. Heavy 'Mechs probably make the best dedicated weapons platforms; i.e. Rifleman/Jagermech as Flak Batteries, Archer/Catapult/T-Bolt/Orion as Missile Boats, T-Bolt/ Warhammer/Marauder/Orion as Brawlers/Battering Rams, etc...
I adore how you used words, Pilot, Elite, Battlemechs it reminds me of great intros from MW 2, MW3, MW4... Great narration, keep up good work. Pilots of Innersphere salute you
In MW 5 my first heavy was a badly mauled Marauder I picked up out of a shop.I was unable to replace it's destroyed load out so I gave it a heavy rifle and two Large lasers with two mediums to back it up. Upgrading the parts along the way led to my personal Mech The Nevermore. Sure heavy rifles are outdated, but it has long range and heavy damage and fits in the same slot as the AC-5 for around the same weight. The range says 825m max,but that's a suggestion to a heavy rifle with a good shot behind the trigger.
The Grasshopper surprised me more than the Black Knight even though I was sure I would enjoy the Black Knight more. The Warhammer's alpha strike is disgusting but I only really enjoyed it in the Star League variant. The Marauder was how I increased my stable of mechs with its ability to snipe heads.
I loved my Cat load out from the early days of MWO. 6 LRM 15s, a downsized engine, stripped armour and jumpjets to save on weight. It was a glass cannon but those Alpha Strikes would devastate almost anything they hit. Had an engagement with an enemy Atlas that was busy pummeling a friendly, but hopelessly battered and outgunned, Highlander who was drawing the enemy fire. I'd been dismissed as a non-threat due to his ECM and twin AMS. I couldn't get a missile lock and at ~250m I said "screw it" and hit the trigger anyway letting fly with a 90 LRM shotgun blast. Let's just say that got his attention. The best part was when I SOMEHOW managed to perfectly dodge what should have been an effortless deathblow and managed a second, fatal, 90 LRM Salvo. I got beautiful front row view of that Atlas going up and the Highlander looking at me like "The Hell WAS that?!" as I barely missed a catastrophic overheat and avoided ammo racking myself.
@@bombomos to make it work I had a top speed of about 38kph, and something like 2 or 3 tons of armour across the entire chassis. One AC 20 anywhere but the center torso was basically an instant kill. I had 7 tons of ammo for a total of 14 total shots. Light mechs died instantly. Mediums typically went up in 1, but depending on angle or model they might need a finisher. Heavies and Assaults were typically 2 or 3. That low mobility and paper thin armour caused me to die more than a few times if I got out flanked or caught out of position. The low ammo had me trying to figure out how to provide support sometimes too. Had one mission I ran out completely, flanked the enemy position and was wedging my shoulder into the backs of assault mechs to keep them in the open. Helped my team take down an Atlas and an Awesome and was working on a Stalker before the hostile figured out I was even there.
Weird, I thought I'd already commented on this video. Anyway - the Archer was my first-ever mech in my first "how to play the game" session. But my favourite (3025, yo) heavies are the Dragon, Thunderbolt, and Orion.

My favorite mech in this class is the Thunderbolt in some variants. I especially like a variant with 8 medium pulse lasers. It needs a lot of heatsinks and still has a heatsink problem. . And a bigger engine. But the brutal firepower at short range more than makes up for it. It's a very tactical mech, but with a good starting position a killer, you just need to be able to aim well, so this variant needs a steady hand and thoughtful planning to be maximally effective in e.g. Mechwarrior online, or Mechwarrior 5 Mercs. The difficulty, as with all brawlers, is getting close to the enemy first, but once you're there, well......then you "bludgeon at least one or two opponents before they seriously get over the scare!" This variant is not directly in the lore. But there is at least one mech warrior in two books that uses a Thunderbolt converted this way (He shoots down three enemies, and then dies because his reactor shuts down......ähm, but saves his comrades in the process).. But even the lore-correct variants are all great mechs.
Love the Thanatos, I see it as the little brother of the Highlander. Both JJ capable mechs built for mixing missiles and direct fire weapons on the arms. and using aggressive tactics.
Great videos bro. Definitely enjoyed watching these. Now, if you were to do some super heavy and super light mechs videos. Maybe even tank, infantry, turret, and spaceship weight class videos, I'd truly appreciate it.
I'm mainly covering these from the perspective of the Succession Wars first, the super lights and super heavies are from later. They will be covered at a later time.
you missed one of the Marauder's strongest quirks: Narrow Profile. it invites rounds to ricochet and bounce as they impact. so it doesn't need as much armor and allows it to carry the weapons it does
Heavies suffer from one flaw. Specialization. They are excellent at what they do but if battlefield circumstances do not favor them, they are more of a liability than an asset. The least specialized heavy is the Whammer so it gets kudos for its range of variants. The best looking and most kinky heavy is one that isn't apparent until you get hit by fusion inducing plasma and shells the size of a human head from a Marauder amongst the distant tree line. Heavies straddle the angles of the competence triangle. Firepower, Armor, Speed. You can excel at one, be mediocre at two but can never have all three. IMO I'd rather have two mediums or medium and a light in place of one heavy, both capable together to check all the boxes. Heavies are also prone to being primary targets simply because if they are in their ideal situations, they can eliminate anything humanity has to offer sans orbital bombardment.
The Marauder has the market cornered for sexy, but you can't go wrong with the good old Thunderbolt or Crusader, just because they have the armor weight to carry a battle. The three represent the ideal of the well-designed heavy mech... firepower and armor.
@@BigRed40TECH Yeah, but as a miniatures nerd, I need the sexy. If I'm converting and painting, I want the pretty ones! The Orion... kinda pales in APPEARANCE to the others. Personal preference!
Gota say the archer has always been one of my favorites, good armor, enough lrm for a dedicated fire support, and 4 medium lasers and 2 battlefists allow it to thouroghly pummel any cheeky lights trying to mess around with the back line. Plus there's the dumb srm versions.
There are so many amazing mechs in Battletech, especially in the 3025 era. I love the redesigns by Catalyst, and I love the models they're coming out with too. It's so awesome. :D
Another great overview :-) love the heavies for fire support nice to add a couple to my mediums for that extra punch... thunderbolts and onions are an almost unpassable wall of armour if used properly :-)
@@BigRed40TECH yeah there is that lol :-) I can't remember when an Orion I've played with or against has actually died from an ammo explosion though so I think it's well placed if I remember right :-)
heavys are my favorites i have my top 4 1. Guillotine: one of the most deadly heavies you will ever see.. the GLT-8D (3062) is for me that mech 2. Grasshopper: similar to the Guillotine but with hands and LRMs GHR-5N (3040) is my favored variant 3. Cataphract: when i first seen it in MWO the new design (the old design was comically bad) it looks like a mini bloodasp, the cata also spawned the Caesar which is also a good mech 4. My own homebrew mech (its currently un named, and is 75 tons) but in my lore its designed to be a DIRECT competitor and alternative to the marauder
Where most of my C-bills go. And the Warhammer will always be the face of the BT for me, with the Marauder and Archer coming in right behind. With a Warhammer/Archer lance being my go to heavy fire support lance; and I prefer long range combat.
I love the Warhammer as well, but I do think the original poster-boy for Battletech during the Succession Wars is the Marauder. Not that I mind the current one. The Atlas has a certain zing to it as well. lol
@@BigRed40TECH My first BT box set had the Warhammer on the cover; that's what did it for me. And as Steiner player, the Atlas has it's own special love. In the current BT video game, I have and entire lance of Marauders that are just brutal; would never work on the table though.
Madcat is my favorite heavy. 75tons of pure metal. 80km. Can be configured to a laser boat or missile boat and everything in-between. The fact that it isn't in MWO is very sad
Surprised that he did not talk about the CAT/WOLF. I have to say they are one of the most iconic due to them being on the box of pretty much every game and the logo for the company.
Orion. Why? Because it's the mech that brought the usurper to his knees. Cataphract is also a good one because it came from a place of desperation for heavy mechs. It's a bit of a frankenmech but I still love it.
I'm feeling the need to take that Ashigaru mech design and convert it into a 2-4 litter mates meant to support each other and using interchangeable parts.
I'm big on assaults personally. Even with their drawbacks, I love that extra level of firepower. And Part 4 is coming, we will have an assault mech overview, probably by Wednesday.
It's funny but it maybe the DCMS training in me but I still favor the Dragon, Grand Dragon, Quickdraw, medium mechs and light mechs. Speed and flexibility are key to victory.
Positioning and speed are the biggest powers in Battletech. Firepower matters, so does armour, don't get me wrong, but the former 2 are really, really dangerous.
I do like my heavy mechs no matter what weight they are. I do like 60 tons the dragon and quick draw but I do find it hard to make them work...more so the dragon mech.

They will be covered at a later time.
you missed one of the Marauder's strongest quirks: Narrow Profile. it invites rounds to ricochet and bounce as they impact. so it doesn't need as much armor and allows it to carry the weapons it does
I'm just doing a broad overview of all heavies. If I end up doing individual mech coverage quirks will get covered. :)
Thunderbolt, Crusader, Orion, they're all super tanky and smashy. It's great.
@@BigRed40TECH Yeah, but as a miniatures nerd, I need the sexy. If I'm converting and painting, I want the pretty ones! The Orion... kinda pales in APPEARANCE to the others. Personal preference!
@@gbprime2353 I agree. But the Orion may be ugly, but it can reliably put the Thunderbolt into the ground if it has to, lol.
@@BigRed40TECH Oh I'd tell that Orion pilot to put up his fists and settle this, but the Orion hasn't got any... poor fellow! =)
@@gbprime2353 No need for fists when you've got an autocannon, lasers, and missiles ;)
@@BigRed40TECH it really is im loving it
@@spazz-qk5gz 100% agreed. All I need now is the time to paint around 300 mechs. lol
@@BigRed40TECH man I gota get more mechs, and learn how to paint, I got like a dozen and they are all gray.
@@spazz-qk5gz Checkout Camospecs TH-cam channel :)
Another great overview :-) love the heavies for fire support nice to add a couple to my mediums for that extra punch... thunderbolts and onions are an almost unpassable wall of armour if used properly :-)
As someone who plays the FWLM, I can say I love the Orion :D... except for its massive amount of ammo... lol
@@BigRed40TECH yeah there is that lol :-) I can't remember when an Orion I've played with or against has actually died from an ammo explosion though so I think it's well placed if I remember right :-)
2:05 By Kerensky, a Rifleman actually used for it's intended role!
heavys are my favorites i have my top 4
1. Guillotine: one of the most deadly heavies you will ever see.. the GLT-8D (3062) is for me that mech
2. Grasshopper: similar to the Guillotine but with hands and LRMs GHR-5N (3040) is my favored variant
3. Cataphract: when i first seen it in MWO the new design (the old design was comically bad) it looks like a mini bloodasp, the cata also spawned the Caesar which is also a good mech
4. My own homebrew mech (its currently un named, and is 75 tons) but in my lore its designed to be a DIRECT competitor and alternative to the marauder
I'm big on the first 2, and I think the Cataphract is okay. :)
Yay more big stomps mechs to keep me entertained
twice a week my friend. :)
Me before rolling out in my x6AC2 JM6-DD: "This is the end of the world! So where do you want to die?! Here?!?! or in a Jaeger?!?!?"
Here. That Jaegar is a death trap. lol
Guilotine being made by-retcon more common than the Grasshopper since its production was only slowed and never stopped upsets me.
@@TH-rj4ds First model I ever got ever, was an old metal atlas. :D
I'm personally a big fan of the Marauder, but I do prefer the Warhammer personally. :)
The Mad Cat is clan era. The videos are mostly focusing on the Inner Sphere during the Succession Wars. There will be clan videos... later. ;)
@@BigRed40TECH Sorry I guessed I missed that.
The Madcat(IS name) and Timber wolf(Clan name) are the same mech. This mech has been in MWO since 2014.
Orion. Why? Because it's the mech that brought the usurper to his knees. Cataphract is also a good one because it came from a place of desperation for heavy mechs. It's a bit of a frankenmech but I still love it.
General Kerensky I'm sure would be pleased with your loyalty. :D
Here because I wonder why we needed a class between medium and assault
I'm feeling the need to take that Ashigaru mech design and convert it into a 2-4 litter mates meant to support each other and using interchangeable parts.
I'll be honest while I do love the marauder. I'm always been a fan of the Orion and Warhammer.
I love so many mechs in Battletech. There is just so much to love :D
@@BigRed40TECH there's a few that afr kind of shit in the table top. Like the bandersnatch
While I prefer the Assault class over all others generally, I would be lying to say the Catapult isn't one of my top 3 favorites.
I'm big on assaults personally. Even with their drawbacks, I love that extra level of firepower. And Part 4 is coming, we will have an assault mech overview, probably by Wednesday.
@@BigRed40TECH Looking forward to it!
while medium mechs are the bread and butter, heavy mechs are the big guns , the wall of armor
For the Heavy Mechs, its "Go hard or go home"!
I love the Marauder
As allways: nice Video! What is that mech at 3:40 thou? Never seen that one
Modified Axman.
Main Battle Mechs, The Abrams of The Battletech Universe!
It's the MBT's!
Positive comment
Thank you, Rudy. I can always rely on you.
i like how oyu manage to list off pretty much all the heavy Unseen mechs. *makes a rude gesture at Harmony Gold*
Orion is great :D
Glaug officer pod = marauder
When speaking of the Archer you mentioned the "Bombard".... didyou mean the Bombardier?
Yes! I even have Bombardier written on the script and messed it up, lol
@@BigRed40TECH no worries...when the Bombardier mini came out we hadn't seen it in a TR yet, and the packages were all labeled as an "Archer" so we all thought it was a new Archer design... other than the low reload volume I always liked the Bombardier
Black Knight. Black Knight. Black Knight. Black Knight. Black Knight.
Love the mech, it's fantastic.
What is the closing image from? @7:15? Is that a game?
It's art using game assets. I suspect.
5:56 Where did that art come from? That looks really clean.
I found that on google tbh. I'm not sure where it's from.
@@BigRed40TECH Damn.
Thank you very much for the reply.
@@billrich9722 Yea, when I did the first couple videos it was google-fu for just about every image. Now I source all my stuff much more carefully, so sadly I just don't know where that one comes from :(

You're cruelty knows no bounds.
Mediums and heavies are basic bitch mechs!
Are you saying the only true Mechs are Lights and Assaults?
@@BigRed40TECH No, they are just the most popular for being in the golden middle of balance i think :) Lights like to fold from 1 shot and assaults barely move, making them "slightly" annoying to use. Locust and Atlas 4 life.
