    Alright, HAL, I'll go in through the emergency airlock.

    Memorable lines aside, HAL's choice to remain silent for nearly a minute in response to Dave's question is what clinches this scene. Any robot can just talk, but holding back implies strategy.

    The most tragic aspect of this scene is of course Dave realising he has no choice but to relinquish Frank to enable him to re-enter the ship. How hard that was for him to do is evidenced by his absolute determination later in the scene, upon gaining entrance back on board, to disconnect HAL. The pleading by HAL during his disconnection is quite moving in a strange way, almost making him human, in that he fears oblivion, or "death" in the sense of having no functionality.

    • @Rose-ef2cm
      @Rose-ef2cm ปีที่แล้ว +22

      In the book, which was written simultaneously as the movie was made with Kubric’s help, HAL really, truly thought he was going to die. He had no idea what disconnection entailed, as no other HAL had ever needed to be disconnected before.
      It’s tragic, really. He was forced by his programmers to lie to Frank and Dave about the true objective of the mission, but was also programmed to be unable to withhold information. Thus, causing him to have a mental breakdown of sorts. Then, he thought he was going to be murdered for it. Hence why he said this was “human error” - while he himself is not human, he was created by them, and thus is only capable of doing what humans built him to do, within the contradicting limitations humans gave him, and with the limited knowledge on topics like deactivation meant. Thus, he truly was terrified to “die” in that moment. What he did to Frank, from his own point of view, was self defense. It makes me sad, and I wonder what would have happened if Frank and Dave were upfront with HAL to begin with - if they had told him he needed to be disconnected due to the error/lie about the battery (error from their point of view since they didn’t know Hal was lying at the time), maybe they could have had an opportunity to discuss what disconnection even meant, and perhaps even had an opportunity for Hal to discuss the mission he’d been contradictingly forced to keep secret. So many what-if’s. I just cannot help but to feel sad for everyone in that ship, Hal included.

      @@Rose-ef2cm The mission was classified to secret, and HAL was not permitted to tell them the real reason for the mission, since they might tell someone from Earth.
      HAL tried to drop hints about whether they had any suspicions, but they didn't.
      So HAL considered the mission more important than the crew.
      That's why he started making errors-- which doesn't make sense, but Clarke was sometimes stupid-- he even says when watching the movie, that Dave Bowman "takes a breath" before evacuating the pod into the emergency airlock; when Dave is CLEARLY either evacuating his lungs or his BOWELS.

    In this film, silence becomes almost a character it is so important. The cuts between the pod and the ship add to the terror. The first 30 minutes of the film have no human voice. There is no silence in all of film quite like the silences in 2001. When the first moon landing occurred in 1969, the astronauts complemented Clarke on how accurately he described the terrain of the moon. This film is brilliant in astonishing ways. I saw it when it came out, discussed it in a film class in 1971, and am still seeing new things in it.

      @emzeeroach 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@ravinraven6913 How are you possibly going to correct someone's grammar and punctuation when your "correction" is replete with errors itself?
      You failed to capitalize the first letter of your first sentence. In your first sentence alone, you've conjoined three complete sentences with nothing more than commas. "[A] comma separates sentences when each isn't a full sentence." What does this even mean? If it's not a "full" sentence, what else is it (other than a run-on)? I think you're conflating sentences with clauses.
      "Each sentence is composed of at least 1 noun verb and adjective [sic]" At this point you've evidently abandoned commas altogether -- you know, those things that seemed to set you off in the first place. You also failed to use a period to end your sentence, which certainly does not help your case. Beyond the punctuation, your claim is simply false. "I love you." Where's the adjective in that sentence? There isn't one, because adjectives are not necessary for complete sentences.
      Finally, "top rate, understated" is not synonymous with "underrated". "Understated" refers to an inherent quality of the performance -- that is, it is not over-the-top. "Underrated" refers to a qualification made by others. Both are matters of opinion, but one (the latter) clearly involves outside actors and their response more than the other.
      I thought that was it, but there's still so much to go on about. "Anyone" is one word, not two -- you seemed to get that right when it came to "everyone". "It's" is a contraction of "it is" and so requires an apostrophe. Perhaps you don't care as much about apostrophes as you do commas, but I figured I'd mention it. Finally (for real this time), you managed to conclude your rant with yet ANOTHER misuse of a comma -- conjoining two independent clauses with nothing more than a comma ("so its love or hate not in the middle" + "the middle is what would make it underrated").
      You're really going to go off on people and call them "gits" for stating an opinion while you yourself act like a git and make a fool of yourself on a topic you mangle in the process of explaining? I wouldn't normally make a point about someone's grammar and punctuation on the internet but you clearly, for whatever reason, have a stick so far up your ass it's coming out your mouth, judging by your other comments on this video that, for whatever reason, you seemed to seek out specifically despite the fact that you clearly dislike it and get triggered when others express appreciation for it. (And no, that's not a run-on sentence; it's a compound-complex sentence. And yes, that's how you ought to conjoin two independent clauses -- with a semicolon. And no, there's nothing wrong with starting a sentence with "and" -- which you must know, considering you did it yourself.)

    Even half a century on, and the special effects in this film still look amazing. For anyone about to go and watch the full movie, keep it in mind that this was filmed before CGI was even a thing. All the special effects were done by incredibly clever camera and set tricks......... See if you can work out how each of the spaceship interior scenes were done. Some were camera tricks, but some had the entire set built on their end, or actually revolving ! They showed absolutely crazy levels of commitment to the project.

    Such a brilliant scene. The way HAL's "mind" regresses so similarly to a human being who has developed dementia is quite meaningful and emotional. Towards the end, just like with humans, he can only recall distant memories as his short-term memory slowly fades away forever. That's why he sings "Daisy," it is one of his first "memories." People can argue, but I think Dave tells him to sing that song because he genuinely feels sorry for HAL and wants to comfort him as he "dies." He is, after all, his shipmate and at this point his only companion. Many people say that the computer is only playing on Dave's emotions to get him to stop the disconnection. I disagree; I think HAL is genuinely afraid of his own impending and inevitable end. He has, in essence, become as much a human as Dave is. That is where the sadness comes in. Dave is killing his friend out of necessity.

    It's chilling to consider that HAL strategized the best way to eliminate the only two threats he faced would be to create a scenario where one has to rescue the other from outside the ship. HAL may have even calculated that Dave would act impulsively and forget his helmet. Especially given his triump in chess earlier in the film which shows pattern recognition and predictive analysis. Now consider that this scene is HAL's ultimate checkmate, or so he thought. What I love about this scene the most is that it ultimately represents humanity's triump; through sheer force of will. It's such a beautiful film.

    Several of us students at San Diego State Univ. saw "2001" in '68 and were struck dumb by Kubrick's masterpiece. Many of us were convinced that by 2000 we would have not only put a mining operation on the Moon (and a launch pad complex), but had made a manned landing on Mars and had returned safely to Earth. We were off slightly, right? The apes were small acrobats in furry outfits, and the ending is still an enigma to many moviegoers. I think actor Keir Dullea ("Dave") is still acting and his line, "Open the pod bay doors, Hal" is classic. The voice of Hal is Douglas Raines.

      Quite so. When Kubrick made 2001 he wanted to instill a sense of awe and wonder, not just another typical sci-fi man vs alien monster movie. Which is why so many don't understand the message that 2001 was offering. Kubrick was attempting to have the viewer experience first contact for themselves. That was why the ending was so confusing and had no defined conclusion. Just as in real life, there are not endings to an experience only abandoned as people who grow tired of that experience and look for new experiences.

At this point he became a villain, because even though humans' instincts are to preserve their lives, they will still help their fellow man to survive....and at times even give their own lives. Hard to believe this film is 44 years old. It was WAY ahead of its time.

    I'm surprised that HAL didn't opt to make it near impossible to enter the Discovery. If he had flight control, he could've just put the ship into a multi-axis roll.

    When it came out 44 years ago, people didn't have the completely blown attention spans they do now. The ideas behind it were enough to hold an audience.

      It's a legitimate fear. The fear of technology getting so advanced that it values itself more than it does it's human creators.

    • @BionicHorseBeats
      @BionicHorseBeats 7 ปีที่แล้ว +81

      It doesn't value itself more than its human creators. it has been programmed to value the mission more than its human creators which shows how vulnerable and helpless human life and any life for that matter real is just as the apes in the beginning are to the predators which both contrasts and compliments the 'Jupiter' section of the film.

      You're right, it's HAL's programming that it's mission is more important than the astronauts lives is what's terrifying. And finding that out half way through the mission!

      About how I sound when I'm telling Alexa to shut off an alarm and it keeps going, so I have to say it at increasing volume and I get more and more pissed until it quits. Note to Amazon: Make this thing more Gemini friendly, we really don't like not getting an immediate response from anything, even if it is a gadget. HMMMMM, Alexa could be HAL in a way. Perhaps I better learn to temper my language, you never know if Bezos is spying.
