      1000%, man if our Color Green and Coloring Book were released as 1 LP, it would've been Glassjaw's best album by far and one of the greatest punk albums of all time - they had the 5 songs from OCG and 6 for CB, both EPs were released WITHIN A MONTH of each other, it's always saddened me that they weren't combined into 1 LP - you can't even use the argument that because they'd been playing a few of the OCG songs live for 1-2 years, it wasn't new material but none aside from Lennon (released a year before) had been given studio recordings before the few-month lead up to the EP so on the studio/album level they were brand new at the time and New White Extremity, the studio recording of this album's opening track was released 2 years ago! I feel like we've lost an LP, and the two EPs exist as like a phantom album - 2009-2011 Glassjaw is the best Glassjaw have ever been - the songs, the Helvetica lyric covers, I just wished they'd released it as 1 album

      One of the coolest things about coloring book I think is the way they layer rhythms. Drums and guitar will be playing different measure lengths at parts of that album and it makes for a hypnotic vibe rarely heard in rock. They tried to do that again at parts of material control, but to me it sounded like second rate coloring book when they did:/. First album they ever did that was a little of a letdown for me. Still one of my all time favorite bands.

    Glassjaw has existed since 1993. Darryl's vocal style is 100 percent his own.

  • @purrpocalypse
    @purrpocalypse 7 ปีที่แล้ว +220

    Melonhead you keep criticizing the vocal style, but that vocal style is one of the top reasons the fans have stuck around so long. It clicks real strong for a lot of us.

      Klisk Darryl's vocals are so one of a kind. This shit is amazing. Even with no screaming. Funny thing is the bands that he mentioned his vocal style comes from, he's been around longer; and i think he probably influenced Chino and Cedric. Definitely for the longtime fans, though. Perfect ending for my year.

      Yeah this album is at the very least an 8. Possibly 9. I'm not even mad at Melon, I get why he doesn't get it, I just wish he knew more about the band and their heritage before jumping into the review. I feel like he got several details, and maybe even timelines, wrong.

      Klisk I have to agree, his vocals I can't take serious like how Anthony described it but songs like "Ape dos Mil" and "Trailer Park Jesus" sound good, especially the rhythm guitar on the chorus of Trailer Park Jesus

      100% agree, I think Anthony needs to just sit and listen to them much more then he has. I really think he's missing a lot, I think Glassjaw themselves require a TON of listening time to really get what they're laying down. It's very hard to get through their extremely dense sound to really get what they're putting down. Literally took me years.

    • @dreaminginnoother
      @dreaminginnoother 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      totally. When I first heard them in 2000, I was like wtf is wrong with this guy. And pretty quickly they turned into one of my all time favorite bands. I don't know how he can say they were compositionally lacking. At that time there was nothing anything like them.

      Coloring Book is my favorite Glassjaw project. But, the latter half of the EP has a tendency to drag.
      Glassjaw has been my favorite band since I was 12 years old. For 17 years I’ve eaten up everything this outfit has put out.
      However, I can freely admit that I was let down by this album.
      And it’s all due to the drum work.
      There are so many inspired designs and “neat” ideas on this project. There are so many places that this album pushes what made Glassjaw, glassjaw; But, goddamn - what an avoidable misstep.
      Bringing Billy Rymer in to fill in tDurijah Lang’s massive shoes was a great idea. Having Billy track drum passages Beck wrote 10 years ago was not.
      It’s a huge disappointment that while everything else functions so so smoothly on this album, one of the defining roles does not.
      With all that being said, I still enjoy this album. The guitar work transcends, the lyrical content is lush, the bass is as mean as a middle school bully and I love the instrumentals.
      6/10. Replace Billy with D and you’d have a fucking 10/10.

    Although not an official album, glassjaw did release two EP's in 2010/2011 (Our Color Green/Coloring Book) so it hasn't been total silence for over 15 years. Coloring Book in particular is a fascinating EP with it's very latin inspired grooves throughout the album that I do hope GJ explores down the road. Regardless, it seems your acknowledgement of being indifferent to those first two records does seem to correlate to your feelings on this album. As a diehard for this band, it was just nice to see them pummeling again in classic fashion. Even if it is a familiar sound it is so authentically glassjaw: it's that raw, frantic and over the top nature (especially the vocals) that makes their music such an fun and thrilling emotional rollercoaster to sink into.

      I feel like Mr. Fantano is unaware of the coloring book ep, which I could forgive him for. Most ppl were. Though I did catch glassjaw on the tour they did with it, with two sets, then 2nd being for the entire coloring book ep. I remember everyone in the crowd being bored with the 2nd set, but I freaking loved it. And they handed out physical copies of the ep for free after the show

    Palumbos vocal style is super unique and I love that he sings melodies on top of melodies, its so good. I still think its the heaviest band out there, first time I heard Worship and Tribute I was blown away by the heaviness of it, it crushed everything. Big glassjaw fan. I really loved worship and tribute album and thier EPs are killers with bangers. When fantano says that compositionally they are decent. It's pretty cringy to me. I think Darryl and Justin writing is amazing. Darryl voice is way better than all these new singers out hear who sound like there balls haven't drop yet. And Justin writing on guitar is just flat out amazing. Songs like you think your fucking John Lenon is beefy and heavy; trailer park Jesus, ape dos mill, Midwestern stylings, and Jesus glue have really good melodies especially songs like trailer park Jesus and Midwestern stylings which are my top favorites Glassjaw songs.

    Been watching your reviews lately man gotta say I love the content.
    A suggestion for a future video:
    I think for a person like yourself who really understands music and the message behind it, a recent album I would love to see you review is: The Used:The Canyon.
    The Used are currently headlining with Glass Jaw at the moment, so I think it would be pretty great to see a review of their album.
    Personally, I think its one of the best pieces of work The Used have ever created.
    17 tracks, recorded completely on tape... so it's also a rare find now days!

    Although I have some disagreements on vocals (I enjoy them perhaps for the sole factor of them reminding me of Deftones) I definitely agree with everything else. Guitar work is as dizzying and dissonant as ever and overall I think the band did an awesome job bringing something new to the table. Rockin' review my dude.

      I did not want a redo of their old stuff, I love how they evolve, but I still was a little underwhelmed by material control. It has parts that are great for sure, but some of it does feel like filler, or a little lacking in direction at times. Most of their music has gotten better with time for me though. I hope this album will grow on me. Just saw them live for the 3rd time and it was fantastic. I trust them as cutting edge post hardcore creators.

    This album was perfect for me. When I first heard it I was pissed it was so short. But... after like 100 more listens, it's just right. It's like a bit longer EP and it kind of mixes up what they've done throughout the years with some new styles, it's def. original IMO. It borrows a bit from FNM and Deftones sure.

    I did not listen to Glassjaw at all growing up, but a few tracks on this album are pretty incredible. New White Extremity and Shira, which are not actually new, make me lose my shit a little. The soaring bass and choruses in these tracks have me head banging like a maniac while I'm sitting in traffic. Keep doing that, and I'll finally be a huge fan.

    I usually like Anthony's opinion, but I couldn't disagree more with his analysis of early gj. They have always been on the cutting edge in their own unique way and very honest to their own tastes. Definitely one of my favorite bands, despite thinking daryl was a weirdo spaz the first time I heard them. The 2 eps he didn't acknowledge were also fantastic and different. I will however say, this was the first thing they ever did that underwhelmed me. Some of it is wonderful, but about half of it is not great imo. I do appreciate the progression into their own weird thing, but I would like to hear something more developed from them.
