- Bass by Kayak follows Beau and a band of merry men across Australia's Bass Strait in a Sea Kayak. In Episode 4, the party of five finally leave Deal Island and make the long, tide-swept crossing to Flinders island. Slow, drugged up, and overly optimistic about completing the crossing in daylight, they eventually arrive at Kilicrankie Bay. Tassie, all of a sudden, looms.

I love how everyone is having an awful time on the crossing and Beau is just having a wonderful experience
this was beautiful on a whole new level. a masterpiece, like you said.
Amazing series. Aside from the heavenly scenery and paddling, it is great to see some of the planning and prep before hand as well as the way every one interacts and deals with situations that arise. Perfectly edited into viewable chunks. Thanks for taking the time to film and edit your journey First class mate!!!
Not sure if I said thanks for the note, Mad Reggie. If you're from Mad River in VT, then goodonya even more. Geeze I like that place (VT, route 100, your river). Go well fella
At about 4:33 when Beau talks about "paddling in a Masterpiece", I think about a Will Smith quote that talks about right on the other side of the highest point of fear or pain or discomfort that you can achieve, is this immense feeling of peace and happiness. The metaphor is made best with skydiving. You're so afraid all day and when you jump its bliss. This is another example of that. At the crews most difficult and tiring point, the sea calms and a rainbows shows and at a point of maximum fatigue and discomfort, a feeling of sublime that can only be achieved by doing these crazy adventures. Beautiful story Beau.
yaaaaa, its rewind time
'Paddling within a Masterpiece'
So good.
Very good
I kept saving this series… it was it worth it. I’m already planning a trip because this video has gotten me craving something nice with a quality friend or two.
Good to see a glimpse of the secret weapon-a Yorkshire tea bag! Never under estimate the restorative powers of a brew. Super videos & what a trip. Thank you.
"I felt as if I was paddling within a masterpiece, a Turner seascape. That is the privilege of the sea kayaker" - Beau Miles, 2017
This series is fantastic, good expedition. Good editing, I commend all of you. Thank you.
Not sure why anyone would give the thumbs down on this epic and beautiful adventure. If I had 10 fingers I would give all of them the thumbs up.
Thanx for the vids! Love watching! I'm planning for 2 months of kayaking from Bergen to Nordkapp in Norway this summer. I dont know if i will make it all the way, but it will be an adventure anyways. Stay safe!
Good one Jim. Heck of a journey you've got on the burner there. Some very ugly coastline and horrible beer to be trialled along the way.
@@BeauMiles and expensive!! The beer!!!
Did you do it, Jim?!
What a magnificent group of humans.
06:21 Yorkshire Tea :) Good lads. That was awesome. Cheers.
Super cool and inspiring, thanks for sharing all these amazing adventures.
Thanks Sage, good on you for watching and sending through a note. Best
Beau, from 3.55 to 5.30 is pure art!!!
Thanks, Thomas. Yes indeed...I pained on this section for longer than any other piece of the series- and in fact any piece of story-telling I've ever put to film. It was important to portray the magic out there, and it was. Go well!
@@BeauMiles You too mate!!!!!
@@BeauMiles Hi Beau, I just posted a link to Bass by Kayak in a Danish and a German kayak group on FB. Just to recommend your film to fellow paddlers. I hope it is all right with you!!!
@@thomasjensen3214 Fantastic, Thomas. The more sharing the better. It reminds me also that I should put subtitles in the films for internationals- although I suspect you speak a wider form of English that myself! Good man.
@@BeauMilesIs it possible to read your PHD somewhere???
Lockdown doldrums and 'unassisted sea kayak crossing' seemed like a good bet to take my mind somewhere else but I didn't expect anything as good as this! Thanks
For some reason, the way this is edited and narrated, its very enjoyable to watch!
Been enjoying all of your documentaries mate you're a man I look up to and draw inspiration from.
Loved sharing the journey with you guys. Awesome!
6:20 YORKSHIRE TEA. love to see it :D
I think you deserve a lot more attention. This series is wonderfull. I really enjoy it! You guys are a great motivation and aw inspiring. Thank you guys!
This series are just amaazing!
3:50 that view! 🌈
4.25 Life at its best, middle of one of the most dangerous bodies of water in the world, having a good time. Awesome.
I reckon, Charlie. A peak moment of my paddling life. Livin it.
Peas are also my favourite food group.
Jeeze, what a fantastic adventure for these young gentlemen!
Amazing

Fantastic filming guys. Makes me want take the gear out and go on the ocean. Well done. I found it inspiring so thanks for sharing.
"20 & some change means 30" 🤣🤣
superb, thanks for the upload
what a great series of vids so far!
Inspiring -thank you
Awesome job guy's
Amazing! Well done lads
Really well made and enjoyable films mate. I've been thinking about getting into sea kayaking and this series of videos has convinced me. I'm based in the UK in Liverpool so plenty of water to go at, questionable weather though.
Excellent.Indeed, good water over there, fella. Lots nooks and crannies and history along the way. Have always fancied a lap of the UK
Well we'll see how I get on their could be an invite come your way one day. A friend recently did a lap around Ireland and the photos were enough to convince me that this is a hobby worth taking up. Keep up the good work.
Brilliant😀
Amazing, some achievement!
Legend!
Love it!
Yep love it
So epic
I want to see more
I' M a beginner..... this is a dream for me .
Thx

Dramamine is the only thing you will ever need for sea sickness I highly recommend it
I love watching this video. I’ve probably watched it several times now. I’d love to do something like this myself one day. Those sunsets and rainbows on the water are gorgeous. Did you use GoPros on the Kayaks mostly?
9:31 so you’d say that silence was comfy, without having to try?
If anyone gets that reference I will be astonished
If a storm comes up, last place I'd want to be is a shed full of tools. ;)
Jesus, I’d love to do a trip like this.
Then do it. Not trying to be an ass but that's the whole spirit of these trips. Want to do one? Do it! Buy a kayak, find some friends and get on the water
Awesome. Did you see much in the way of sea life out there?
G'day. M L. Not as much as other trips- but enough to break the blue horizon; dolphins, gulls, jumping fish, seals and penguins- no whales or albatross this time.
Last time I was glued to the screen like this was watching Breaking Bad. This is awesome guys but knock the fish out before preparing it next time please. Just respect for life.
Cheers, No Bull. Yep, that shot was the act of (actually) killing it, almost immediately after landing (knife through brain). Lots of respect going on there, mate. Best.
7:18 🤣
Great adventure. I thought I was the only one on earth who knew ibuprofen was good for taking the edge off of sea sickness :-)
Beau, I really enjoyed these four vids. Where is Number 5?
G'day Kurt. Number 5 is off with the south editor and will be online next week sometime...Good man for watching, and stay tuned.
Super vid. Have you tried using sails or is that cheating?
Love sails. We used them for hours on the trip. Not a lot of extra K gained by them, as nearly always a gentle to moderate headwind, but I love em. Best
Love watching the cinematography and your crews interactions. What where you using for the arial shots?
Hi Kipp,
The Phantom 3 did the job. Mitch, the co-producer is a pretty handy pilot now after a few months of training (always a little dicey over sea!). Sometimes hard to stuff up a shot in magic scenery- as are the islands of Bass.
very nice video. hope you could merge them all into one video after the last installment?
Hi Stan,
Maybe, although it's very much made as a series. As in, with a start and finish for each episode. Ep. 5 not far off hitting the stands. Best
Great! Or maybe just a playlist will do :)
damn so you guys just go for straight 16 hours? or do you stop every now n then? and the stops are in the ocean or on land?
This channel is absolutely class! Well done lads. Beau, I look forward to your next challenge. Like and subscribe ya bloody wombats🤪
Never saw a kayak with a sail on the bow before..
Gewglesux they look like Flat Earth sails, brilliant bits of kit.
@@tommfuller It looks like it! I dont see many here in the NE..
GREAT VIDEO, What camera do you use?
G'day H. Lots of cameras of different kind, although mainly the Panasonic GH4, Sony Rx100 and a bunch of go-pros. Ta for the note H. Good one
Awesome thanks Love the doco editing aswell!
What was the software you used to get high fidelity oceanic charts and draw a line on them like that?
In case they don't answer, Blender could do something like this fairly easily
64 km = 34.5 n.m. Took 16 hours averaging 2.2 knots. That's very slow, must have had an adverse current!
is that the way to padle?
I'm curious, would it help to connect the kayaks to paddle together and reduce friction? A bit Like cyclists do.
Can anyone tell me the name of the song in the outro?
Any encounters with big whites ????
Matt reminds me of mike Nolan
Great stuff Beau. Long crossing done, looking forward to the next installment! Pete S

You could have made each episode an hour and I would have enjoyed every second of it.
